They didn't screw it up because it's still there and they can choose not to watch the live action. Disney made the live action for the new generation of kids who probably wouldn't like the boring old version where Ariel's singing is plain and flavourless.

I hated the original and only watched the live version because of Halle and liked it. She's perfectly casted.

I honestly don’t think the Little Mermaid live action could have worked as well with anyone else. It’s such a hard role bc of the singing but also the non-verbal acting she had to pull off. 👏

@@eclergt9926 To me this story is much more complete than the original. It extends for 50 more minutes and it never feels like there's wasted screen time. There are new songs which are very magical and charming. The acting for many characters like Ursula, Scuttle, Sebastian, and others is just really well made and it's fun to watch. Ariel is the most controversial one, but for me Halle simply has that charm, not only because of her beautiful voice, but her expressions capture Ariel's curiosity, kindness and passion. Some say the visuals for the under-the-sea scenes are very dull looking, but for me the trailers don't do them justice. The backgrounds are very full of life and color; obviously not to the extend of being completely saturated like in the original film, as it's a live action and it's meant to look more "realistic", same with Ariel's hair color. To me it's just a very successful remake.
