I’ve got a lot of respect for Olajuwon’s work ethic. I don’t think he had great basketball skills when he arrived in the NBA, but he was seven feet tall (in the program anyway; some say he was really about 6’10’) and an unbelievable athlete so he could have just coasted to a good career, but he put the work in to improve. If he hadn’t I doubt the Rockets would have won two championships when Hakeem was in his thirties.

He didnt touch a basketball until he was fifteen, so for him to be an all time great at SO many things, including playing in an era where the center position was THE position, is downright incredible. @@timothymiller1783 Lol that is crazy! Maybe thats a reasonhe had such good feet and hands in basketball. I honestly think he may be the greatest athlete ever, because almost NOBODY picks up a sport that late and is that good. And keep in mind this, he was NASTY when I was a kid, with Ralph Sampson in the mid 80s, not just the early to mid 90s when most today remember him. That means he was almost an MVP candidate after only picking up a basketball for SEVEN YEARS! THATS a prodigy my brother!

Loved his game. I’m 68 now. 6’4” 220. But I emulated his offense style so much. Of course I’m smaller with nowhere near his ability. But much of my style was directly from his footwork and movement. I incorporated it although I was basically a small forward. I had a few people tell me they saw his style of play was influential in mine even. Please I’m not comparing myself at all. Just that I tried his style for my smaller self.

Olajuwon in 1993/1994 year lead his team in playoff pts + reb + ast + blk + stl en route to a title with no other hall of famers on his team. I don't know of any shooting guard in the 90s central division that could pull that off.

@@olzt100 I guess the rockets weren’t a team either. All the anti MJ fans up play what Dream did those 2 years, but downplay what MJ did those 6 years. All the Rocket players contributed just like the Bulls players. These role players on BOTH teams would be less effective without the main star; which were Hakeem and MJ. I hope you’re a Dream fan pumping up one of the greatest centers ever, not a Bron fan looking for anyone to bruise MJs legacy. As a lakers Magic Johnson fan, at least I can be more honest and able to say I witnessed all of these players live. I can say I’ve never seen a player other than LeBron take breaks while in the game, and that was in his younger years. I’ve seen Magic live many times and was impressed and awed every time. Not so with Bron. I left the game unimpressed and disappointed

@@teamcaveman If you notice, the NBA crowd is the only team sports segment that identifies one player as the reason for team titles. Why? Sports endorsements from shoes to insurance. Now find a boxer, Golfer or tennis player, true individual sports competitors, that flood the market with products. It's all hype for product pushing. And unfortunately, people gullibly fall for it. Ever see Shaq hawk The General Iinsurance? Ever see Chris Paul hawk State Farm insurance? All the players rep something on the court, Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, etc. Now why doesn't Chamberlain, Jabbar, Julius Erving, Hakeem Olajawon or Larry Bird get similar hype and are uplifted in the conversations of NBA greatness? Because they are not currently in huge contracts with these companies. And these companies by ad time from CBS Sport, ESPN, Fox Sports etc. It's all player hype to bleed over to the products they promote and sell. Curry, James, Jordan, Shaq and some others are currently linked with mega deals. So they are the folks contiually highlighted as the greatest ever or top 10 etc. It's all about name recognition to sell products.
