After Michael Myers slashed his way through Haddonfield, the box office ate up Halloween. It was only a matter of time before a sequel got green lit, and another trip to the costume store was made. Carpenter tried to resist but was drawn back in by the offer of a decent paycheck. Here, he would create one of the most controversial elements of the Halloween mythos and the driving force of influence for the series until Halloween 2018. What ensued was a feud between writer and director, lost masks, and a showdown that ended up not being as final as they thought. Find out exactly what happened with Halloween II on this episode of WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
This episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie was Written by Bryan Wolford, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Me too I am so over everyone overhyping it being bad just because John Carpenter said it. Like come on, it’s a good film. He trashes on other Halloween films all the time. He had his way and made Halloween III which veers straight into crazy town. Perfect for those who do not enjoy slashers AT ALL. Great for those who love Halloween 3 but JC obviously didn’t like slashers and that’s a shame. But just cuz he doesn’t like it doesn’t meant we shouldn’t be able to like Halloween II.

I know, I don't get the hate for this movie. Sure the inconsistencies are a little jarring only if you watch them back to back. The Laurie sister twist was amazing and it gave reason to Micheal escaping and going back home to finish off the rest of his family. The movie also gave the series a proper ending, killing off Micheal and Loomis to the point that they shouldn't ever be able to come back. But money talks, and the failed Halloween 3 idea didn't work, so bring back Micheal to take on Freddy and Jason.

@@Fezzy976 don’t get me wrong, I love almost every Halloween movie, and I’ve probably watched everyone of them multiple times, so in a way I appreciate the sibling component, because it’s given us all these sequels, but… in the original 1978 Halloween, the idea that there was no rhyme or reason for Michaels Myers random killings, makes it scarier. There is no understanding as to why its happening, and by nature we fear what we don’t know or understand. It’s also more realistic, like in the randomness that serial killers’ victims are people they don’t know and don’t have clear motive’s to their murders. All the same, I love the whole franchise, so I’m not complaining.
@Fezzy976
@Fezzy976 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryangoyette3570 Oh no dude I totally agree and see your point. I just feel that this movie gets over the top hate. Its a sequel, it directly follows the original, so it had to "up its game" otherwise its just a repeat of the original in a different setting. I think it did up its game in terms of voilence, gore, character development and story. I also felt like its ending was perfect, with Loomis finally catching up with Micheal and ending him once and for all. It also has a pretty definitive ending with the explosion and fire. We didn't need the sequels (even though I too loved them all on their own merit). The idea to make the franchise into a sort of anthology with different stories, whilst not a bad idea, just didn't work and because of the popularity of Freddy, Jason and the slasher genre the fans begged for more so they had to bring Micheal back. I felt like this was a bad move and would of preferred to have followed Laurie, seeing how she copes with the aftermath, all her friends dead, he crush dead, learning about her real family, her decent into some form of mental illness from the truma of the events of the first two movies, whilst being haunted by images of Micheal and how she overcomes these horrors. I feel like this could of been a different form of horror, a more grounded and reality based horror. We have all seen countless slasher movies where we see the actual events of murder but rarely do we see the aftermath. I think this could of been a great direction to go in, making Halloween the more mature, adult, and focused slasher movie franchise seperating it from the sort of tongue-in-cheek horror that Freddy and Jason had become. I still love me some Halloween 6 though for its sheer campiness :P

I don’t mind Michael being related to Laurie, and actually like that twist. It gave a reason to why Michael stalked her in the first movie. Michael kills all his victims immediately when he sees an opportunity to, but Laurie is the only victim that he played hide-and-seek and peek-a-boo with. Without that familial explanation, why was he watching her through the school window and behind picket fences? Was he just a shy boy with a crush on her? Nah, it just doesn’t work without that familial connection because of how Michael acted in the first movie, and how he’s acted in every single movie since.
@07foxmulder

Because he saw Laurie drop her dad’s keys off to his family home before she went to school. That’s why he followed her. But you’re right. Laurie’s foster dad asked her to drop keys off to the house her sister was murdered in, on the anniversary of her murder, while her brother just happens to be there waiting for her because he knew she would still be in the exact same town and knew exactly how she would look. Kind of makes Final Destination seem practical.

He wasn't just stalking her, he followed her friends too. Notice how in the original they aren't in his way at all? Yes we're shown that he follows her mostly but it's because she's the main character. Why is it not acceptable that he's an escaped mental patient who went back to his hometown n started stalking a group of young girls because he's a mental patient..

You're looking at it with the knowledge of all the other Halloween movies man. Erase everything you know about Halloween, and rewatch the first one. Michael just goes home, then Laurie walks up to his front door, and Michael is standing right there, and immediately starts stalking her And her friends. There's no rhyme or reason why. Halloween was originally named "the baby sitter murders" he's just killing babysitters.

Halloween II is primarily the reason why I was terrified of “The Shape” as a kid. I don’t remember seeing the original Halloween, but I think once I saw Halloween II, I became familiar with Michael Myers all too well. The revamped Halloween theme in the opening credits of Halloween II also became a terrifyingly nerve wrecking precursor to the frightening death scenes that awaited me later in the film. The death scene that really traumatized me when I saw it as a kid of course was the scalding/drowning of nurse Karen scene. It really did a number on me back then. Lol But, overall because of the slow building suspense and atmospheric cinematography of Halloween II, it is the most memorable and truly terrifying sequel in my opinion out of the entire Halloween series. I’m excited to see Halloween Kills, but I honestly wish that Halloween II was included in the events of Halloween 1978.

Even IF you buy that he survived the explosion, Halloween 2 should have been the end of the "series" Halloween 4-Resurrection shouldn't have happened. The thing about the brother sister twist that people seem to forget is that HII was intended as the end of the Michael Myers storyline. It’s not this movie’s fault that they decided to keep bringing MM back. If you keep that in mind, it’s not that bad of a twist. Also kind of disheartening seeing Carpenter trash the movie and Rosenthal who apparently was just trying to make something similar in tone to the first movie. I don’t know how long it’s been since he’s publicly talked about it, but it would be nice to respect that most fans of the franchise like the movie

Dr. Loomis’s madman like action in Halloween 2, Loomis literally saw Michael fall from the second floor ( which might not kill him depending) but a normal man wouldn’t walk away so easily and he took 6(7) shots. So thinking of it like that Loomis kinda is acting reasonable but still crazy.

There were two versions of the ending, one where Loomis is shocked when he sees Michael is gone after the balcony fall, the other that's in the film is the opposite. It's kind of odd that he is calm and unsurprised, yet frantic in the sequel set on the same night.

I have always considered 78 and 81 to be one long movie. I did see HII first way to young, eight years old, on HBO I think. It gave me nightmares made me uneasy about going into a hospital, something I still don't like doing to this day especially at night. Ironically enough it was also the television cut of HalloweeN, I saw before the theatrical cut, so the whole Laurie sister connection was canon to me before I turned ten in the early '80's.

The only thing I really had an issue with in H2018 was how PTSD'ed Laurie was. It was a one night with a killer and the way she was acting was like it had happened for several weeks and that she was primarily being stalked. Michael was never truly after Laurie, he was just there to kill whoever he pleased. If H2 was considered Canon in this new alternate universe then perhaps I would have accepted her mentality a bit more.

I think we're dancing over something else when it comes to that night. Laurie was in the presence of pure evil, something with no rhyme or reason to it. That, more than anything else, may have been what made the way she was in the current timeline. Once something like that has touched you, you're going to be kind of screwed up. Look how Loomis slowly gets crazier and crazier in the original timeline to see my point.

Whether or not we liked it the cult of thorn(which I thought was garbage) add in gave more depth to why he hunts his family down. I feel like the movies just fail to give us one storyline everyone can be happy with. Since there’s like 5 different universes if you wanna call it that

Atmospheric with some really creative shots and lighting. A few schlocky tropes make their way in which I always ding this movie for, but for the most part this is a damn good slasher movie and is always super rewatchable. I also enjoy the world building that’s going on here-the entire town really becomes a character in this movie with the locals discussing street names and locations with that kind of folksy familiarity you only get when you’re around people from small towns. Also, it gets all the meat and potatoes stuff right: great kills, a creepy version of Michael, a good mask. It’s actually my favorite Halloween movie and I watch it more often than the original.

I'm sorry, but this still the second best one. This one is actually pretty dang good and it is infinitely better than any of the other sequels. The brother thing gives Michael a motive for coming all the way back to Haddonfield, rather than just starting his rampage immediately after escaping the hospital. That plot twist didn't have to ruin any future sequels and saying so is giving a pass to the failures of those later writers and directors. The new continuity also makes no sense. How could one deputy have caught this leviathan, that from the first movie has been shown to be superhuman? He couldn't. Why would this embodiment of evil peacefully sit in a psychiatric hospital for forty years without hurting anyone? He wouldn't. It doesn't make any sense. Furthermore, I'm still pissed about the filmmakers making the claim that there was nothing supernatural about Michael leading up to the 2018 movie, when in that move he does multiple physically impossible things that would require superhuman strength to do. Then in the new movie he kills a significant portion of the Haddonfield population in ways that no human being could possibly accomplish, all after being beaten, stabbed and shot. Shitting on this movie, while fanboying on the new continuity is pretty weak.

I always felt robbed with Halloween II. It not only underutilized Laurie's character, replacing her for more scenes with the uninspiring hospital staff, it absolutely blew the creepiness setting of the hospital. The hospital might be the most ingenious setting for this series and it does not do the awesome setting justice. In fact, much of the hospital's scenes are boring as hell. Despite having such a fantastic backdrop for Michael's mayhem, I actually felt the most engaging parts of the movie happened on the streets of Haddonfield: either Michael's early movie roaming or Dr. Loomis' interaction with Brackett/Hunt.

The best part of the film aside from the incredible score, is the opening 20-30 minutes. It almost seamlessly builds off the tension of the previous film’s ending. (aside from Loomis gaining like 40 lbs on his way down the stairs and his jacket becoming white with an obnoxiously huge collar) In my opinion however, once Ben Traemer dies, the movie declines severely. Bracket who’s conflict with Michael is set up in the previous film with his daughter’s death, is abruptly abandoned, and he’s replaced with another random cop which removes all potential investment with the characters. While Donald Pleasance consistently gave Loomis so much personality and depth, the truth is we no absolutely nothing about him, aside from he was Michael’s psychiatrist. He’s cool to watch, but there’s little to grasp on it as an audience. Laurie Losing all of her friends in one night, Bracket finding out his daughter was killed are emotional tethers for the audience to latch on to. But once Bracket leaves and Laurie is put into a hospital bed, there are no characters left who experienced the horrors of the last film, to cope with those events in this film, so it feels kind of hollow. Loomis once again is aimless, literally being driven out of the movie to be told exposition, and then driven back into the movie at the end. Laurie is sidelined for two thirds of the movie, leaving us with a hospital of disposable horror cliche characters. The hospital setting is a fantastic idea, but falls apart from fundamental flaw: We never get a sense of how many people are in the hospital, characters instead introduced and killed as we go. Where is the mother, and The kid who ate the razor blade? We see them go into the hospital, but we don’t see them leave. There’s no cutaways to other patients in a hospital that would likely have many There’s no sense of geography, or awareness between characters, where any normal group of people would try to group up after the first couple deaths. Here, everyone is just in different rooms doing their own unrelated thing. There’s even an entire room of babies that is completely forgotten about. I think of Prince of Darkness, which is similar in that there’s a confined building full of characters, with evil trapped inside with them. We know where everyone is, where everything is, and what they’re doing. Halloween 2 uses its location just a set up a series of death scenes which is disappointing. The same going for Loomis and Michael who all just seem to teleport to places. Michael disappearing for a good 10 minutes of the movie at one point. Overall, an entertaining movie, with some great scenes and a phenomenal score that improves in the first in my opinion, but as a whole, the film has so many missed opportunities.
