I see it as a matter of identity. The helmets main function is for protection and provide a HUD. Never taking a helmet off shows that the spartan is a soldier first and human second. They are made to be weapons.

@@joshbolt1364I think your both right, their training is so deep in their bones that I only recall Master Cheif only once take his helmet off (in the halo books when hes fighting the Flood and Covenant to find Captain Keyes) and that was just to eat a protein bar and a brief wound fixing. But I definitely agree that they are rebelling against that very same training when they are dying to be able to feel like the billions of fellow humans who they fought both with and for.............I'd love to be a Spartan-II (maybe a S-III or S-IV fir the survival rate of augmentation)

Thats kind of poetic that when, at least with Six, he took off his helmet in that last cutscene to feel human again. His cold killer exterior was destroyed, so he took it off to fight like a passionate human.

In “The Flood” it’s eluded to when he was meeting with a commander that Master Chief felt more comfortable in full armor as he felt incomplete outside of it. In the books, we learn that John actually did take his armor off and showered up between missions, I love the books because it gives us more insight to their life on Installation 04, and that it wasn't just constant move from one place to another with minimal rest while fighting to get a way out of that situation Edit: also I'm pretty sure Master Chief's reason for not showing his face ever is to complete the immersion and allow us the player to feel like we are the chief

I think part of the reason is for humanity, it makes the spartans seem like they are truly our last line of defense, they aren't human like us they're humanity's protection. That is what Halsey wanted.
@FutureOfHalo
@FutureOfHalo Жыл бұрын
Some of them felt naked without their helmets and/or armor so they never removed them. Others removed their helmets if there were only other Spartans around or Dr Halsey. From what I can remember in the Halo Reach game that is the only time any of Noble removed their helmets. One of those things in the games that's so subtle that most people don't even notice.

@bananananananabatman8999
@bananananananabatman8999 Жыл бұрын
They were almost dogmatic about it as well, if they were in a combat zone they would refuse orders to remove their helmet if they didn’t report directly to that officer. And they spent so much time in combat that that meant they were pretty much always in full gear. (not that they could have taken much else off, it takes specialized equipment to do that) To the point where they came up with special hand signs to indicate facial expressions so they could emote to each other reliably, they even used the hand signs when out of armor because they were more comfortable with that then actually smiling. As much as the spartan IIs were killing machines and “perfect soldiers” they were basically family, and ended up being more loyal to each other then the UNSC, as seen in halo 5. Side note, the fight between chief and lock pissed me off in real time, what dumbass thought a Spartan FUCKING FOUR could go toe to toe with ANY 2 let alone the fucking guy who’s dealt with MULTIPLE UNIVERSE THREATS. For the unaware, the chief and blue team are so heavily genetically modified they could rip car doors off and run 50 kilometers an hour without armor, to say nothing of the training that was so rigorous and cruel, the immensely corrupt and nigh tyrannical UNSC didn’t want to sign off on the program and ONI did it illegally… er, more illegally then it would have been if sanctioned. To compare, let’s look at the spartan 3s, one of which you play in the fire fight missions in 4. They are volunteers from the regular infantry, only slightly modified, given a much less powerful version of the armor the 2s had, and had just the regular basic training and then a few more months of training after that, then sent in the hundreds to important objectives to deal with a problem a team of four spartan 2s could deal with, and most would die. The spartan 4s however, weren’t even modified beyond some steroids and some meds to make them more obedient. The armor is only a little bit weaker then the spartan 3s but is still much worse then the mark V armor blue team has. Lock would have had his head caved in like a egg if chief punched him full force, and it would have been so fast he probably would have only had enough time to register it was happening before his insides became outsides. Spartan 2s in armor can _throw_ cars and punch holes in reinforced concrete walls big enough to walk through. Oh and elites are about as strong as a 2 as well, so no shot of lock overpowered one, also bull.
@xander.357
@xander.357 Жыл бұрын
@bananananananabatman8999 the 4s augmentation process was not just some steroids. In the book New Blood, Buck literally states that they remove and replace all of your orgins with synthetic ones with the exception of the brain, strength and lengthen their bones and rebalance their anabolic chemicals and immune systems to make them immune to almost all toxins. In another book Buck states that if he drank a glass of poison it probably wouldn't hurt him. Having said that I agree that a 2 should crush a 4 but when you consider the idiotic choice 343 made to put 117 In a suit of ge2 mjolnir (the suits were designed to cap the power multiplier at the level of a spartan 2 so that the 4s were on par with their strength) you have an explanation why the fight was so close...a stupid explanation but an explanation all the same..

In lore, removing a Spartans' helmet also renders their energy shielding and most of their armors systems and augmentations useless since they all connect to the UNSC neural lace implanted in all UNSC personel. So that's the explanation as to why they're trained especially to never remove it in a combat zone, or anywhere that isn't 100% safe enough to do so, like a ship, or friendly base. Some Spartans however, may remove their helmets in situations where it might not be 100% safe, perhaps as a brief respite from the tight space of a helmet, or to better connect with their fire team (in noble teams case imo, to rest and to connect with teammates/show vulnerability and emotion to them) And some Spartans are on the other side of that spectrum and never remove it, maybe as a purely tactical reason, or a psychological one, as they feel more threatening and maybe even "safe" hidden behind the helmet and having all their armors capabilities within a split second notice

I feel like not seeing some Spartan faces make them more memorable and intimidating. With Master Chief, Noble 6, and Emile they all feel stronger and more lethal compared to those who remove their helmet. I would be more scared of a spartan with a helmet on because they feel mysterious and you don’t know what to expect from them. While with a helmet they feel more human and less war crimes be damned. With a helmet on they feel combat ready in every moment. I mean the time it takes to put on a helmet might not be a lot, but sometimes that sliver of time is needed.

@BigDaddyGAO
@BigDaddyGAO Жыл бұрын
Spartan 4s never got the indoctrination and singleminded training that made the 2s and 3s so deadly. The 2s were the most successful as they were all hand pick and trained the longest. The 3s were not nearly as selective and well trained since they were meant to go on impossible suicide missions. The 4s were just normal people with augmentation, and this led to the least lethal and most prone to defect batch of Spartans.
@ahumanperson231
@ahumanperson231 Жыл бұрын
@@BigDaddyGAO true, however, Spartans weren't the only ones trained to keep there protective gear on in combat zones, as it is irl, soldiers are expected to keep all protective gear on when in any engagement until they are in a "safe" space, palmer was not in a safe space as there were enemies literally right outside the door trying to break through, it became a safe space once chief cleared it, but she walks out with her helmet off, so while yes spartan 4s were not as trained as previous generations, I'd assume that they must have been trained at some point to not take off there protective gear in an active warzone

@ahumanperson231 343 will never do this because they went so far as to give the Spartans their own military branch, but it would be good storytelling to have the 4s suffer from an immortality complex. Like seriously, imagine working up from the back-breaking, soul crushing training to become and ODST, and then be chosen to become a SPARTAN (soldiers who most of time you've only heard about before they became more common w/the 4s). For jorge it may have been a way for his humanity to be put on display one last time because he was the most "human". Emile is seen the grim reaper so no need to take off his helmet, six was the literal grim reaper his kill count was his personality, for kat her taking off her helmet didnt really show any of her personality but it did show that these demigods are killable and in the right circumstances as easy to kill as a marine and i honestly got nothing for june he didnt really have any personality traits in reach except for excellent choices in when to leave

In the Bungie Trilogy and Reach specifically, it was to not only push that Mystery Factor, but also so the player can superimpose his face onto The Master Chief or their face on to Noble 6. This would connect them to the character more as the character and the player could be seen as the same individual, increasing enjoyment and sense of accomplishment.

In the book's particular to Spartan 2s due to the augmentations done a lot of them had very bad scarring and or cybernetics that would freak people out so they kept the helmets on unless only around other Spartans and a few trusted other people they consider family basically. For instance the sergeant that trained them the captain from the autumn and doctor Halsey all the Spartans after augmentation without their helmets.

To the Spartans their armor is like a second skin, it feels "wrong" to them when they dont have their helmets on. It’s also a great way to make the player feel like they’re more connected to the character. The mystery behind the character allows for the player to better imagine themselves in the Spartan’s place. Another key feature of older halo games is that many of the BA things that Chief does is done while the player is playing the game, followed by a cutscene showcasing what the player just completed.

I believe the Spartans remove the helmet to show they're not doing this because he is a Spartan but because of their own decision and emotion. This shows the Spartans character and that they're still human. A lot of Halo theme is self-sacrifice and adding this touch really hits hard. "And for one last instant, I'm human again." -Sergeant ghost last words
