I remember reading somewhere that Half Life's audio is actually lacking features on modern hardware. Something that came along with the Sound Blaster audio card called EAX? I wonder if there would have been a significant difference in that DSP Effects room.

You're right. I think it's because at some point Gabe Newell disregard Microsoft and remove MS's proprietary features from HL in effort to went Microsoft-free. Among the removed features are Direct3D rendering and EAX Reverb. But you can restore the EAX effects with a mod called MetaAudio.

@@andhieyusuf7008 eax is from creative, not microsoft and directx is FORCED in source games no more opengl there someone said "hey could you remove directx, you can't use it on linux, and the half life 1 implementation sucks" i wouldn't have removed it, because its and optional feature, but they did nothing at going microsoft free directly

3:03 I remember looking at the Half-life trailer and it having that part in it. As a kid, it scared the living shit out of me. But I was always confused why they weren't in the game. @@ElephantsDoingCrack That's because HL1 and 2 don't necessarily follow the slasher horror genre to a T (Alien/Aliens, The Thing, Terminator), but they also implement comedy like in Day of the Dead and have parts that resemble classic disaster movies like The Towering Inferno or The Titanic with massive stuff being destroyed all around you.

The mech in the high-poly count room looks just like a zentradi battle pod from Robotech ( or macross if you are not American), aside from the coloration.

My little theory and observations: I believe the older Gold Source engine is used to build Source on, the lighting is almost 1:1 from the Alpha and not Retail GS, the sound is also the same, (The OG leak and not the Mega build you can hear the zombies only loud if you look directly at them but if you move your head to the right or left you cant hear them at all even if they are right next to you) something that also kind of backs this up is the Head bobbing from left and right like in quake, it was in this build and in the Half-Life leak, if you were to make a "Multiplayer" game the head bobbing will be enabled which is no where in Retail source.

Might be possible that they reused the Alpha engine code for Source. Similar to how they used a little bit of Quake engine's code for making GS.

Actually Source was made out of the Havok Engine primarily using it's physics modules. Like idTech2(Quake), Valve got the rights to use the engine and heavily modify it to make GoldSrc same thing happened with Havok being heavily modified to make Source.

@@qwertyiuwg4uwtwthn Ignore OP and dracmeister, they don't know what they're talking about. This alpha engine was an early version of GoldSource, it was actually being called "Valve Game Engine" at the time. However, they always internally referred to it as "Source" as a lazy shorthand for the name of their engine source code directory, which was "src", short for source, short for source code. GoldSource is actually a fork of Source created at the end of HL1's development. It was called "gold" because the game was "going gold", an industry term for creating the "gold master" copy which meant it was the finalized build to have discs pressed at the factory. The reason for this is because they were constantly iterating on Source, and did not want to accidentally break HL1 with their experimental new features. GoldSource was patched every once in a while after HL1 was released for bugfixes and QOL improvements, but most of its changes never found its way back to Source. The Source engine we know today is the result of 6 years of iteration.

Your description about model animation prior to Half-Life is outright wrong. It's not that a model has multiple parts (Half-Life's models have this too) but because Quake models simply have no bones, so Quake needed to move every single vertex of the model's mesh in order to animate it. Skeletal animation means there are meshes, and there are bones. vertices on the meshes are assigned to the bones. So animating the model is reduced to only moving the bones, and the vertices of the meshes follow their assigned bones.

@@RadiationHazardYT Geoff seems to not want to upload his without permission from Valve, and he also seems to not want to ask Valve for permission. As for others who received press copies of early builds, it's hard to say. Perhaps they're locked away in back rooms somewhere collecting dust.

I always thought that Ivan the Biker had a thick russian accent who took quite a lot of military courses(achieving the rank of Captain or Colonial) and then later due to a freak accident due to a couple of people monkeying around with grenades Ivan decided (after his surgery) to take up science and pursue theoretical physics. before we got Gordon Freeman.

Using a snes game to show dithering and saying ti was used to overcome hardware limitations is a bit unfortunate. The snes has hardware support for a variety of transparency effects.

I've always wondered? Is half-life just a fancy quake mod? Like can you use quake commands in the game? Because if it's a mod of the quake engine shouldn't there still be remnants of quake in the game or the engine?

You could say “fancy quake mod” but that’s like saying a child is a “fancy clone” of their parent. Yeah they share DNA, but are two completely different things. The code and tools that run Half-Life is WAAYYYY different than Quakes.

but there are many early weapon designs that were found, like a early gluon gun and tau cannon, aswell as a early rpg. very interesting stuff. (man this makes me wish the build shown off in half-life: preliminary findings was released which not only contained a early on a rail. but a early surface tension aswell.)

Transparency wasn't exactly revolutionary at the time. It's a bit ironic that you use Mega Man X4 as an example of dithering being the standard, since the PlayStation version of that game had actual transparency for the background spotlights.
