If you are subscribed you know I have been studying half guard quite a bit recently, specifically the development of our leg attacks out of the half guard position. Once we develop strong leg attacks our opens will respect them, and when they do they open up opportunities for us to attack their upper body. I believe the perfect way to do this is to start with a Kimura. It gives us sweep options and submission option. If the kimora fails, we can also wrestle up or go right back into the legs.
This strategy was used a lot by Gordon Ryan and during the most recent fight to win. I believe as the new era of athletes understand and respect the leg game more and more, Kimuras are going to develop as a great way to attack.
On the flip side, as the guard passer it is important to understand how to stay safe and prevent the Kimura entry. The easiest way to do this is to always have your palm facing the ceiling. This makes the kimura entry much less likely. So as you reach to pass the guard, make sure your palm faces the ceiling
