This is the 4th etude from his set of 12 etudes in minor keys. This etude is mainly transcribed with theme and style from Alkan's Grande Etude op. 76 no. 3, Rondo Toccata (hands-reunited) for right hand and Etude op. 39 no 7, Symphony for Piano Solo: Finale for left hand. But, there are some variations included (a little from Le Festin d'Esope).

This is so big masterpiece! Hamelin made one piece from Alkan's Symphony for solo piano, Rondo Toccata, Le Festin d'Esope and a little Alkan's Ouverte. And he even some Alkan's typical techniques from his other pieces!

Some peole would disregard this type of compositional technique as an abomination of the original works, but it also takes an original mind to make a piece like this work. I suppose Hamelin was influenced by Godowsky's Studies on Chopin's Etudes when he combined all these parts of Alkan's music. I enjoyed it!

Alkan and Chopin live in the same building complex and i dont find it unusual that they would listen in on each others playing and get new ideas from each other. for example the FF section at 1:11 to 1:20 and FFF section at 2:34 are very similar to etude op 10/4 Con Fuoco section. its a shame Alkan is just being recoginized he really wrote some extraodinary concepts

Well it's not a complicated piece, many people would be able to play it. But to play it at this speed requires the technical fortitude talent of Hamelin which, of course, only Hamelin himself possesses. Who else could possibly maintain those crazy octaves at that speed for 4 minutes without losing all feeling in the left hand?

@afertyus1000 - Actually, the run that begins at 1:41 (and other places) does give quite the impression that it is a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) recording.

@afertyus1000 - It means that the notes are recorded to a computer-playable file format. This, however, does not mean that it does not accurately reproduce the feeling of the original composer on playback. If the recording was done with high enough resolution and the piano samples used to reproduce the sound are high enough quality, you will get VERY close to the original. This in fact may be an original recording. If not, in my opinion, everything is in high enough quality that it will pass.

@coryswaycool not sure about 2:21 but there are many alkan themes in here. 0:06 the symphony finale op.39/4, always accompanying. 0:12 in the right hand the grand etude op. 76 these two are the most prominent themes the piece is built around. 1:14 Festin d'Esope op. 39/12 1:43 again grand etude, is this called the recapitulation? it's a small center of peace in the storm. 2:21 ?? and probably others i've missed!

You can't really comprehend the musical genius behind Hamelin's arrangement of this until you start learning how to play it. I've caught little subtleties in this piece while learning it I didn't catch when I just listened to it. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever attempted learning. Haha.
