there is a beautiful hadith of prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم talking about this topic Qurra ibn Iyas reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, I would have slaughtered a sheep but I had mercy on it.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you had mercy on the sheep, then Allah will have mercy on you twice. brother and sister please share it .

Very good, I believe in that. I am vegetarian, and believe that to be the right path to go....love God's creation, his animals and their right to life and to raise their own families too.

Very good discussion. This has been a huge concern of mine for some years now. Zabiha halal labeling on meat products while the animals lived a life of torture and an inhumane death. Why is it "zabiha" if the entire process, from the animals birth to death isn't humane? Why "zabiha" if the animals are tortured yet Bismaillah Allaahu Akbar is uttered at the slaughter? May Allaah forgive me but I had to make a conscious decision for myself and family; to support local farmers who actually raise their animals with love or manufacturers of halal which actually isn't halal (in my opinion). The slaughter isn't zabiha but the animals life is rich, wholesome and the food is halal for me to eat. Halal meaning allowed or permissible just not zabiha halaal. JAK

It should be possible to do halal slaughter of animals on those local caring farms, and rather than certify centrally, just let your friends and mosque community know it is done right. Centralised certification of organic has also degraded as large mainly profit driven bodies increase their participation in that market. If we are talking about being sustainable and wholesome, slow and local and involved is the way to go. That way, just as brother Geoff Lawton emphasises with Permaculture, the "soil" improves as we continue to harvest a yield from it. I have no problem with using science, the main danger is the scientistic centralising mindset that often comes along. I can't feel too bad about the methane my composting food waste generates. I agree with the sister here after all, taking one principle to its logical extreme independent of context could be detrimental extremism.

Wouldn’t it be best to raise an animal properly and *also* slaughter it in the zabiha way, rather than either/or?
@ONSLAWTT

@@MotorStorm66 Absolutely... The local farmer here allows us to come slaughter the animal ourself, hamdulillah.

Very important topic indeed....Food certification is also a huge issue that needs to be addressed - especially in non-muslim countries with big muslim populations. I travel quite frequently and sometimes its a struggle to know if a particular food product / restaurant is halal or not. In India for example most restaurants do not display if the food they serve is halal, but if asked they would say they bought the meat from a muslim source. There is no way to be sure if he is saying that to get business or is actually telling the truth. Certification can certainly solve this problem, God knows best.

I think the video's title should be changed in order for non-muslim people, who are interested in this topic, to be able to find it on KZfaq and discover this fundamental ethical dimension in islamic civilization...

Please post the slides that she was using during the presentation. It'll be better if we too could see what she was displaying during her presentation. You can also make it in a format that's similar to the Cambridge Muslim College's conferences of Science & Religion - ‘were we can see both the one presenting and the display of what he/she presents.’
