Put bricks inside for the plants to rest upon so they just emerge from the water, and put in an angled tree branch so small animals can get out. You could also add a tray on top of the submerged bricks for a bird bath while avoiding the plants.

Little idea: Take the staples out of the gun, spray paint the back of the staples black. Reload the gun and you now have black staples. 👍

to make the pond liner soft use a hair dryer or electric paint stripper, makes it easier to fold the liner.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the whiskey barrel pond, I’ve recently acquired one and filled it with aquatic plants and put 2 goldfish and a shubunkin in it. I hadn’t lined it as it held water ok but never thought about the whiskey possibly leaching through the oak, they seem to be fine after a week though they are still shy and in hiding! I’m amazed how already it’s attracted insects I haven’t seen before especially the large red damselflies 👍

Hi, I like your idea of lining the inside of the barrel. When I made my pond I didn't use that, I just made water changes every 4-5 days until the water was clear and clean smelling (it took a couple months). A few months later, the water started getting darker I guess from the tanins. It seems better to line the barrel. Saves you a lot of trouble

I have two of these. One is a plastic faux barrel the other is a wine barrel that I bought a liner for. The frustrating part is they are in general, too deep. The plants are often marginal and don't enjoy being more than 10 or so centimetres below the water line. I found myself messing around with 'platforms' etc to raise the level of the plants. They were always falling over etc. So now I have floating pots instead. Thanks for sharing.

Hi mate, I’m in the process of doing a 1/2 barrel pond….. I’ve also made a mesh cover to protect the fish. By the way, you’ll need to bring the fish indoors from mid September, through to March. I’ve got a spare fish tank I intend to use 👍🏼

Chlorine only takes a few hours to dissipate, not weeks. Every garden needs some sort of water feature, no matter how small. I like the glued stone effect, I would not have thought of that.

Nice job 👍 Just so you're aware, goldfish can get to about a foot long, so it may be worth moving them into a larger pond and putting in maybe some white cloud mountain minnows or similar cool water fish, best of luck 👍

A couple inch’s of pea gravel for the fish to feed on invertebrates at bottom with bricks on top under plant post. Only use aquatic plant soil or the water will turn green with any other soil.

Like to know how your barrel is coping re shrinkage and returning back to original size. By lining my barrel it allowed mine to shrink and eventually loosen from the metal rings which then fell to the ground. The barrel eventually fell apart leaving the liner full of plants etc. Unlined new barrel … and the water alone keeps the barrel sealed and correct plants keep water both cool and free from stagnating. Hope you’re having better luck than my first barrel. As an aside the whiskey/funky smell disappeared after a couple of days with plants in, though fish were not living in mine only plants for wildlife.

A floating solar fountain may look a good idea.............and it is............until the sun shines, the floating solar fountain will go to the edge and as the sun is shining bright the jet will be high, and the water will get pumped over the edge draining the pool.

Thank you for sharing your process in creating a barrel pond. What did you end up doing to winterize it?
@davidianoliver
@davidianoliver 2 ай бұрын
You need to make sure any ice that forms doesn’t get too thick. Where I live it rarely gets cold enough for long enough to cause a problem. I occasionally have to break the ice in winter and once or twice I’ve put an insulating blanket over the pond at night as a precaution
