FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: What software do you use to make your videos?
A: I use Windows Live Movie Maker to create my animations.
Q: What camera do you use?
A: The camera I use is a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
Q: What software do you use to edit your videos?
A: All effects are done manually without the use of editing. I occasionally use Photoshop to do minor things such as color correcting certain frames.
Q: How many Frames Per Second do you use?
A: Most of my stop motions run at 0.09 - 0.06 seconds per frame.
Q: What music is in the video?
A: Music: Halo "" by Martin O'Donnell
Q: Where do you get your sound effects?
A: Here's a link to Sergeant Major Avery Johnson's Channel. He takes sound effects directly from the Halo games, so all the sounds are authentic! / channel
Q: How do you get figures to walk?
A: I frequently use an adhesive material called "sticky tack" whenever I am positioning a figure to walk or when I'm having trouble balancing it.
Q: How did you get so good? How do I improve?
A: The ONLY way to improve your stop motions is to continue practicing. I've been doing stop motions (off and on, mostly off) for about 3 years to get to my current capabilities.
Here (below) are a few key beginner mistakes and fixes.
1a. Light flicker - individual images' lighting doesn't match perfectly, therefore, when the pictures are played quickly together, it appears as though the stop motion is flickering.
2a. How to fix the issue:
- Close off all sources of light (especially natural light from the sun).
- Position a lamp pointing onto your stop motion set.
- Added benefit -- Lighting is a principle element of composing intriguing stop motions.
1b. Unnecessary or unwanted camera movements that cause the stop motion to appear as if it is violently shaking.
2b. How to fix the issue:
- Use a tripod to hold your capture device. A tripod also enables you to position your camera from (almost) any angle.
- If not a tripod, then tape your camera into place
- If not tape, then use a form of sticky tack or similar substance.(tape/sticky tack may damage or leave residue on certain surfaces, use your personal discretion to decide if it is necessary).
1c. Not implementing properties of physics - To make a stop motion appear real, you'll have to apply the concepts of real life to it.
2c. How to fix the issue:
- You don't need a Master's Degree in physics.
- Understand that objects accelerate and decelerate (in stop motion, this is occasionally referred to as "easy-in and easy-out)".
- An object moving slow requires MORE images and as it moves faster (hence accelerates) it needs LESS pictures. When the entity comes to a stop, slowly take more and more images until it is no longer moving.
- This is unrelated to acceleration and deceleration, but figures shouldn't perform an action that requires force without some sort of
prior action to prepare for it. For instance, if a figure jumps it shouldn't simply propel forward. First, it must bend its knees and then swing its arms backwards in order to prepare to thrust itself into the air.
If you have any other questions and things of that nature, please leave a comment below! :D

Pardon me for getting philosophical here, but that last quote really does say a lot. A lot of people don't understand that one doesn't automatically become good at something. You really do have to accept the fact that your starting animations may not look beautiful at the start, and keep moving forward to better improve yourself. My very first animation that I made when I was 10 was practically a slideshow, but my passion to visually express my imagination kept me going, even though it was horrendously choppy. I am aware that many of you don't like to hear that you have to "Practice and Experiment" in order to become professional, but it's SO true. Thank you for sharing this! It's really cool to see that even the best of people have to start somewhere. alright, I'll shut up now... ._.

I agree my stop-motions aren't looking so good right now part of it is my software sucks but another part is I need to practice most peoples stop-motions. I see when they start are to slow but mine are to fast.

well I'm just starting out and as I work I learn more and more on how these things work and I really have come to enjoy it. I subscribe to anyone who halo stop motions and tries even if it's not that good because maybe that will encourage them to push forward and make great animations. I learned from you all for years, and now I've started my own stuff.

Even though these are older they're still really good and they show you have a really good base (I know I've said this before but I'll say it again) you're movement is really nice for all the figures, it's obvious you pay attention to how the characters (especially the covenant) move - and it makes the animation much more believable and enjoyable to watch!

It looks like even back then, it seem you already have the knack to be a great stop motion creator. Skills that is way up above than a regular newbie starting out. What more if you have access to more resources other than Windows Movie Maker, lets say perhaps a high end editing software, props and sfx I'd say youd be a beast! Nonetheless I thank you, because of you I was exposed to creating stop motion video in more practical ways. Awesome work and Cheers!
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nani! I can see improvements in your stop motions. Just keep practicing. Throughout these stop motions, I would almost always set out with a goal in mind. Such as trying to stop my camera from being shaky (usually failed), attempting to do odd movements with the figures, flashing effects, and more. The point is that you should examine what needs fixing, then decide to put the majority of your effort into fixing that. As for new software... I happened to have recently invested in DragonFrame. I haven't had the opportunity to use it lately, though. The program is a above my actual requirements, since many of the features are geared toward professional stop motion animators. My next goal is to find a way to make my stop motions more visually appealing, such as building larger terrain areas, more elaborate lighting, and better cinematography. My current impediment is that my table isn't large enough for the things I want to do, and the I've run out of pieces to keep building my scenery larger. Have a great (insert time)! -Dawson

In order to improve you have to first realize your mistakes. Most days I'd sit down and try to specifically fix an issue. For example, one day I'd work to stop light flicker. I researched why it happens, and also had to observe on my own in order to find ways to reduce it. Another thing I put much emphasis on was keeping my camera from shaking. It wasn't easy, but I've eventually learned how to keep it still. Isn't there some saying along the lines of "work smart, not hard"? Well I think that applies to practicing stop motions! :D -Dawson

What are you doing for college? Is it related to your stop motions in any way?
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Master Ekin! The answer is no, I am not going to college to pursue Animation as a career. I'm currently fulfilling the requirements for an associate degree in science, from there I'm presumably going to seek a higher degree somewhere in the realm of science, but I'm not sure yet... There are so many options it's arduous to say "that's what I want to spend the rest of my life doing". Being a stop motion animator as a job would be a dream come true, but I'm uncertain of if I'd be able to make it work out. Take care! -Dawson

It's not about the size of your brain, it's about the connections between your neurons that are in your brain... Well, I think. Don't quote me on that. After all, that's my brain telling me that. :P

That stop motion was actually from about 2013, which was before I had any understanding of stop motions. The point of this video was just to show how I've improved over the years, and to show that anyone can achieve their goals if they put the effort into it. :) -Dawson

how long have you been making stop motions? and not how long you have been posting them!
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron! One of my first ever stop motions was around 2010 or early 2011. I tried to make stop motions every once in a great while during 2013, but ultimately gave up. In late 2014 I decided to start practicing stop motions much more frequently. The majority of these stop motions chronicle my journey of learning during the 2014 through 2015 phase. In essence, I've only been serious about learning stop motions since 2014. Though, I had once created a few stop motions back in 2011. Let me know if that answered your question! -Dawson

You answered my question! What stop motion software did you use when you became to start stop motions?
@AxiologyStudios

I started with Windows Live Movie Maker and still use it. The software is exceptionally simple, but gets the job done. :)
