The tiny village of Hallstatt, Austria, is known as the most "Instagrammable" town in the world. A town that was the inspiration for Arrendale in Disney's, Frozen movie. A town so beautiful a replica of it was built in China. A town where tens of thousands of tourists flock for just a few hours each day to take some photos for Instagram 😳. But do they know WHY this small village of only 725 people is so important? Do they know it has 7,000 years of history and was important all through Europe? On this trip, our family set out to have a fun mountain vacation and learn about Hallstatt while avoiding the cheap tourist traps.

Fresh Forelle is so good. Maybe you teach him to cut it a little more carefully. When doing correctly the whole head and bone including the tail comes off in one piece. He is doing great though. Bravo Griffin. It also makes me happy that you are perfect tourists. Eating and sleeping in the region is very important.

Usually the server would show how to properly dismantle the Forelle and don’t miss out on eating the Bäckchen (cheek) which is a tiny tender piece.

As a scientist, I feel obligated to warn you: Griffin is going to be a scientist, and there's nothing you can do about it. The way he talks, the way he eats a trout (and wants a pocket knife to fillet it), the way he explores and perceives the world along the way, he can only turn into a scientist. The LMU Munich is already waiting. :-D

I have the same feeling that Griffin is a scientist in the way he sees the world and does things. It's wonderful to see this. And you give your kids (and yourself!) so much "input", so much to discover, that's great! And support the other kids too of course (I'm sure you do). Some are more quiet maybe and are enjoying quietly what they see. And everyone has different skills, has different ways to do things. As long as their questions are being answered - or they have the possibility to find out about everything, their mind can unfold to their full potential.

Just a linguistic note ...Every place with "Hall" in the name is a salt place where either salt was mined or processed or traded... "Hall" is the "Old High German" term for "salt" while the term "Salz" is derived from Latin. And "Hall-statt" means literally "Salt-Place/Site" And the historic term "Hallstatt-Culture" is describing a celtic high culture from the late Bronce Age till early Iron Age (12th century till 6th century BC) and was wide spread across Central Europe and it was the predecessor of the following "La Tene Culture" from the 5th till 1st century BC until the ancient Romans came

Interesting. As Dutch person, I was wondering whence the part-word "hall" and my first intuitive thought was to relate "hall" to the "kammer" in "salzkammer". And had forgotten my Greek lessons of 5 decades ago that taught me that "(h)als", genitive "halos" - as in halogen (lightbulbs) - was the old Greek word for salt. Pre and Proto-Celtic - if their descendants still live in Hallstatt, they might be relatives of Irish and Britons (in Bretagne)

As a local tour guide and photographer who works in Hallstatt, I have to say that I love this video ❤️ You mention exactly the aspects that are so important for this small town, showing respect to the locals, staying here more than two hours & learning about the history and culture of Hallstatt, I wish all tourists would be like your family, haha 😄 super excited for part 2 :) Ad: And thx for the correct pronunciation of the town name!

Being a local tour guide myself too, i could ad that the "dream-tourist", if that word is appropriate anyway with regard to Hallstatt, is the one, that stays a few days and enjoys the treasures, natural and cultural ones. And there is so much more to see in that region than "just" Hallstatt.

I think it is also important, when visiting such places, to spend money there, not just take photos or get a post card, but go to the butcher, the bakery and such, so that the residents also profit from your visit. I am all for bringing your own food on trips, but am willing to make an exception where important. Seeing tourists that do not purchase anything, just leave their litter, really hurts.

Yeah we totally agree and mention that later in the video. It's so important to stay at a local pension or gasthof and avoid chains - shop local and eat local.

Loved the video, and your eye for the beauty. If Hallstatt actually needed more tourists this would be a perfect advertisement for them. But even so, I consider this to be a very thought-provoking insight that tourism, while helpful in small doses, can easily and quickly become a burden to the inhabitants of such towns. Your respectful, friendly admonishments to other tourists to not only take an instagramm picture and leave again is sooo welcome. And it also shows how much you've been Europeanized / Germanized in your barely 18 months here. Your open expressions on sustainability and mindful tourism are so on point. /edit: Oh and I have to applaud your continued path of giving your kids amazing memories to look back to once they grow up. I am absolutely certain they will cherish these memories in coming years. /edit 2: That kids make a playground out of anything and everything they see is not just good, it is PERFECT! That's exactly how it should be: kids using, exercising, and expanding their creativity, all the while being physically active, training muscles, muscle memory, equilibrium, hand-eye-coordination, and so much more. Throw in lots of oxygenation, cardio-vascular training, endurance training, the list goes on and on and on. I abso-fricking-lutely love it! Encourage them as much as you can; the day may come where they'd prefer to be couch-potatos, staring at their phones all day long, and it will become a hassle to get them to step outside.

You're attitude twords new things/ares is so refreshing!! One can see that you've traveled and lived abroad before! So nerved by many other vlogs which are "shocked"... Germany has it's faults like all countries but I'm glad to pay for clean drinking water rather than chlorated for free, glad to pay for a clean toilet rather than a dirty one for free. Unrefrigerated eggs cuz they haven't been dunked in poisen. The list goes on and on. Health Care... ect. Grateful I came back to Germany years ago!! Enjoy as you have been!!! Great to hear that not all Americans are the way the USA has been developing the past years.

Forelle ist eins meiner Lieblingsessen. Vielleicht wird Griffin erfreut sein, das zu hören. Egal ob geräuchert zur Brotzeit oder so, wie er sie gegessen hat. Wir haben sie schon oft zuhause selbst gemacht - etwas würzen, grillen, fertig! Im Wald zu spielen ist etwas ganz Wunderbares. Da darf man auch mal dreckig werden.

Until I saw a short documentary about the tourist masses two years ago, I never connected Hallstatt with this kind of stuff. Instead, Hallstadt for me was a time period.

He got the Forelle twice while we were there! It shocked us the first few times. He’s an adventurous eater! Yeah funny you say that about tourists. I told some of my German friends here where we went for Pfingstferien and they said, oh, isn’t it so touristy there? Haha

The salt of Hallstatt had been so important, that it gave its name to a whole epoch: the Hallstatt-Kultur is a phase of the iron age. There are archeological excavations for more than 100 years and it showes that the riches given by the salt had been evenly splited: they found the rmains of people working their whole live in the salt caves burried with gold artefacts. A mindblowing concept for modern economy leaders!

Actually Hallstatt spans the late Bronze and early Iron Age, if we go by the system developed by Reinecke.

if the clothes of the children are dirty,they had their fun,especially because the parents clean everything again. 😊 you do this really great, all these experiences and impressions will always be remembered by your children.I know that also with me,my parents also showed me so europe on vacation.we were rarely e.g. on the beach with the other tourists,especially with my father we inquired and discovered the surroundings. my girlfriend is an archaeologist and years ago I was allowed to go to hallstadt, where she was invited by local archaeologists to Stone Age mountain wine tunnels. it was unbelievable, there were millennia-old ropes and tools, which as if just the "bergman" had gone away briefly in the salt and food leftovers. To be able to touch something with which the last time a person had worked there 6000 years ago was indescribable. but also how hard this work was

Nice to see my favorite part of my home country depicted in this video! Being from Vienna, I try to visit the Salzkammergut as often as possible. It has just this magical combination of mountains, lakes and picturesque villages to make you feel just out of this world. I also highly appreciate your approach to visiting such places as opposed to the hordes of super-loud day-trip tourists, clogging the streets and not spending a cent locally.

During the intro i thought how amazing this must have been for Ella (remembering her wig from earlier videos). Props to Griffin for not only trying what I call "adult food" (rare that a child orders a whole fish and does not have it prepared by a parent), but ordering it multiple times. One of things that stuck out for me were the shots with Kevin in the front, accompanied by just one of the kids. I think the salt mine and other locations in the area could also be great inspirations for Kevin if he wants to play D&D or something similar (I recommend "Kids on bikes", Cthulhu for Halloween or maybe even the German system "Power Plüsch und Plunder", where the player characters are stuffed animals) with the kids (or everyone, don't want to exclude anyone), or at least some of them, again. When children are used it , they love fish (Forelle) at the age of 3, but you have to prepare it exactly bc of the bones, which are dangerous!

Austria is really beautiful. The "Salzkammergut" and "Upper Austria" with the many lakes in particular. Always enjoy going there. Another tip: Germany's southernmost region. The "Oberallgäu" many great bathing opportunities and surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Just imagine, if you lived in Hallstatt before 1895 the village, the lake and the mountains surrounding the lake would very much encompass your entire world.

That was just the date of the first road leading to the village around the lake, which still can be treacherous terrain even today with landslides. But Hallstatt has always been connected to the world by boat, otherwise they could not have gotten rich by selling salt. The railway on the other shore opened in 1877, you still to this day take the small passenger ship between Hallstatt station and the village.

@@ronik24 of course it has been. But it's a big difference if there's a road or if you go by horse and wagon through the mountains. People will have travelled much less and news probably didn't reach Hallstatt very fast.

They also do a "Sound of Music" bus tour in Salzkammergut. I visited the area with an American colleague on a business trip and when she asked our Austrian host/client were the "Sound of Music" sites are located, he immediately knew what she was talking about, whereas I as a German had no idea about the movie. She was flabbergasted that I had never heard of "Sound of Music". Germans have their own Salzkammergut movie from the sixties: "Im weißen Rößl". Tourism.... Fluch und Segen zugleich.

The Sound of Music is much better known in the US than in Austria or Switzerland. Before going on exchange to the US, I hadn't even heard of the movie. In a way it can be compared with today's Bollywood movies featuring Alpine landscapes, but filmed with with Indian actors and with Indian music as a soundtrack. If I'd be mean, I'd call it cultural appropriation! 🙂

As mentioned in a commentary before, the Bäckchen (cheeks) are just another very yummy, but small part of Forelle. It is usually the first thing I eat of a Forelle, because it's just so nice! Oh and with fried trout like this, the skin is actually eatable! Especially when it's fried in butter. So delicious! (Not eatable when the trout is smoked - which is also a very yummy version of trout!) Seeing this dish just made my mouth water! WANT, TOO! Well done Griffin! Great pick! "When you are at foreign places, eat what you can't have every day at home!", my dad used to say. "You never know when you will have the next chance to try a local dish form that region again." 😉

Ah okay, good to know the skin is edible when it's fried, but not when it's smoked! I've told Griffin the comments about eating the cheek - he says he can't wait to order it again and try that! And your dad was smart - eat the local food when you travel. That's half the experience of trying a new place!

Things like decency and respect, as well as genuine interest in the city, region or area I'm visiting are really important and it can't be said and repeated enough these days. It goes without saying that the guest, the customer is king, as a guest I should behave well and not thoughtlessly leave everything I brought with me when I leave the place. Austria has so many beautiful places, landscapes and nature to offer, there is still a lot to discover, especially in culinary terms.

You are very good tourists who really have appreciation for the region, culture and history of a place! :) You are right, the real problem are, first of all, the huge numbers of tourists, and the ones who only pop in and out. Some are really clueless, there were Chinese tourists who think the town is like a museum and the locals are like "actors" who don't actually live there but just pretend and go home to their apartments at night. So some are pretty disrespectufl, just enter gardens, peek into windows etc. Which of course is super annoying for the residents there. Things just have to change, places like Hallstatt or Venice just can't go on like this. That's one thing Corona was good for, in a way.

Ich hab immer Steckerlfisch geliebt als wir im Salzkammergut waren, auch wenn die Gräten nicht so mein Fall waren. Ich weiß zwar nicht ob es Steckerlfisch in Bayern gibt aber mit Erdäpfelsalat ein Genuss meiner Kindheit.

I can empathize with the locals being inundated with so many tourists every day. I also don't like the type of tourist, who is just there to take pics for their Instagram page, and knows or learns nothing about that region. I once was at MoMA in NYC and they have Vincent van Gogh's painting Starry Night in their exhibit. There was a throng of people taking pictures of themselves in front of the painting with hardly a glance at the painting itself, instead of just admiring it quietly. I truly can't stand tourists like that, who make everything about themselves and not the place or the art they're visiting. I've been told, when it's a good time to visit that painting w/o having to fight the crowd and contemplate it quietly and I will do so next time I'm there, so I can enjoy that precious moment.

The whole area is just amazing and so rich in history and tradition, it’s such a postcard motive for a reason. Love the pocket knife for every occasion, you need a good knife in life and really systematic approach. And it seems like Kevin usually carries Ella or her stuff very casually wherever you go. Your approach to parenting and discovering the world around you is wonderful, letting the kids discover and find their own way of doing it while taking them along on the ride. It reminds me of my parents taking us to roman historical museums and all the other I guess nerdy places we had fun at because we grew up with it being interesting and fun. You’re really smart to avoid the touristy area and times, it makes visiting tourist hotspots so much more enjoyable and a lot easier on the locals. I used to live between the Swarowski place and the golden roof in the old town of Innsbruck and it makes you understand why people don’t want tourism, part of why I love strolls at night or really early, you experience the beauty without the mass of people, one upside of the pandemic was getting to discover Austria without the international tourism, it allowed you to visit the places and not feel cramped which usually keeps you from visiting the nearby places everyone thinks about when they find out you live near there. It’s real madness with the busses that let them out for a few pictures and souvenirs and totally annoys you just trying to get anywhere without ending in at least 50 pics, needing twice the time and having to be acrobatic along the way.

Thanks for making this vid Sara eventhough you were on vacation. What a beautiful town that is on my bucket list. Also I researched that one can take the train from Bad Ischl to a station across the lake from Halstatt and take the ferry over instead of the bus directly to Halstatt. Very sustainable and a ride on the lake!

Yeah that’s true - we do see a lot of tourists in our town. But they’re mostly German, riding through on their bicycles. And they shop from local shops and are very respectful.

If you are interested in more saltmines, then you should go to Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria. It's a mine like in Hallstatt. Active, lake in it, slides, railway. But perhaps nearer to where you live. Hall is a old German word for Salz. So every town or village, who has this word in its name have or had something to do with salt. Schwäbisch Hall for example or a site of Stuttgart, called Hallschlag.

I think you are referring to the salt mine in Berchtesgaden. The brine is processed in the saltworks in Bad Reichenhall (the famous "Bad Reichenhaller Markensalz"), but the mine itself is in Berchtesgaden. Mine and saltworks are connected by pipelines since 1817. There are other brine pipelines in the area, some of them are even older: - the 1. bavarian brine pipeline that connected Bad Reichenhall and Traunstein was built 1617-1619 and went out of service in 1912 -the 2. bavarian brine pipeline that connected Bad Reichenhall and Rosenheim was built in 1810 and went out of service in 1958. They placed a 2. String of pipes beside the 1. pipeline up to Hammer (Siegsdorf) where the strings were split. Parts of these old wooden pipelines can still be found. These were the first pipelines that used pumps.

This was so much fun to watch. We’ve been there last summer. It was like watching our video with a strange over voice :) we stayed in Obertraun as well. Great place to relax after a day hiking, strolling thru Hallstatt or nearby cities. Kudos to Griffin we had trout a lot, it’s too good to not eat it again and again. Also the bacon chicken we had :). Looking forward to the Dachstein video, we had fun in the snow in July! Take care!

Nice seeing all that. Part of my family lived and lives at the lake and I did some km away. To be exact there are combustion engines allowed, but besides the commercial boats (ferries, rescue and fishermen) only very few for families living there for ages. And they should mainly be used in emergencies or special cases. My uncle had such a permit.

I was about to write a comment on that, too. Just think of Halle an der Saale, Bad Reichenhall or Schwäbisch Hall. And from there we come to the old coinage of 1 Heller = 1/2 Pfennig. The origin of the word "Hall" is unclear. It has to do with salt and salt trade, that is for sure, but whether it is of Germanic or Celtic origin can not be solved. All the Alpine regions were Celtic, then the Romans came and after their retreat Germanic trives moved in.

If you like picturesque cities with a medieval vibe to them, I highly recommend your visiting Nördlingen (with a trip to the Ofnet Caves and two ruined castles, Burg Hochhaus and Burg Niederhaus - very romantic and not touristy at all) and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, of course. :)

I can definitely recommend Nördlingen too - for three reasons: its city wall is so complete that you can walk around the entire city on that wall; it's home of the bavarian railway museum which is located in an original steam locomotive depot housing very interesting original examples of railway vehicles; Nördlingen is located almost in the middle of the Nördlinger Ries which is an impact crater of a comet that hit the place about 14 million years ago. The central church of Nördlingen is built with stones containing tiny pieces of that comet.

I wonder if you have ever visited towns along the German "romantic road" between Füssen (Neuschwanstein) and Würzburg? I think that is not so far from where you live, and places like Rothenburg or Dinkelsbühl are really awesome, I think your Family would like it there.

Were you able to bring it with you during the tour. I thought I read that backpacks were not allowed. Did they have someplace to store your backpacks during the tour? Also, did you take the Panorama Trail down to the village? Was it a nice trail for the family? Lots of stairs or dirt path? Thank you again!!

Beautiful area of the world. The Giant Ice Cave is very impressive, but for a lot of Americans it would be too exhausting to visit. I agree with your view of tourism, however, what I have found over the years is that very few people are blessed with Germany‘s vacation rules and people only have a very short amount of time to see as much as they can and they may only get one chance to come to Europe. Glad to see that you are adjusting to the local customs!

Especially Americans - they sometimes only get 1-2 trips to Europe in their lifetimes because of how much time they need and the cost.

Griffin should try "Renken" , so they are called in Bavaria, "Felchen" at Lake Constance. "Zander" and "Kretzer" (also called Egli a small perch species with hardly any bones) are my favorite fish. "Pike" like to be called pike larks. I was gobsmacked when I saw in with the whole trout, not just fish sticks. Maybe there is a fish farm near you, or a fisherman at one of the lakes, where you can buy fresh fish (including fillets).🙋‍♂️ Griffin sollte mal "Renken" , so heißen sie in Bayern, "Felchen" am Bodensee, probieren. "Zander" und "Kretzer" (auch Egli genannt eine kleine Barschart mit kaum Gräten) sind meine Lieblingsfische. "Hecht" gern als Hechtklöschen. Ich war baff als ich in mit der ganzen Forelle sah, nicht nur Fischstäbchen. Vielleicht gibt es bei euch in der Nähe eine Fischzucht, oder an einem der Seen einen Fischer, wo ihr Fisch kaufen könnt.

The memories. I have a little, blurred, framed photo on the wall of my "cave" which I took with my first own camera, maybe 1987 when I was seven years old. On it you see my whole family; mother, brother, my aunt and uncle and my two cousins (my father was beside me and took a similar picture), standing in front of the fountain (at minute 5:00). It seems like everything looks still almost the same, exept today the flower tubs are more modern and the green house on the left (the one with the white stripes) was painted light blue back then.

There are two types of cities with "HALL". In the north it means a slope or heap (Halde). (indo-germanic Halla, later Halle) In the south, "HALL" always has something to do with salt production: Salzkammergut. Hall is the indo-germanic (indo-european) term for salt.

Northgerman half-timbered houses have been traced back to the earliest settlements of neolithic tribes by the remains of the rotten timbers in the ground. In modern English "hall" or "hallway" stands for what we call "Flur", the entrance area of a house. And of course lots of stately homes have names like "Hardwick Hall" . The old Germanic "Königshalle" lives on in these names. And the other term may be of Celtic origin and has to do with salt, as you write.

Hello to all, we were in the Salzkammergut a few weeks ago first time. The area is very beautiful and we went to Hallstatt too. But in my opinion all impression you get are actually affected by the Corona restrictions on travelling and vacations. The amount of tourists, even with actually no local restrictions to get into a country lika Austria is less than the years before 2020 Corona conquer the globe.

Yes I do think you’re right - that there are much less tourists now than before the pandemic. But also last year the mayor of Hallstatt cut the tourism in half and allows half the number of tour buses a day, so I think that also helps.

Overtourism is really a problem, my family loves visiting Crete, we went there almost every year always to the same city, Ierapetra. We always went to holiday apartemts and our host is really nice, she knows me from when I wasn't even born, she's like a thrid grandma XD By boat you can tavel from Ierapetra to Crissi, a small island full of little shells. But the small island is so overtourist that we don't go there anymore, tourist from all over Crete travel by bus just to visit the island for one day and after visiting it they go straight back to the bus that takes them back to their all inclusive hotel, they walk all over the promenade of Ierapetra without stopping at any of the little souvinier shops, they don't eat at the local restaurants, they don't even have time for that :/ I think it's sad that they go there and don't even give the locals anything back, a lot of people there depend on the tourists, but if the people only come for such a short time. They miss so much, I don't think they get to try the good local food in their all inclusive hotels :( And they definatly miss the great open market at Saturday where you can buy so many great fruits and other food from the local farmers ^^ But I'm actually glad that other than Crissi, Ierapetra isn't too full of tourists, that way we have the beach almost for ourself xD (Most tourists there are in the huge PetraMara all inclusive hotel... which is crazy, they have a small seperated beach where all of the people from the hotel are, while right next to that the whole beach is super empty, I don't get why they only stay in the "hotel beach space", but I guess they don't know better since they rarly leave the hotel without a bus that drives them to a tourist trap ^^'') Oh, but a really great thing is, since my parents went to Ierapetra each year for over 20 years, they've got a "friendship award" from the city signed by the mayor that thanks them for comming so often and showing their special preference for the place and it's people :D They've even got a package with Oliveoil and stuff like that as a thanks :D

For Griffin: The skin of the Forelle tastes very very good and the BEST "part" of a Forelle is the meat of the ears. They (2) are in the head, near the eyes and are very tiny , they have the size of a pea and you get it with the top of your knife!

Fun fact: due to the astonishingly large finds that were well preserved by the salt, even an archaeological epoch was named after this city, the transition from bronze - to the iron age it is called "the Hallstadt period"! As always a great video. Your down-to-earth attitude makes me happy. Normally I don't like it at all when the children are also shown in videos. With you this is not the case at all. It may also be because I just think your children are great. Personally, I think you will still have a lot to suffer here (just kidding). After your arrival, I feel you have taken up the topic of ecology, recycling and of course the climate twice as much as we locals. I'm curious when you have to go to the first Friday for future demo. Mag sicher auch daran liegen, dass ich eure Kinder einfach toll finde. Ich persönlich glaube Ihr werdet hier noch viel zu leiden haben ( kleiner Scherz ). Das Thema ökologie, wiederverwerten und auch natürlich das Klima haben Sie nach eurer Einreise meinem Gefühl nach doppelt aufgenommen im Vergleich zu uns einheimischen. Thank you! Yeah I never ever force my kids to be on camera or talking to the camera. If they don’t want to be filmed, I don’t film them. The younger three do like to be on camera oftentimes and think it’s fun, but there are times when they are not in the mood and I have a strict personal policy to honor that as this is my channel and my business, not their’s.

I'm a watercolor artist and do a lot of travel sketching. And would love to find a quiet place to sketch---wonder if I would be able to do that. Would be using a city bus line--not a tour bus. And no Instagram.

Just spent a long weekend in the "Eng", one can access via Vorderriß, and we have been controlled by chilled police due to G7, just wondering how it was for you? Moreover maybe there is another YTVid idea for you to film those place where for this example it is an area belonging to Austria, but just accesible (by car) via Germany. There are other areas the other way round, often different rules aplly, maybe thats worth checking out if that could become a vid idea :)

Eh I think salt was never worth more than gold, but the salt *trade* was. Just like margins on gold today are higher than on salt, but we buy a lot more salt than gold on a daily basis.

Lieber Griffin, soweit ich weiß, kann man eine geräucherte Forelle einfach aufklappen, ohne den Kopf abschneiden zu müssen. Ich bin kein großer Fischesser aber geräucherte Forelle oder Makrele sind immer lecker! 😃👍

das war eine Forelle Müllerin, schätze ich, sie wird MEHLiert (daher Müllerin) und dann in der Pfanne gebraten. Aber sie hätten ihm ein Fischmesser geben sollen - ist leichter.

regarding the chain restaurants i just wanted to say that it absolutly blows my mind that there is a starbucks in vienna...IN VIENNA!, and its not even empty.

Yeah I really cringe when I see American tourists walking into a Starbucks in a European city. I’m thinking - you guys!! Starbucks copied its entire concept from European (mainly Italian) coffee houses! You’re in Europe - get coffee at a local coffee ☕️house! It’s way better than Starbucks!

Really nice video! … do I remember a video of your family visiting the saltmine in Bad Reichenhall? Btw: every place in german speaking countries that is called anything with “hall” in it has to do with salt.

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Yes, when I was little my family went on holiday to Bernhaupten (very close to where you live) and it was a day trip for us to Königssee and Bad Reichenhall. (late 70s/early 80s)
