Harley Benton is aware of the issues and have tested units in house. The results I found in my video are correct and they are working with the factory to fix the problem, which is small and WILL be taken care of. When they are back in stock, the LINE outs should work as expected.

I plug my amp straight into a two notes cab m and then that goes out to the old Harley Benton power attenuator to take the load. It wasn’t great at attenuating but is a great dummy load and fine to use if you’re not using the outputs on the device itself 👍

I read somewhere that it might have some reactive components in it as well. Anyway, it does not change the tone of my small 10-watt combo. I just use it for attenuation, it´s fine.

Great review! It seems like if they can sort that issue with the line and balanced out’s they’d sell loads of these. Come on Harley Benton, you can do it! Let us know in an update if they offer any comment on this please Henning!

like with all the old versions of that attenuator it line and balance dont work. they will probably never work properly. maybe its because it is a resistive attenuator. i had one from the 100 series (with new logo) and it gave me distorted line out but undistorted balance out. BUT it gave feedback and squeal like crazy once the amp got cranked. would be interesting to know if the jet city attenuator they copied also has these issues.

I also use a Blubox and was just wandering, if I can go into the input of the Attenuator without using the speaker output without damaging the amp...so if I got it right, I can use it just as a loadbox for silent recording, right? Cheers Neil, and thanks for your explanation!

There are two types of resistance: active (heating elements like in your electric kettle, boiler etc) and reactive (capacitors and coils, bobbins). Reactive means your amp sees your attenuator as one big speaker coil.

Regarding the Load Box functionality. The Harley Benton pa80 takes a characteristic and dynamics of a speaker it is connected to (if it is connected to a speaker). So even if it is resitive it does not matter if you can turn up the volume. With some blanckets put on the speaker I had better results with HB Pa80 than torpedo captor. Torpedo captor is better for silent though. Does this new do that as well?

As I understand it, compared to the regular Two Notes Torpedo Captor 4/8/16 (not the Captor X!) the main difference in spec is that this can take 250W compared to 100W of the Two Notes. The price of the two notes IS more, but not as much as the other competition (Suhr, Ox, Waza TAE, etc). That device can attenuate down to -20dB or act as load for complete silence. It has usable Line and Balanced output, and can be phantom powered. The in-build speaker emulation can be switched on/off and it comes with a basic license of the Wall of Sound plugin if you want to some free speaker sounds in your DAW (of course you can load your own IRs with your choice of plugins, etc). I have been looking for a second affordable attenuator / load which I can use for recording (lets blend some amps baby!) - and even if this worked (which you show it does not!), I dont think I'd take it over the regular Torpedo Captor. I say that with the price difference (~€79) in mind, as it is much closer than the alternatives you mentioned (e.g. Captor X, Ox, etc). Thanks for another great review my friend.

@@quiksilver78 YES, I cant believe I didnt mention that, but its another advantage of the regular Torpedo Captor. You do get a lot more for those extra €80. I think the HB device is only becomes worth considering when the issues Henning pointed out with recording outputs are solved AND it is switched to a reactive type load circuit. Then, it would offer similar features as the Two Notes, but at a lower price points with less bells and whistles (e.g. phantom power, and bundled plug-in, etc).

I would highly recommend the TAD Silencer, it can handle anything up to 150w. I use one for a 150w Stoneham (Sunn) Model T clone & I can fine tune it even for use in my flat at night, even through a 4x12. Only downside is is that it doesn't have a multiple switch for different ohm settings. You have to buy a 16Ohm, 8Ohm, 4Ohm or a 2Ohm (75w). Still, you can put two of cabs into each one providing they're the correct Ohm.

Darius Molotokas they all change sound, it doesn't meter if you threw big sum on reactive. It is good myth abused by brands, some will say it is better but in the end any attenuator change the sound. It's not a big deal imho , that all depends from your subjective feeling.

That and he should definitely be using an IR without the inbuilt frequency compensation.. Cause those are just never good. It just sounds as if I was using my Helix with just an amp model, without a cab model or IR after it. Exactly like that. Cause thats just how amps work.

I have not tried the line out yet. To make things clear: the line out is not emulated (no cab sim), so I could use it with IR's in DAW, right? Have you ever tried it that way?

Really curious to see the insides of it. I am assuming the attenuator is a switched pi-network, but am interested to know if there is a "dumb" resistive load or a reactive load when the load is activated. Worth stating that a "good" attenuator doesn't need to be anything more than a pi, T or L-pad, since the speaker is still connected and provides the reactive component. A reactive load is only necessary where there is no cabinet on the other end.
@eranfalek

True. A reactive load is much better than resistive if you are using it as a load... If you still use a cab, resistive is good enough.

Folks, just don't buy resistive loads. They mess with both the feel and tone of your amp, making it massively worse than it sounds direct to a speaker (a reactive load). Spend the extra money on a proper reactive load and you never have to buy another attenuator. Units like the Fryette Power Station double as a killer all tube poweramp as well so even if their price seems high, you get a lot of value for your money, including adding an fx loop to amps that don't have one.
