In this video I show you how to improve the performance of your handheld radios. It's very simple and will work with all radio brands.

@@goosecouple If your multimeter isn't working, open it up and there is a small LR44 button cell battery. Replace that and your meter will probably work again.

I just watched an HT range test where this almost doubled the signal strength at the receiver. Why don’t antenna companies offer this? It’s like sorcery!

@@theorlandoprepper Thank you. Know I’m down the rabbit hole of learning about these “radials.” From what I’ve learned so far, about a dozen of them evenly spaced facing 45 degrees downwards with thick gauge wire should be optimal. Performance gains by adding more start falling off sharply after that. That would make for one heck of a thumbnail! Part 2 video?

😲 OMG That's bad ass young man thanks for the tip. So do I put in a frequency of what my handheld ham radio works at like 136 MHz two 520 MHz on that calculator or do I use the antennas size which I have is a TID 771. 144/430 MHz and then put in the calculator the low megahertz in the high megahertz but regardless either way what do I do after having the high and low that was a badass show thanks for the tip. Or do I just pick the high number cut the wire and just go with the flow and it is what it is and I should be able to get out further and receive better

Whatever your primary frequency is, is what you put into the calculator.

I have yet to find a video where someone has demonstrated how to make a counterpoise where they include before and after demonstration of the effectiveness of the 'rat tail'. Do you have such a video. I'm very interested. Thank you!

No, I do not. Like I said in the video, it may work or it may not, but it doesn't harm the signal if you do add it. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for getting back so fast. If I could ask one more question and I'll leave you alone and again thank you so much for your help. So if I make a counterpoise and cut it to length for 520 MHz can I leave it on there and go to 144 megahertz or will that mess up my radio or even maybe ruin the radio all together thank you

would like to see the difference in the field.. normally, the body is the counterpoise,and so, i don't believe that a wire added will give a better communication..

Have you tried the longer counterpoise for 2 Meters? I would expect it would make a greater difference at the longer wavelength as the radio body is closer to the size of 70 CM wavelength.
@theorlandoprepper

The calculator I linked in the description tells you how long to make your counterpoise for each frequency. I made mine for my primary frequency, 444.075.

So is the length of what each frequency is just good for what u made it for or can i use it the cat tail for the whole 70cm or 2m?
@theorlandoprepper
@theorlandoprepper 4 ай бұрын
Use the calculator in the description box above to determine the length needed for your main frequency. It should help with the other frequencies as well, but you want your go-to channel to be the one that the counterpoise is tuned to.
