I went to Hakata Dontaku, which is the annual holiday of the Golden Week holidays.
Please enjoy the parade on May 4th.
"Hakata Dontaku" is said to have originated from an event called "Matsubayashi" that started in 1179 at the end of the Heian period.
It's been going on for over 840 years. In the Meiji era, it came to be called "Hakata Dontaku". "Dontaku" is said to be derived from the Dutch word Zondag (meaning holiday).
Every year on May 3rd and 4th, men and women of all ages slap their clothes in their own costumes and parade through the city, performing dances on the stage and open space created in the city, and the whole town is rejuvenated. With a total of about 650 participating dontaku corps, about 33,000 participants, and about 2 million spectators, it is said to be the best festival in Japan during Golden Week in the spring.
