Blankenese is a district of Hamburg with 13,700 inhabitants, in the west of the city. The station was opened in 1867 and is located on the Altona - Blankenese and Blankenese - Wedel railway lines. Originally only today's tracks 2 and 3 were available for passenger traffic. Today's track 1 was only added in 1907, when the line to Blankenese was electrified for the Hamburg-Altonaer city and suburban railway. No 3rd rails were used, but an overhead line with a voltage of 6.3kv 25hz. A year later, operations began with the new electric multiple units, which already ran every 10 minutes. This corresponds to the current clock rate of the S1 outside the rush hours. The line to Wedel, which opened in 1883, was initially served by steam locomotives. This was only to change when the Deutsche Reichsbahn decided in the 1930s to convert the Hamburg suburban railways into S-Bahn trains based on the Berlin model. The route between Altona and Blankenese was equipped with a 1200V 3rd rail in 1940. Due to the effects of the Second World War, the route to Wedel only followed in two stages in 1950 (to Sülldorf) and 1954. Since then, only the Hamburg S-Bahn has been used for passenger traffic. The last freight trains ran in 1997. There are now residential buildings on the site of the former freight station. The platforms were shortened during renovations and originally reached up to the station exit signals. To the west of the platforms there is a parking facility with two tracks. The reception building from 1867 was last completely renovated in 2007. Due to various elevations of the surrounding terrain, the first floor of the building became essentially the ground floor over time. The station's signals and switches are still controlled today by the electromechanical signal box, which was put into operation in 1927.
