Half-Life: The Lore Behind The Civil Protection

The Civil Protection roam the streets of City 17 and other major settlements are the wasteland, but who are they and what do they do? I went to a post-Combine Earth to find out.
I started Skyrionn to go back and look at easter eggs and the little details in classic video games. From that, I’ve moved on to looking at timelines and lore in video games.

The art direction for the posters (but HL2 in general) is absolutely inspired. Like I’d put a combine poster in my room ffs.

It would be cool if during the rebellion, the civil protection join the resistance against the Combine. After all they have no loyalty to the Combine and only joined for more privileges. After the Citadel Portal storm is destroyed, they could see this as “woah, I had no faith in the resistance, but maybe they can beat the Combine, maybe WE can beat the Combine. I am ready to fight back.”

It is, at least, mentioned by Barney in Episode 1: "Now it looks like we are going to have to cut a path through every chicken shit metrocop who is having second thoughts about defending City 17!" I'm sure there were quite a number that would have turned.

@@ryanw1541 Noticed how he said “cut through” though. It would be cool if some resistance members looked like they had some different clothing because maybe they had the combine pants and undershirt but some resistance clothing covering it. Something like that.maybe we’ll see it in Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

Rebels literally have CP vests, so I'd say most CP probably look like your regular resistance member. Tbf they really don't have a reason to wear Civil Protection uniform and especially the gasmasks

I gotta say, CP uniform does good job at dehumanising humans For example, Combine gasmasks are based on a real gasmask that was made in 1970s or around this time and this exact gasmask is used by Combine, even though there's much more better gasmasks out here. And HL2 Beta showed this to be even better, because Citizen gasmasks had big see through visor, while CP and Combine Soldier looks exactly the same

I like Ross Scott's depiction of Civil Protection: they're just normal people being bored cops in a world that happened to be conquered by the Combine

you forgot to mention that they are getting forced to beat people and do stuff like that. The reason why that CP forced you to pick up the can was basically Combine gave them orders to show the power of C17. If they weren't forced then they wouldn't be annoying or beating people anyway. Another thing, Combine turns them into Combine Soldiers even if they don't want to become OTA (Combine Soldier)

I already work as a Police Officer now so I’d assume if the combine invaded they would probably force me to become a Civil Protection Officer against my will. I mean, I’d assume that they probably forced military personnel to join the Overwatch so I wouldn’t be surprised if they forced police to join the CP. However, I’d probably start working as a spy for the resistance (similar to what Barney did).

I wanna point out, the noise made on the Combine radios is likely it sending information over the radio in the same way routers would do so over phone-lines. The noise sounds really similar to old dial-up modems when they'd request access to the internet.

would probably join civil protection and leave it once Gordon Freeman showed up. after all, my identity is unknown to the people around me... there'd be literally no consequences, and the life in city 17 is obviously survival of the fittest. not only would i gain privileges like more food but i'd also bypass the possibility of being sent to nova prospekt... also i'd get to batter people with a stunstick, so yeah, like... pros vs. cons, i'd probably go for it, if only temporarily.

You would be a high priority target though, the Combine would hunt you more than normal resistance members if you abandoned Civil Protection. Also I'm pretty sure some CP's are brainwashed so... good luck leaving. What I'd do is Join Civil Protection and once the Cidital started to blow up I would join the Resistance if I could resist the brainwashing (if they do that), safer than straight up leaving the Civil Protection and going on your own.

I'm pretty sure you cannot use Combine Soldiers uniform because it's literally a part of their body however Resistance uses CP bulletproof vests
