So glad I found your channel, and in particular this video. I am not a very balanced rider. I had my new saddle fitted by a master saddler in September... I only ever use premier equine plain cotton saddle cloths, but around November time, by saddler posted an interesting article(shared from somewhere )regarding half pads and how they can benefit riding school ponies because they absorb impact from imbalanced riders. I messaged my saddler to ask if I could use one, and he said the same as you... as long as it’s quality wool and spined. I invested in a merino wool one, and love it. I’ve subscribed to your channel, and now need to catch up on your others.

Just found your channel so pleased I did. So much information in your videos and explained in a way everyone should understand. Thank you for sharing some of your knowledge. One thing you do pick up is how important it is to use a saddle fitter not just a case of well that looks like it fits. Can't understand why you don't have more subscribers. To the point info and amusing too. Got to be the best on you tube👏👍

This video was super nice to watch! I do have a question regarding saddle fit and how half pads may affect them though! My saddle is a TAD form fitting around my horse’s upper shoulder/wither, but as much as I want to get him and I properly fitted and buy a saddle to fit the both of us perfectly, I really don’t have the money to do that type of thing, so I was wondering if a specific type of half pad might help reduce that slight pressure point in any way? Or is there not much of a way to fix it other than by getting a better saddle? Thanks!

Thanks for your informational saddle dissection videos! I watched one while I was taking apart an older wintec of my own. We have mostly beginner riding program and use wintecs exclusively because of all the main points you listed. However, since I often buy used older saddles, I have been learning about some of the problems that can be encounters, in particular, as in the case with this saddle, the disintegration of the plastic between the panels and the tree on the back half of the saddle. So my question: can replacement plastic be purchased? Or can the saddle be put back together and used without that plastic? Thanks!

I bought a Thorowgood saddle. Changeable gullet, wool flocking. Fits my boy perfect. Not sure if I should use a half pad still.should I use it?

Hi, My saddle is fitted but it can slip to the right so I have been recommended a acavello gel pad to prevent slipping. What do you think of the gel pads?

Hi! How you doing? I have a question, do I need a half pad with a Wintec saddle with HART for the distribution of pressure?

I do have a question. I was always taught wool halfpad should go under the saddle. But when I do it people look at my like I have 5 heads. It’s my underfunding it’s how it is supposed to be used. I assume the shift is because half pads are expensive, and so they put them over the saddle pad to keep them cleaner. But there’s so much more benefit to the wool to be directly on skin. When I asked my stübben saddle, fitter, if I should use a pad with my saddle because my horse needs to gain a little muscle or saddle, doesn’t fit as it should right now, she advised that I was correct and I should use the half pad under my saddle pad m is there any actual difference or benefit one way or the other?

Thank you for this! My lad has his Bowen therapist out yesterday and she noted that his saddle isn’t sitting quite right on him, so whilst I wait for my saddler to sort an appointment, I have been looking at half pads. I like the idea of them as a shock absorbing, comfort and pressure distribution, as my lad is getting on now and I want to make sure he has everything he needs to be happy and healthy as we carry on our riding adventures - are there any particular brands you recommend I do some research on and ask my saddler about? I must admit I do like the fluffy looking ones as they’re very pretty 😍, but I also like the idea of memory foam/ shock absorbing ones too :)

The sheepskin ones came up slightly better in all the research that was done. But you have to make sure you get a proper (real) shepskin... and also with the clear channel. Plus nice shape at the front. So, LeMieux are always a good brand to look at.

What about the VIP pads. They sound like the most amazing thing to put on a horses back, but has their been any testing of them by a independent non biased company?

To be honest, I don’t know. I have been in contact a few times with them, as I am often asked about them but so far haven’t heard back. They’re super busy at the moment. I do seem them out and about sometimes at fittings and a lot of people seem to really like them. But I am not sure about the testing xx
