We all know the Whitsundays is a tourist hot spot, and the crown jewel of this region in terms of accommodation and activites as a destination Hamilton Island is among the top spots to visit... This is what it was like back when we had TAA and ANSETT flying around along with QANTAS..
I found this video while working on Hamilton Island a couple of years ago, and have just recently found it again, this went to air on the SEVEN NETWORK at some stage in 1984 and therefore though remaining property of the original producers and so on, it also falls into the section of being able to be posted on this site, until further advised.
It shows some of the development of Hamilton Island into what it is today.
I am sorry, the picture comes and goes... its done from an old VHS track.

I worked and lived there between 2015-19 at Hamilton Island Air. Spectacular island, endless activities and beautiful scenery. Island paradise in the GBR! Avoid going during summertime, otherwise it’s heaven on Earth.

walkabout1094 Fully agree, he did so much for QLD and Queenslanders. His problem was the left hated him, and the right did as well as soon as as they realised how popular he was. Remember the “Joh for PM” campaign? We had massive corruption in ALP controlled Victoria, SA and WA. Tricontinental, State Bank, Pyramid. But it was Joh they went after.....

I lived and worked on Hamilton Island post Keith Williams, and I can say unreservedly that Williams was an ecological criminal.. His 1st crime at Hamilton Island was to rip out and bulldoze Catseye beach's mangroves. (any person that knows fish will tell you the mangroves are the nursery for many many fish species), then once it was all ripped out he took his Samson Barge loaded with his bulldozer and went to the National Park and sacred Aboriginal burial ground and the only beach that can be seen from space because of its 100% white sand silica beach on Whitsunday Island. he then loaded the barge many times over with this unique white sand and took it back to cover the scar of the now dead mangroves, until his beach was created. He also took his earth moving equipment down to a little known area of Hamilton Island called "Coral Cove", where he destroyed a MASSIVE midden of shells (A midden is a large pile of shells oysters etc left by aboriginals after hundreds of years of harvesting the seafood and discarding the shell onto the midden) It is also absolute evidence of aboriginal habitation and therefore able to be contested as aboriginal sacred land... Once Williams had flattened the centuries of evidence he put soil over the top and planted grass... Many people know of his actions in destroying sensitive habitats like the sea grass beds that are so essential for the survival of species such as the dugong... Then there were the herd of dear he let loose on the Island for the purpose of hunting... Australia has NO native cloven hoof animals, cloven hooved animals always walk the same path, leading to a cut in the ground which becomes erosion... Williams had a blatant disregard for anything that got in his way of his accumulation of wealth... His arrogance could be seen in what was used as the radio call sign for his to motor yachts the Achilles 1 & 2.... being "GOD 1" & GOD 2"....

Much like Donald Trump and Clive Palmer … you know why he robbed the other islands of sand?? The fine imposed by the government was considerably less than the price of mined sand, being that it didn’t matter if it was 1 cubic foot or 1,000,000 cubic feet the fine was the same value… he would have paid roughly 1/10th the value of mined sand in fines. Not to mention he opened up access to the reef where as you can see terrorists (tourists) have beef destroying that ever since, guided reef walks, diesel fuel pollution, sunscreen/zinc pollution, discarded food scraps… the dolphins that he moved from SeaWorld up to the enclosure and the ones that were kept in the pools all died of stress.. but nothing gets in the way of 💰

@@floisy I was there when Speedy and Buttons (Mother & son) were living in that puddle outside the James Cook bar. It was always heartbreaking to see them in such a tiny tiny amount of water. no protection from sun, knowing that they would not be able to use their sounding because it would just bounce around their concrete prison... When they moved them to Seaworld it was a small mercy given them. Speedy was born in captivity and never got to know the freedom of a deep ocean or the security and joy of being the part of a pod.. Of course they died of stress, I would hazard the guess that all cetaceans imprisoned by these monsters would eventually die of stress. (you only need to look at the dorsal fin of an orca to see they are depressed and stressed... Yes I absolutely agree that humanity is to blame, we are the ones that create the demand by patronizing these prisons for our entertainment.. (The last zoo I went to was 30 years ago, I went to Toronga with my then girlfriend, I lasted less than 10 minutes, I left with tears streaming down my face. a cage is a cage, no matter how pretty you make it... Thank you for your reply and input, Its nice to know we are not alone in our guilt and sadness for what humanity does to the amazing creatures we "share" this little blue dot with.
