Scenes from Clonmel on a quiet afternoon in early spring.
Farmers, workmen and children on the streets of Clonmel are caught on film as they go about their business. Most are more than happy to wave to the RTÉ camera crew.
‘Ballymagash’ was born out of the earlier satirical programme ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ which featured the fictional village. The first episode of ‘Ballymagash’ was broadcast on 10 January 1983; the series was produced by John Keogh and Peter McEvoy and ran for 10 episodes. Similarly to ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’, ‘Ballymagash’ opened with scenes from various villages and towns in Ireland.
Ballymagash was a fictional any town that was not too far away from many an Irish town. While presenter Frank Hall and producer John Keogh never specified the exact geographical location of Ballymagash, it was billed in the RTÉ Guide of 7 January as,
A town a few miles from almost anywhere in Ireland.
This episode of ‘Ballymagash’ was broadcast on 14 February 1983.

I grew up in those times too, am also a bit nostalgic in spite of my childhood being repressed and laden with guilt. My parents weren't monsters -- they did the best they could, but that was all they knew how. (Being obsessively religious was a factor.) But yeah, I'd say being a kid these days -- it's hard to get away from your phone. Likewise for a high percentage of adults I guess.

It was nice times but there were underlying issues too. Remember Ann Lovett and the Kerry babies ... lots of children being abused too. There's never a perfect time... every era has it's challenges.

Halls Pictorial Weekly. "Ballymagash 2 Miles" added to the sign at the end. Those signs were legendary, alas many a person died because people swung them around through divilment and an ambulance went the wrong road...........

It's a Humber Sceptre I think. Same stable though - Rootes in Coventry. They just changed grilles and interiors and produced a few different iterations of the same model. Singer Vogue was another one.

@@JohninRosc No it's a hunter alright. The last of the line Hunters used the sceptre grille. You can see that other than the grill the car has very basic trim and wheels. A sceptre would have had a vinyl roof, tinted glass, more chrome, snazzy hub caps and overriders on the bumpers. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNaWa7mVlcDLpY0.html

Nostalgia can be a bit deceiving. Ireland may have been predominantly Irish back then but god was it so insular and quite frankly oppressive. The church was up to all sorts, that poor girl who died giving birth in a graveyard etc. I think the influx of foreigners has been good for Ireland - made it more broad minded and tolerant. People are basically the same no matter where you live and it's a bit rich for us to be moaning about immigrants when we had so much emigration and experienced such discrimination abroad ourselves.
