Ben Schaeffer I’ve always wondered how many Amherst kids take courses at Hampshire?

Mick Funny You know, honestly, I don’t know what it’s like now, BUT, when I was attending Hampshire and took Amherst classes, there were plenty of Hampshire students in Amherst classes, but you could count on one hand the number of Amherst students taking Hampshire courses. I attended in the early to mid-90’s, so back then, Amherst was MUCH more “preppy” and “traditional” then it is now. In fact, there were still fraternities (off-campus of course) that were a part of life at Amherst, although the college officially banned all fraternities and sororities in 1984, I believe. Anyway, Amherst students used to characterize Hampshire as “that freaky college down the road” 😂 Amherst, back when I knew it, was DEFINITELY what you would think of when you imagine a “traditional, preppy, New England Liberal Arts College.” Everything Hampshire WASN’T. Amherst would NOT have been a fit for me socially, although academically, I actually enjoyed the classes I took. However, when you take classes in the arts at pretty much ANY school, it’s going to be different than the rest of the curriculum. Amherst was the same in that regard. It had “artsy” students, but not like Hampshire did. Hampshire was a college FOR the arts (where you could actually create your own original work and build a portfolio and own your independence with what you were studying and you as the student directed the level of faculty involvement you wanted with your work), whereas, Amherst incorporated the arts into its overall liberal arts curriculum. It’s difficult to explain, but I think you get where I’m coming from. The two schools were geographically close, but I’ve never seen two colleges that were more DIFFERENT. Hampshire and Smith have more in common oddly enough, and Amherst & Mt. Holyoke are basically sister schools. UMass is kind of it’s own entity, being so large. I enjoyed taking classes at all the campuses, because it augmented the resources Hampshire offered, plus it’s good for social and cultural reasons too. Each of the colleges is pretty small compared to the University, and Hampshire is the tiniest of all the campuses (sometimes it felt TOO SMALL), so I enjoyed the variety.

Its one of the harder colleges to get into but even average smart people can get in, they just set higher expectations if your smarter.
