I found myself laughing at ridiculous it is that 44 years later I’m spending days of research and work to replicate a job that was done in a garage in about half an hour. Although you’re right about the initial look for the mask, by the end of the shoot it had definitely built up some grime and due to that on-the-fly paint method, a good chunk of the white had rubbed off from handling. While this look was definitely not born from method, I think the natural breakdown of the mask over the 20 days of filming ended up working to build even more terror in the mask. I find that level of implied story too enticing to not attempt in my own mask, but I’ll probably do the initial stark-white look next time.

It's on Sean Clarks channel with none other than the man himself Tommy Lee Wallace doing the mask in real time for us horror fans. So the paint was appliance white with the spray and streak n tips hair spray to give it that dark hair look. Also, today's masks look funny on people because they are not making them to the exact size that the screen used mask was. If so, you would see that not everyone will be able to pull.of that "Castle" nor the "Warlock stretch". The closest thing to the correct size of an original 75 Captain Kirk is a 99 Shat. Then again, note that not everyone can wear this mask and look dead on like the film.

This is the way it is when you replicate lots of props. The question is do you want it to look the way it did in real life or do you want it to look like it did on screen? The rehauls are attempting to give you the on screen look in real life.

Cheers! Skin tone is definitely optional, to me it evokes the 78 look a little more than without. However the mask was definitely all white at certain points in the production before the paint wore away, and is all white w/ weathering in the flashback scene from Kills. All just depends on your own preference!

@@michaelbadillo3443 I just went straight to adding the shadows and bringing out the features with an acrylic wash. I also styled the hair. Didn't look as good as this but it evoked the flashback mask from kills which I was happy with

As long as your latex paint layer is fully dry, and you’re not using too much pressure the weathering wash shouldn’t pull any paint off. I try to leave my paint job overnight before I start working with it further

I personally see the 78 mask with a semi gloss finish, but if you’re looking to decrease that I’d recommend just misting it with a Krylon Matte Sealer. Don’t apply it too heavy or you’ll run the risk of paint cracking.

Thanks man! When you say the acrylic mix are you talking about the acrylic weathering wash or the white/flesh coats? I’m using latex based paints for the body coats, but you can definitely use liquid latex mixed with acrylic instead. I don’t use any latex in the washes though. I use Varathane polyurethane but any water based polyurethane will work great.

I would use mask making latex. Not as thin as liquid latex so it won't run and you can get a nice bead
