Pressure chamber will get rid of bubbles 8n epoxy, also mixing slowly will. I built a pressure chamber out of an old pressure cooker.

Hey so just a suggestion, instead of trying to repair the bubbles, why no go and make coloured epoxy and fill it with that? It may look cool! However, if you don’t want bubbles I’d say a vacuum chamber and very slow setting resin would help and also be sure to pour the resin on the side so the bubbles have less distance to get to the top!

as messed up as it sounds, a hitachi magic wand vibrator is the best thing for getting air bubbles out of epoxy

this looks like a mass produced cast axe head before annealing , the residue metal around the edges shows me that this was cast in a two part sand box, i used to work in a foundry where sand box moulds were commonly used so i recognise the look.

To fight with air bubbles, make a vacuum chamber, its easy and cheap.

this is the answer, but when you do bubbles will well out the top of the item, along with a bunch of the epoxy so make a reservoir of extra at the "top" of the item.

Also, slowly pour epoxy with a very thin stream from a large height. Compares to thick stream and small height at 09:02, The small diameter of the stream will force air bubbles out. You already know vibration and heat, aforementioned vacuum and figure 8-stiring are the remaining tricks i kmow.

Wish I knew what the stuff in the spray can the Russian channels (the positive couple) use for bubble removal. They just spray that crap on and bubble go away.

I loved this video as well as all the other ones on this channel. I love how there is no generic music that we have to listen to like some of the other D.I.Y. channels. I love how it is just you and the sounds of work, and then I love the transformation of everything. I also loved every time you introduce a new product used and how you slowly bring it into the camera frame. I am so captivated by every one of your videos. I also find it interesting how you sandblast everything and put gold leaf on anything you can. All in all, you have a great channel, and I thoroughly enjoy watching all your videos. Halberds typically had long spearlike handles, hence the pointy tip above the blade. The handle you made looks sick though.

Restoration implies a return to the original form. That is the whole point. He simply removed the original irregularities, which showed how the metal was cast and ground the surface completely senseless. This weapon NEVER looked like this. The shape of the hilt and gilding are completely off topic. HERE EVERYTHING IS NOT AS MUST BE. This exhibit is lost for the museum. And for a person who calls himself a restorer, this is a collection of mistakes

I agree with @KP9IK about his "restoration" this is a blatent disrespect of what a halberd is. It is a POLEARM not a handaxe. Not to mention the wretched use of a fireaxe handle like wtf! Dude your a restoratitor, restore it to a halberd. If anything you should of made a less flashy woodend pole and it would look a million times better not this epoxy gold leaf disrespect. This is why i watch other restoritors. If you want a TRUE weapon restpration i reconnend "Restoration And Metal" who actually care about restoring the weapon not ruining it.

I may be wrong, but think viewers who don;t restore things themselves sometimes miss a very big point when watching videos. Restoring is a LOT of fun to those who get into it. Its more about the journey and how to make the individual bits the best they can be, plus the journey of how to get that done. What I enjoyed about this video the most was the techniques employed. I learn a lot from these videos (as I think we all do). As to the final product, it definitely does not have a "classic" look to it, but it would be very fun to have done this project. And you sure get a good cucumber slicer out of it!

A little better sharpening and you'd get a colorful meat cleaver Looks perfect for separating beef ribs. Very hard to bend or chip that blade. And of course you could always pick on a lot of people's favorite targets for mayhem, those giant cucumbers, the ones with the red centers. Good drama for picnics. Watermelon halves a la Saxon. One chop magic.

9:50 - use vacuum chamber for epoxy to get rid of the most bubbles.

If you pour in layers instead of all at once you can avoid air bubbles. You can also use your heat gun to heat the side of your mold and pop the bubbles as they rise to the top. Sometimes, depending on the brand, pouring large amounts of resin creates to much heat in a small mold and it creates bubbles. If I make a really large item I have to pour in layers to avoid lots of bubbles. A vacuum chamber is definitely the best option though!

C'mon dude live and let live,,, there wasnt that much handle when he got it and the effort it would require to remake a longer handle isn't worth it, it just makes a lot more sense to make it a decorative piece. While I understand why a lot of people are upset with the historical inaccuracies with this video, I think it should be said that not all restoration is for the purpose of historical accuracy. Sometimes it's taking something old and making it your own creation. In this case, the original parts that he started with was an obvious casted replica. He is using his own tools and money to make for himself; he isn't hurting an original piece with heavy significance, or scamming someone else, or going against a clients wishes. Dude made a cool thing for himself based on his own preferences and wanted to share his techniques, thoughts, and struggles.

The smallest helberds are over 2 meters tall. Don't get me wrong what you made is awesome but as soon as I saw that axe handle I was going "what the hell?" Again still better work then anything I can do , but I wouldn't call what you made a halberd.

I know I'm way late to comment but most resins are not meant for "deep" pours like this, it generates too much heat and causes those bubbles to get trapped. You need either a deep pour resin for like tables or countertops or a cool set resin which will take much longer to cure but does not generate as much heat.

I enjoy your vids very much, but on this one I definitely did not like the handle or the gold leaf. A Halberd rests on a long pole (2 meters) and is used as a battle axe.

There are kinds of epoxy made especially for deep-pours. They are usually labelled as low-viscosity, slow cure resins. They are more liquid than normal resin and take a long time to cure (12-24 hrs) but because they're thin, the bubbles have time to rise up. Also tapping and vibrations help a lot, or pulling a vacuum. Love your videos man, keep up the good work.

I usually dislike restoration videos without some form of narration/ voiceover but you and MyMechanic are two very good exceptions to that rule. Large epoxy projects like this should cure in a vacuum chamber to pull out all the air, hence no bubbles. Nice work there 👏

You should watch Peter Browns videos for epoxy help. He makes all sorts of stuff with it. Even an axe handle. Might give you good insights on preventing those bubbles.

Those lines along the edge makes it look cast instead of forged, which would make the piece not suitable for combat..

Ok you asked... The amount of air added by the stirring is based on the area and turbulence of the stir. So a very small shaft w/a small 'fan' below the surface works well. Just insert it slowly. For bigger gaps in the mold, vibration can help. Usually for bubbles a low frequency works better; say 100hz or below. Thanks for posting, I liked the handle mold a lot.

For getting rid of bubbles: Get a large tub allowing the object to be oriented properly for the resin fill. Prop up or suspend the object. Cap the tub with a lid, secured tightly. The lid needs a 3/8" brass ball valve integrated into it. Connect the ball valve to a pneumatic hose and vacuum pump (check your local hardware/refrigerant supply house, they should have one available; shop around for good prices). You now have a custom sized vacuum chamber.

Define "vintage"...as it looks like those are "fuss" from a casting. Edit: I call bullshit. That is a casted replica of a Halberd left out to rust. The halberd was NOT a cast iron item, no matter how "vintage".

Actually halberds were quite practical in that time, the axe head was for cleaving, the spear head was for stabbing, and the spike on the back was for armor puncturing

I enjoy this kind of videos. And then sometimes i just think: what the hell are you doing, dude? The epoxy handle is looking awful... it's not just the wrong material, the shape doesn't fit to this kind of axe. I like the idea with the golden elements with the polished metal.

I didn’t see the first video, but did anyone notice that the axe head was cast not forged as it would have been if it was a real medieval halberd head. That said I guess you would not do what he has done to an original one.

That's how gold leaf is applied. There is no other way too do it. You collect the dust from it afterwards and save it for re-melting, but it's only pennies of gold. And they have modern stuff that looks like gold but isn't.

If you put it in a pressure pot, after stirring it, and as it's setting it gets rid of all of the bubbles! also, if you have a three to one ratio resin it causes less bubbles than a one-to-one ratio. It sets much slower but has less stirring involved ergo, less bubbles! Also, if you sand and polish the resin it turns less cloudy and will be absolutely gorgeous! I recommend watching Bens workx videos, he doesn't incredible stuff with wood and resin! Maybe you can get some ideas! I love this ax! It turned out beautiful!
