When the Trek Fuel EXe was launched, it made waves in the EMTB world thanks to its geometry, design, and the TQ motor housed within it. New for 2024, Trek has released a more affordable option - the Fuel EXe Alloy. With it being half the price of its carbon fibre counterpart, is it half the bike? Steve Jones set out to find out...

👍A flying machine that over 25km/h has no resistance at all, that's how every SL Emtb feels in comparison to a non SL Emtb and the bike you build yourself at a good price today with top spec full carbon, with full XTR, Roval carbon wheels and with a 170mm Fox Factory 36 fork, which is last year's 35Nm Specialized SL frame at half the price with range extender and y-cable included. This is the lightest and most fun bike that gives me the most training uphill and downhill because of this weight and 170mm front suspension travel which gives me the right geometry on the deal. I also have 170mm Öhlin air and coil forks on my two other not quite as light 150mm suspension bikes, which makes these what I think are the "best all-round bikes"😋. I understand and now accept why a lighter bike has such an outrageously higher price/less weight and that's why I spend far too much money on these Emtbs that give me so much joy I could never get from any other form of exercise in my 58 years😊

It's not really half the price. If you compare the carbon XT vs. the alloy XT bike, the price difference is about $2100. Besides the carbon frame, the carbon 9.8XT also comes with carbon wheels, carbon cranks, and the expensive carbon bar/stem combo. It also has a higher spec suspension. When you consider all of this, the alloy bike doesn't look like as much of a bargain.

They've also upped the prices so the 5 is the same price as the 9.5, and the 9.5 is now more expensive with dogshit spec. No wonder nobody is buying them.

👍I guess that it is not only from carbon to Aluminum that makes this big price difference, I guess that it is also about the type of spec such as XTR to SLX etc. It is wise to be able to easily remove the light battery on an SL bike and have, as you Smith points out, an extra battery in the backpack instead of a range extender in case you want to take a longer ride, which means that the bottle holder comes to its proper use😉

Great to see reviews of alloy bikes, so often the ones sent to be reviewed are top spec carbon but you really can't beat a well spec'd alloy for value, look at the rail 9 for example. In nz it is on sale for around 9k which is around 4k kess than an equivalent spec levo.

I don't think this such a bargain as you think it is. you can pick up a carbon 9.5 for around 6 grand, and kit it out over the time to your heart's content. I hope they put abit more paint on the thing cos mine chips away when you stare at it too long. I hope they sorted the bottom linkage for the rear shock. After having ridden my 9.7 for near to 3,000 km im happy to say it is definitely the best bike i've ever had. you're not going to keep up with full power ebikes, even if you carry a spare battery around. Happy to see the alloy version around, many positives about an aluminium frame for sure.

When I left analogue cycling to go electric I noticed the weight difference but relished the advantages more than I lamented the weight gain. Similarly I like the low cadence support of a high torque motor so offering me less weight at the cost of wearing myself out frantically pedaling is not an attractive preposition.

Love my Orbea Rise M10, but I wish it had beefier suspension but I am upping the front Fox 36 to 160 which will help geo (slacker) and downhills. Where the motor is a little noisy it's very very good - 60nm and a stack of mileage especially with the alloy H15 with it's 540 battery. I've got the standard 360wh battery and don't have any range issues but do have the 270wh range extender which gives huge mileage. Tough to beat a 2022 Orbea M10 with full XT, Fox 36 etc for £5.5k

My wife and I have the 9.5 and 9.7 carbon models and we LOVE them. Very natural feeling with enough support to offset my overweight, middle-aged body. It makes me feel 25 years younger and 50 lbs lighter. I recently demoed a carbon Levo SL and the Fuel EXe is a little heavier, firmer/stronger, provides more power, is quieter, and feels more natural. The Levo feels more like a lightweight XC bike whereas the Fuel EXe almost feels like low travel enduro. The Fuel EXe is a much better bike IMO.
@hugemoas

@@mikestephenson4941 My wife and I felt the SL was louder,not as refined as than the EXe, and the power difference was very noticeable. The EXe is a slightly heavier trail bike that covers a wide range of uses and is much better suited for heavier riders. It's fine as an XC bike but a much better trail bike that could do some light Enduro work. IMO

I just bought the 9.5 in the sale, I had to change the fork because the 35 eMTB fork is garbage and there are several components which are obviously cheap. Eg the brake levers. Now with a fox 36 it’s all the bike I’ll ever need. But I would have happily got this alloy version with full xt if it was the same money. Super efficient bike as well. The TQ isn’t faultless by the way - known rattle at low torque applications which is pretty annoying… helluva a bike though.

I was going to get the EXE last year but I ride with people with full power bikes. I bought a Liv Intrigue Elite 2 (womans M, reach is between mens S and mens M), which allows me to ride full power or low power as desired. That said, there's definitely a lot more battery management required because of the smaller batteries (if riding the standard 400Wh). Regarding the system weight being so much less than normal bikes, the battery is half the size... The Liv is 21.6kg (with a Fox Float X2 and a few other mods) and around 23kg with the range extender (600Wh all up)

My biggest downside for embt is you don't get as much workout on daily basis you should from mountain biking to keep you fit and that extra weight that making riding dumb. Prices in premium bike segment are just out of hand. In EU, a average monthly salary is 800-2000€ after taxes, making up to a YEARLY income of 10k - 24k Close to none in EU will buy a bike worth almost their whole years salary. I will never buy a ready to ride bike aggain. Buy a frame and built the bike yourself. Way cheaper. Stock bikes usually have shit rims, tires, stem, handlebar, grips, saddle & pedals. You guys with your stupid model year designation. I thought there was a successor for next year. Thereby only the Alloy, which was already 2023 on the market. It is a 2023 bike. The year it came out. Not 2024...

Owned a pivot sl for awhile and terrible suspension tune . Motor mounts creaked right out the gate . Gen 3 Levo has been way better to own . Maybe I should’ve got the pivot LT instead . All I can say is Demo them all and take your time . Buy the less spec cheaper bike and upgrade parts as you go .

I would spend the extra couple of K and actually have the better parts. Much better deal than the cheaper version.
