The sense of "journey" is the focal point and HL2 feels as big as an open world game without the backtracking. Huge environments that lead you on without waypoints or cut scenes and it still holds up today

Ps3 was definitely below the 360, it was tested several times and it runs at lower resolution and much less smooth.

Its not a Geforce3, its a Geforce 4 prototype made with nvidia and directx team to test the new graphic generations... directx9 was developed from that prototype thats why it can handle the same graphic effects. And the 1.7ghz pentium 4 that HL2 needs... the 733mhz P3 has twice the performance per clock so its like a 1.4ghz P4. The only problem is that the Xbox only can handle 480p... the 128mb/1,5ghz upgraded Xbox can run Half-Life2 at 720p with same graphics as xbox 360.

I'd agree, but the 360 and PS3, the PS3 specifically, were a massive pain to program for. Additionally, 512MB of RAM was getting very limiting, same goes for VRAM and L1/L2. Even back in 2007, valve had to drastically change the effects in portal because they were maxing out the shader caches. Sure, they optimised portal 2 to run on it, which is impressive, but sometimes you need that space to stretch your legs. Sure, we could stay on the current consoles for the next 20 years, and we'd get real gud at optimisation, I'm sure, but that's honestly not practical. Especially not when people are developing games for $2,000 gaming rigs, then trying to port them to $200-300 consoles

This is a game from 2004, it was already a few years old when the 360 and PS3 came out. Of course there's no difference here, since it's all the same game which looks somewhat outdated. To be able to say there's nothing current gen does that last gen couldn't, you'd have to pick 2 games which use each console to the best of their ability. Personally I prefer PC, I'm just saying a game released in 2004 isn't exactly a benchmark for current-gen consoles.

NO, original xbox is not running on DX81 mode, Source2004 engine is DX9 and looks like the xbox one. Only Source2006/2007 upgrades looks better than xbox because theyre DX10/HDR. Its colored differently because Xbox color scheme was designed for CRT TV (not flat) simply as that. If you force HL2 on PC to run on DX8 mode as you said, you lose: - The dynamic lighting (light its transparent, on dx8 its poligonal) - The transparent shaders/reflections (no transparency reflections on dx8, you cant see real crystal effects on dx8) - The independent bump mapping (no light source required) - And a bit more... All effects work on Source2004 engine running on DX9, like them work on the original xbox, omg actually DX9 was the compilation of the code tested on the original xbox. Try Far-Cry or Doom3, the same... on Far-Cry for orignal xbox the DX9 effects are simply abused on the original xbox, the water looks even better than the xbox 360 version. It know that for the first moment, on the old days i only reached xbox graphics on PC when i got the geforce FX5500 dx9. You can also search for the Halo original xbox and PC dx8 port differences... Halo1 had only a few dx9 effects obviously because it was coded on 2001... but even it had less graphic effects on the dx8 PC port you can find videos on youtube about that "downgrade". Its simply as that, DX8.1 was released at same time as Xbox, so the Xbox used a prototype GPU where from 8.1 the directx team hand to hand with Nvidia were testing the new gpu capabilities... and it ended on directx9. Its the same as happened with xbox 360... its 2005 stuff but it can run DX10 effects... more obviously because xbox 360 GPU prototype was the first "unified shaders" GPU ever made, and unified shaders is the technology the DirectX10 exploded... have you seen the lastest FORZA games on the 360? its absurd how a 2005 gpu can hold DX10 and HDR... same for the original xbox, it tested new graphics because the original xbox and the 360 were developed by the own directx team in colaboration with Nvidia and later with ATI... the first xbox had futuristic hardware like an Hypertransport bus lol for absurd high data transfer thats it can use the HDD for virtual memory and its even faster if you upgrade it.

@@Gmodfan750 framerate ≠ monitor refresh rate. you can have hl2 running at 300fps (you can make that higher or lower with fps_max command) but your 60Hz monitor will still display 60 frames per second. or your 120Hz monitor will do 120 etc

Es debido a que PS3, al igual que Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar, PS2 y N64, fue una consola difícil de programar debido a su compleja arquitectura liderada por el procesador Cell (CPU maestra de la consola), y por sus multiprocesadores (además de las dos particiones de RAM de 256 de VRAM y 256 de RAM común.

La primera xbox fue la mas potente de su generacion, la ps2 no puede con este juego, al menos no a fps decentes

@@proskill7221 directamente no puede por su inferior capacidad de polígonos en tiempo real (menos de 20 millones puede dar, y creo que es mucho lo que vimos en Shadow of the Colossus), sus resoluciones en la mayoría de los juegos límite de la PS2 corren a 512x448i o menos y no en resolución nativa como Xbox/DC/GC (640x480p en casi todos los juegos). Además, tiene solo 32 MB De RAM vs 64 de Xbox, una GPU mucho más anticuada que la versión customizada del NVIDIA GeForce 3 de Xbox, pero una mejor CPU. PS2 es al menos unas 3 veces menos potente que Xbox.

@@proskill7221 a pesar de que Half Life se ve bien en PS2, tiene muchos bajones de frame-rate, debido a que Valve en los primeros años de existencia de PS2, además de ser difícil de programar (cosa que explica la razón de que muchos juegos, alrededor del 90% del catálogo no tenga antialiasing debido a que PS2 no posee antialiasing por hardware, debe hacerlo por software rendering, Half Life solamente usó una unidad vectorial (VU's representan los "medidores" de rendimiento en la consola, son como las 2 CPU's del Sega Saturn, que trabajando en conjunto eran muy superiores al GTE de PS1. Como dato curioso, muchos no saben que Sega Saturn SI ES más potente que PSX, especialmente para renderizar 3D. De hecho, la supera en todo, excepto en calidad de audio en juegos third party y transparencias, debido a que era más difícil hacerlo mediante interpolación de VDP1 y VDP2, o por software rendering como Burning Rangers. Sin contar que al menos el 70% de los desarrolladores solo usaban 1 CPU en lugar de sincronizar ambas para un rendimiento casi comparable al rápido 3D de N64, consola "novedosa" en su época. Como consecuencia, el catálogo de Saturn estuvo plagado de juegos con apartado gráfico y resoluciones y cosas técnicas "inferiores" a PSX, cuando es todo lo contrario si vemos Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Saga, Sonic R, Last Bronx, Radiant Silvergun, Virtua Fighter 2, Shenmue Saturn y el cancelado límite absoluto de Saturn: Virtua Fighter 3 que eran o iban a ser los "destructores de PlayStation"). Volviendo al caso de Half Life, el juego solo usó una VU, dando como resultado inesperado muchos bajones de frame-rate y una mísera resolución de 512x448i (el juego corre a 60fps, igual que en PC y Dreamcast, pero tanto la versión de DC como la de PS2 bajan a 17 o 23fps en momentos que incluso no hay mucha "acción" en el juego. En los casos de muchos enemigos o disparos o de mundo más expandido, puede bajar como a 11 o 10fps como Duke Nukem Total Meltdown y MDK en PSX), todo por una optimización no tan "buena" que digamos...

+Gamerox YT About your HDR argument: Look up "Half-Life 2: Update" on Steam. That mod does quite a bit of graphical improvement on HL2 without changing its style, while also providing full HDR.
