crazy how in some shots it took me a second to tell whether it was rtx on or off. really a testament to how well valve designed the visuals and lighting of the original game

Valve really showed what they’re capable of back in 2004. Games from that time *look* like they’re 19 years old. The Source engine is aging far slower than the rest.

The Source engine actually pre-bakes basic global illumination into it's maps. Source 2 STILL does that. Frankly, for most games it's all you need, unless the environment is super dynamic. Minecraft is still the best example of a game that _actually_ benefits from raytraced lighting.

source games kinda look outdated now, but still hold up to being enjoyed, the graphics took a long while to start looking dated and even then it looked fine and did the job, especially with more cartoony games like tf2. The only other game engines that held up like that was the cod infinity ward engine.

A new Half Life game will only be made/released when a new form of gaming is available. So expect Half Life 3 to be released around 2052 when we can play games IN OUR MINDS. That or when Valve needs to make more money.

For those unaware this is community effort setup by Nvidia. The teams behind HL2RA, HL2VR, P17 and RTBR formed Orbifold Studios to make this with RTX Remix since IGN doesnt credit anybody

A Remaster is the exact same game with some minor bug fixes and enhanced visual quality like upscaled textures. A Remake is an experience built anew from the ground up that tries to stay true to the original source material while also adding significant improvements like up-to-date improved gameplay mechanics, quality of life changes, improvements in various other aspects like the AI, Level Design etc. This is a Remaster !

@@Armin2012 Yes, because it covers all the aforementioned criteria. - Gunplay has been completely rebuilt to feel more responsive and up there with modern shooters, while still retaining some of that original feel. - The graphics have not just been upscaled. Entire levels have been re-constructed and the level design has been significantly improved. In addition new assets have been created and so on and so forth. Keep in mind though that Black Mesa is a fan-made remake. For all we know, if Valve were to create their own remake they could've envisioned it in an entirely different way. But judging on the fact they allowed this to happen in the first place and greenlit it to go on sale, they must've been satisfied with the devs' reimagining.

Wow, the RTX comparison looks amazing... wish it could be done for XBOX X with something like Unreal 5+ engine.... The old 360 game looks pretty solid on my 8K TV with XBX. Still a TON of fun to play almost 20 years later.

I'd love to see a full modern remake of the original game. It would sell well, attract new fans that haven't given the original a chance to experience it, and show valve how much love and life still exists in the fanbase.
