Description:
Halloween Ends is a 2022 American slasher film directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier. It is the sequel to Halloween Kills (2021), the thirteenth installment in the Halloween franchise, and the final film in the trilogy of sequels that commenced with the 2018 film, which directly follows the 1978 film and disregards all other entries. The film stars Jamie Lee Curtis, James Jude Courtney, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Rohan Campbell, and Kyle Richards, and marks Curtis and Nick Castle's final appearances as Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, respectively.
Before the release of Halloween in 2018, McBride confirmed that he and Green had intended to pitch two films that would be shot back-to-back, but decided against it, waiting to see the reaction to the first film. Following the success of the first film, in July 2019, the film's title was announced along with Halloween Kills. After being delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming took place in Georgia between January and March 2022.
Halloween Ends premiered at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on October 11, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States on October 14, 2022 by Universal Pictures. Like Kills, it is also streaming simultaneously on paid tiers of Peacock for 60 days. The film was met with mixed reviews from critics, who noted it as an improvement over its predecessor, but as a weak finish to the trilogy of films, with criticism aimed mostly at the screenplay.

It is refreshing to hear someone say positive things about movies. Nowadays content creators hate to get clicks, and some never even see the movie. Halloween Ends was a fun entry in the series with a very satisfying ending. I loved the Cory storyline and it filled the kill count while Michael grew stronger. People have to understand what Myers went through, he is not going to be at the top of his game. He has been run over, shot, stabbed, fingers shot off, and beaten; he will be weaker. Critics saying Cory was ridiculous to let teens bully him obviously have not seen Funny Games or Eden Lake. I have seen this 3 times in two days and have replayed the final fight with Laurie numerous times. I loved this movie.

A lot of people for some reason expected this movie to be satirical, but if you observe it overall, it's the darkest and most somber movie of the trilogy: it didn't have jokes, depicts Corey's decent into madness very openly, features an underage death, the effect on the people from the events of 2018 is very depressing, Halloween doesn't appear to be celebrated anymore in Haddonfield etc.
@saiyan970
@saiyan970 Жыл бұрын
I don't mind the whole Corey thing, however my biggest problem with this movie is how they handled Myers. Myers was too humanized, too vulnerable, too weak, Corey literally walked up to Myers and pulled the mask off him than wrestled him to the ground as if Myers was an old man (even thought he is old) Myers is the Boogeyman, he is a man with a supernatural side to him, you can't do all these blasphemous things to Myers, it completely ruins his character. I'm also completely against finishing off Myers (in such a FINAL way) the original message of the 78 film was that Myers really was the boogeyman, he is everywhere at once, Tommy even says "you can't kill the boogeyman" that's confirmed at the end of the movie. The way you "kill off" Myers is supposed to be a bit ambiguous, you can have him be shot or stabbed or whatever but not chop off his head or shred him to pieces. The why I would have ended it would be to kill him off but nothing too final than at the end of the movie some time later (maybe the following Halloween) Allison or Laurie look out the window and Myers is there just like in the original than Allison or Laurie blink or close their eyes for a split second in disbelief and Myers is gone (that can be really him or their imagination) it's ambiguous and right before the credits roll you either hear little Tommy say "you can't kill the Boogeyman" or you hear Dr. Loomis say "you've fooled them haven't you Michael, but not me). And that's it, perfect ending that fits with Carpenters original intent for Myers.

Myers should never look “weak.” This movie and the Kills flashback with his arrest really demystified Myers. For this reason, I can’t get behind this movie. Plus, Laurie needed to die with Michael if they were committed to killing off Myers. I’m sure JLC had something to say about that. This movie defeated the entire essence of the ‘78 film. You can’t kill the boogeyman. You can’t kill evil

This movie was terrible and the cory character was totally unnecessary and was a waste of time. Michael survives the beatdown from 25-30 people and kills all of them and has to hide in the sewer to recover??? The writing for the major characters was weak at best and Allyson was a prime example who was lead around like a dog on a leash by cory. Complete waste of time and I hope we never see Halloween come back at all.... @@sweetchristmas92 Dude, the last movie of a TRILOGY is not the time to change and make things different. They should have done this at the start of the whole damn thing. That is why the movie does not work and is not liked. One thing that could have fixed this movie is if we had a familiar character in the Corey role like Cameron or maybe even Laurie herself turning bad, then the story may have worked better at least. To give us this entirely new character and forcing us to like him just did not rub off on well as a narrative.

They disrespected Michael period. Although I liked the Corey Michael thing. This movies focus should of been built around Michael and Laurie ending it not a love story. The battle between the two should of at least been longer. His send off through the streets of haddonfield was good and his dismemberment was ok I just don’t believe they should of showed him getting dismembered. That should of been off screen

I think you hit your review spot on. I thought they really needed more Michael, but it still worked for me. I think had they introduced Corey in an earlier movie or made him a minor character for this one and amped up the amount of Michael then set up for another movie, it may have worked better for others. I also think it’s ridiculous how many people are complaining that Michael is supposed to be supernatural. In the first two he’s shown to be more durable and stronger than a normal person, but the supernatural aspects weren’t introduced until Return of Michael Myers. Since this one only counts the original and the two recent sequels and they set up that he is just a human, it makes sense that him being as old as he is, taking all the damage from 2018 without being treated like he must have been in the original film since he was captured, and living in the sewers for 4 years probably eating rats and dogs, that he would be weakened. Even with all that, I think the finale with Lori was excellent. The shear damage done to Michael’s hand definitely sealed that this was his last fight. I’m torn between if I think Lori should have died with him or not, but I think it works either way, just in very different ways.

Jimmy! I have to take a moment and really thank you for owning your opinion but also allowing everyone else to have theirs. I've been so ... I guess turned off is that right word here... By the Halloween fandom. Your words on how you just have a ton of fun seeing these movies really connected with me because that's the way I approach it. The fandom will condemn anyone with a different opinion than their own which is so toxic and childish. Ultimately, these movies are about having fun and being entertained. Some work more than others do, sure. But I do feel like so many fans expect Michael and these new films to be portrayed a certain way and if it's not that... It's "awful", garbage", or "disrespectful to the original". Ugh. Nothing will ever top or beat the original. But, fans have to have an open mind that they sometimes will take risks with these films and that's totally okay. I absolutely agree with your opinion on this film and just had to say keep doing what you're doing dude! 👍👍👍 Finally a KZfaq critic that isn't so negative and toxic.

Apart from some great moments, I intensely dislike Kills (Lol), but Ends has redeemed this timeline for me. I was so relieved. There was a moment about a third into the film where I'm like, "Where's Michael?", but I was immediately sucked back into the world created in this film and just let all that go. I would have had an issue with it if I thought the film was bad, but I think it's the best written, shot, directed and acted of all David Gordon Green's entries. You mentioned I think in your last video that the characters felt like real people in this one, as opposed to props like they did in Kills - I also agree with that. Much better writing. But I appreciate H18 and Kills because it's connected to 78 and keeps John's original vision in tact. So it baffles me why they decided to do what they did, kinda. I know they wanted to do something different but to me H ends contradicts not only 78 but H18 and Kills. Both in film and lore but also Michael Myers. Everything those films established is contradicted in this new film. I get what they were trying to do but it just doesn't land to me. I really wish it did. I fel bad for the character Corey, being vilified over a tragic accident to the point he just ended up being 'consumed' by the evil in Michale (?) That he just internally snapped. The fact that the plot is similar to the movie Christine is an interesting idea. Greetings Jimmy. I have enjoyed your channel over the course of this Halloween journey and I appreciate your enthusiasm for this new movie. I just wanted to share some comments here where there are others who see Halloween Ends in a favorable light. First of all, I am one of those people who counts Halloween 3 among my favorites, so I already have a history of finding the gold in the black sheep of the franchise. With regards to Halloween Ends, I have watched the film twice now and I am convinced that it is a masterpiece of symbolism and allegory. It also dives deep into the lore of what exactly Michael is, but it does these things without ever making it obvious or saying it out loud. I think this is where the film divides fans. People who just want a basic slasher bloodbath will not go into this movie looking for subtle cues like changes in the lighting or the significations of the 13th Tarot card to drive the story--but indeed, it is these types of things that truly flush out what is going on the entire time. The symbolism is thick in this film--for example, there are several moments when Corey is being rejected or abused when he is bathed in blue light. Michael's lair is also filled with blue light. This is a call out to the subtle blue used for Michael in the original Halloween. The culmination of this symbolism is the scene where Corey--right after locking eyes with Michael--ducks in front of the pipe leading out of the sewer hideout, bathed in blue light and now a dark shape in his own right. The image is literally the symbol of rebirth. These cues show us the moments when Corey is literally being born to darkness. Another example: Lorie writes about Fate at a certain point in her memoire. This is intercut with scenes building to the relationship of Allyson and Corey. It will be recalled that the first time Lorie ever saw Michael, it was while he stood across the road from her high school and her teacher was speaking about the unavoidable necessity of Fate. This is related to a segment when Allyson tells Corey that she always felt like she knew him after the babysitting accident and then one day, Lorie finally brought Corey to her. The implications here are deeply philosophical and suggest that just as Michael was an unavoidable part of Lorie's Fate, so too is falling in love with Corey part of Allyson's Fate. This is further elaborated by the constant message in the film that the people of Haddonfield pass their own trauma down to their children. While this is done via abuse with characters like Corey and the band kid, in Allyson's case Lorie passes on her own Fate din spite of trying to make her happy. Indeed, the fact that Lorie passes her Fate to Allyson by trying to improve Allyson's life answers the question asked in her memoire: "Are we controlled by the elements and Fate?" The answer is yes, because even acting on good intent leads to the same outcome. Indeed, Corey too is a victim of Fate--the accidental death of the kid he was babysitting triggered the entire chain of events that lead him to the shape. Fate is also linked to Tarot 13--the Death card--which can represent non-negotiable and transformative events in a person's life. Tarot 13 is linked to the zodiacal sign Scorpio which represents the revelation of things hidden in the underworld as well as transformations of being. In my opinion, the one big mistake in this film was showing Corey wrestle Michael to the ground and steal his mask. They should simply have shown Michael giving the mask to Corey which would have felkt like a tremendous payoff to their previous scenes together. I could go on and on, but Ill just close and say that I believe this movie--and especially the director's cut if we ever see it--will one day be one of the most discussed cult classics of the franchise.

I liked the first two acts of Halloween Ends very much and I was thrilled for act 3 but then act 3 begins and everything they have built up falls apart. Corey is completely wasted after being developed so well as a character and then Michael fights Laurie for 2 minutes and just dies. It felt like they were forcing this to come to an end and did not try out some wild and creative stuff. If you do something different at least have the balls to do it until the end and not just play it safe with a short Michael vs Laurie fight.

I wish the flashback to 2019 actually took place in 2018, so as to even more connect Corey to Michael but show how they were fundamentally different forces of evil. Having Corey be in Halloween (2018), like on the way to babysit or even interact with Allyson while out on a run, could have been a nice set up. Little edits like this in a 5+ hour supercut will make the new trilogy exceptionally stronger.

Before hearing and reading the reviews my expectations were very high. After hearing and reading them, they dropped. I just got home from seeing it and I was very disappointed with how it ended. Michael was barely in it and that “epic” final battle we were all anticipating was a huge let down. They focused way too much on the imposter Michael and his relationship with Allyson. The only high notes were the kills in the movie. Jimmy in the spoiler free review you mentioned one of the kills being off camera to avoid the NC-17 rating? I went with my boyfriend and 2 friends. 3 of us likes it and one friend didn’t. She hated it. It’s the most divisive film I’ve seen I think. I genuinely loved it! Mostly agree with all your criticisms. I wish we had some more Hawkins too. I really have warmed up to Halloween kills but I still don’t love it. Ends works for me so much more. Finally a timeline that has a complete story that honestly satisfies me

I did like the ending bringing Julian back my only disappointment is that Lindsay Wallace didn't have a bigger role since character development from kills....almost every review I've seen the biggest complaint was lack of Myers in it but it delivered the kills so loved it

This is the modern Halloween 3 (considering the fact that the intro credits was the Halloween 3 font). I'm gonna watch again later, but right now I'm processing what I just seen and I liked it. People that don't like this probably would liked it had they not used the Halloween IP and just made it it's own thing (like Halloween 3)

@@rossm7071 I don't think it will. Halloween 3 distanced itself completely in all but name. This film had Micheal and Laurie still in it. I truly believe this film will be remembered as a disappointment and a waste. I came here to see why someone enjoyed the film, im glad you did. I loved the first of this trilogy and like kills, but this was a mess to me, but to each their own

I honestly really wanted to hate it during the first 40 mins. Especially the whole idea of Michael being weak and needing to get his strength back. But that cave scene where Cory lured the cop in and has Michael kill him and finally regains some strength back had something so powerful to it to me. Just the feeling of him being reawakened to a degree. As much as I thought I would hate it, I loved it. I loved the whole movie. Granted there were still things that could have been tweaked but overall it doesn’t deserve the hate it’s been getting. My only gripe with the ending though was that if you are gonna have Michael die, Laurie should have died too. Either that or Michael should have just won. I would have rather seen them both die in a valiant effort though. That’s just my opinion. Overall, I loved it way more than I thought I would and I think it’s one of the better movies of the entire franchise.

I saw the movie tonight and I sort of have mixed feelings. I do agree, I think the writing is great, it has a goal throughout the film and it reaches that goal. For me, it didn't feel like the ending of the trilogy that Halloween 2018 started. I think I would have liked to see the chase throughout Halloween Kills and then have the pay off in Ends, from one complete over arching story. The trilogy seems like a different director directed each one, where they don't totally line up cleanly. But I'm just happy there's another Halloween movie out at the end of the day. I would have loved to see more Michael. But thank you for all your videos, great as always!

agree just for them to make him weak again by letting corey throw him down and take his mask the writing was awful the old homless man literaly said michael drags people in the sewer and they dont come back which states hes still been killing. they say hes a man but no man would get stronger killing folks thats supernatural laurie is just as old as him but shes tthis powerful woman? makes no sense

@@Luvnap yea man writing is back and fourth they basically to me let Laurie decide how the ending would happen she already won in h20 Michael should’ve won or they both die but they disrespected Michael big time I don’t get how people trash resurrection for it but excuse this movie because he’s “weak” but they say he gets stronger with kills?? Makes no freaking sense they made him basically supernatural until the end of ends and said nope fuck that he’s just a man? Bad writing all together

I love your take and insight on this film, Jimmy! It's always a joy to watch big fans of the series find positive attributes from even the most maligned films. You make some interesting valid points in regard to why Myers is the way he is, why he might have let Corey go after their tussle and so on. What I really hope we get, is either an extended cut of this film with scenes that were cut, put back in, or at the very least a lengthy deleted scenes section on the DVD, because while I liked the film, it felt like a lot was cut. Regarding the final battle... I liked it, but I kind of wanted a different location than a kitchen. We already had a kitchen scuffle, briefly in H2018, so while this one was very well done, I was hoping for somewhere new, and for a chase scene with Laurie luring Myers somewhere. I did love the car chipper shot and idea though! Never been a huge fan of too much slow motion, but I still loved that shot of Myers saying bye bye finally. You can even see his brain during it! The SFX were stunning in this! Come on Blumhouse, give us a box set of the trilogy complete with cut footage!

Michael Myers is the personification of evil. He is the boogeyman. And not only is the embodiment of it, he is the face of it. The theme of this trilogy is to understand the nature of evil is to stare directly into and not go completely mad. Dr loomis was a direct line to Michael for years and was in contact with the evil within Michaels eyes and was driven to desperation to stop him. Laurie survived it and came face to face with it and barely survived physically and mentally. Sartain studied it too close and became consumed by it. Michael himself stared into the mirror to look within because he himself was consumed by his own evil. Corey was a vulnerable victimless of circumstances and when faced with the eyes of evil, also became consumed. What DGG does well is that he doesn’t outright say there’s a power to Michael’s mask but it’s clear there is. The mask is a force of nature itself, just like Michael. It’s the scariest feature of the original. Because it truly is empty. It’s devoid of emotion. Almost like a literal mask of what dr loomis describes as an emotionless face, with the blackest eyes. This trilogy isn’t about Michael Myers the man, it’s about the unknowable evil of no reason or origin and it’s gravitational pull to us as humans and what it does to us as a force of nature. And how easily we can become it.
