Fun fact, Lin Manuel Miranda HIMSELF admitted that he's not an actor and his strengths lie in lyric writing.

In the compendium book Lin-Manuel talks about how he pretty much turned in a different performance every night. With a lot of the other actors there's points where the physical demands of the performance sort of override the acting, and it never did with Jackson IMO. Incredible talent.

I thought Lin's performance was intentionally breathless. He's trying to say as much as he possibly can before he has to breath. Like the character Hamilton, trying to say as much he possibly can before running out of time. This happens especially at the beginning of the show when Hamilton is young, brash, and excited about being in the middle of a revolution. You can hear his rap become more composed throughout the end of act 1 and beginning of act 2 when he needs to compromise with Jefferson and Madison. His rap is much stronger thru songs where he isn't hamilton level passionate about the topic. He still gets borderline hysterical on some topics which comes thru in his raps where he becomes breathless again until its quiet uptown when we get an emotionally exhausted and broken hamilton whos like... fuck it. So that is my essay where I thought lin's weaker performance was used for the character

Yea. I think it was fully intentional. He’s an bastard orphan coming from a rough life and entering an entirely new one. He’s nervous and breathless and isn’t the best. He’s trying desperately to prove himself and make a carreer and learning the ropes. He’s not supposed to be a complete master of words though once he gets his polish, he’s no longer struggling while moving through the ropes of politics and now leaps through them with ease and mastery.

One thing I found interesting is that my friends who HATE musicals with a burning passion, loved Hamilton because it was non-stop singing. Obviously Lin isn't the greatest singer or dancer. But I still feel like he has a distinct and interesting voice and the way he acts through his singing is solid. MJVD G MJVD G exactly, thats exactly why i dislike Theatre Kids (not all, but obnoxious stereotypical ones) act like they know all about the american revolution because they listened to Hamilton, i was almost like that in 6th-7th grade, and i grew out of that phase and I’m glad i did before i got to US History. Ive met people who thought that Philip Hamilton was an Only Child and that Angelica, Eliza and Peggy were the only Schuyler kids, and when i ask them why they think that, they source Hamilton. I love Hamilton, and its partially what made me so interested in history, but i dont say that i know US History and just credit Hamilton. You can like the idea of Hamilton Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton Alexander Hamilton dating, or that Hamilton Thomas Jefferson is trans and has a miku binder, but dont romanticize the brutality of the war, the slavery, the affair or the revolutions because you like the musical.

@@unhingedpenguin4870 Idk - I've been peeking in over the last month or so, and honestly, from the way people were talking about it, I'd expected it to be hell. And it really wasn't. That phenomenon where the people who love the show most feel the need to constantly distance themselves from "those weird fans, I'm not like THEM" annoyed me much more than people shipping Jamilton. I've been on the Internet before you know. It needs more than a vaguely controversial ship to faze me. And there wasn't much more, from what I've seen. The insaner parts (like the fanart in this video) are being called out by literally everybody and, from my limited experience... are not a good characterization of the fandom as a whole. I'd join you all, but honestly - I don't have the energy to be in a fandom that gets so much shit from everyone. It's tiring.

I recently made an Account on Hamilton Amino and the fandom was so welcoming. The majority are so nice and I haven’t met a single toxic fan yet. And in days they grew to be kind of like a family. I feel so appreciated in the Hamilton fandom because people like my art and are nice. And now we are often doing video calls and playing Minecraft. I mean, if I hadn't looked deeper into the fandom, I'd never have discovered nonbinary Lafayette, can you imagine that?? No but seriously. The fandom is cool. “Is Hamilton on Disney+ Good, or Nah?” Yes. Next question. In all seriousness, yes. I enjoyed it immensely. It enhanced the story for me to be able to see the actors’ emotions and the way the characters are interacting. Not to mention, a live performance is the way Lin Miranda always intended it to be experienced, and this is the closest many of us can get to that, especially now that the original cast has long since moved on to other things. Plus, the album doesn’t contain “Tomorrow There’ll Be More Of Us” and that scene is incredible, it pretty much defines the end of Act 1 all on its own.

Non stops just a quick time skip so you have info for “what did I miss” which gives a very strong entrance with a key character that defines part 2 and the plot being intoduced and it’s kinda a welcoming song not only for the character but the audience as well.

About Lin's performance. While I was watching the mastershot on Disney + I noticed that Lin's performance as Hamilton actually gets livelier as Act 1 continues. With every song he speak/sings/acts with more enthusiasm than the last until it caps at Non-Stop and he's golden throughout Act 2. This could be attributed to one of two things. Either Lin is slowly overcoming stage fright as the play continues, or it's a subtle form of character development. The scholar that Alexander Hamilton's character was, let's not forget that prior to My Shot he'd "never had a group of friends before." With limited interaction with his late family members and likely very few genuine conversations if any, it makes sense that Hamilton at the beginning of the play would seem somewhat awkward or socially stunted in some way, despite being one of the most articulate characters in the production.

The good things that came from the Hamilton fandom (yes they exist): - Introduction to musical theatre - Introduction to history - People covering songs - People making artwork/animatics of the show so the people who couldn't see it live could have a visual medium to go along with it (some of which I think were a little better than the show due to the limitations of a live performance compared to artwork) - Creating jobs for POC and giving them a spotlight in a white dominated industry (thank you to people in the replies for pointing this out.) The bad: - That image - The circumstances/fandom culture that lead to that image - People who are unable to separate reality and fiction really rearing their heads - people harassing artists to make more Hamilton content to the point of completely divorcing themselves from the musical (GalactiBun ring any bells? My heart goes out to them) EDIT: I know it's not historically accurate. That's why I said "introduction". If someone likes the musical, it could push them to want to learn more. Even if the person just wants to know more about the musical itself, they'll quickly realize it's only loosely based on Chernow's biography if they didn't know that already.

The thing about Lin's performance that leads me to disagree with you about the beginning of the play is that Lin's performance seems to map to Hamilton's personal arc. In his first couple of songs he seems a little meek and unsure of himself but ready to play out his hand. As he matures through the end of act 1 his performance grows as Hamilton the character gains confidence and resolution, and he emerges in act 2 as a fully formed character giving his strongest performance.

Ngl when Hamilton first came out, I really didn't get the hype. And this is coming from someone who loves musicals, from both an audience perspective and as a frequent pit musician. I actually quickly got annoyed with how popular Hamilton had become, and was particularly irritated by the fanbase. It all just seemed so grating. Fast forward to 2019 when the hype had largely died down, I actually went to see the show in the West End (because the ticket prices were no longer totally extortionate) and I loved it! It's such a well-crafted show and I can't believe I missed out on it for so long. Still hate the fanbase though.

I think one of the biggest problems with modern day fandoms is that the "newcomers", so to speak, are in a vast majority, pretty young (11-15) and these people can't recognize the divide between fiction and reality. The big majority of people in fandoms don't recognize that enjoying something portrayed in a book, show or movie doesn't mean that the person who consumed or created the content approves of said content. And it's fucking sad. (And not just Hamilton, fandoms in general.) Edit: Spelling
@silversunset
@silversunset 4 жыл бұрын
M Matute Exactly. I’m in my teens and joined the fandom in early 2018, so I was in the demographic you stated. As I got older, I kind of wanted to distance myself from the “fandom” which I view subjectively as “immature” now (because of the shipping, and what not, and the younger fans). I enjoy Hamilton for, not only for the music (which is amazing to say the least), but also the musical as an art form. It has really inspired me in so many ways; in art because of animatics, music, costumes, *history,* and other subjects. And although I love the musical, it doesn’t mean I approve the of the real life Hamilton. I understand that the Hamilton in the musical is just a character and not equivalent to the real life inspiration. I hate when people compare these two things when they aren’t meant to be accurate representations in the first place. I had the same problem with The Greatest Showman. I like the movie and music, and the characters and story are intriguing, but it doesn’t mean I support irl PT Barnum and his exploitation of people.

Some people seem to forget that people can be good and bad at the same time, and that they should both be acknowledged and recognized. Hamilton not only was entertaining and provided great opportunities for PoC on Broadway, but presented a fictionalized, fun story that included good parts of the founding fathers to make it an inspiring musical and get people interested in history. It doesn’t have to be historically accurate and it never claimed to be

I really like it, especially because I'm a huge history need. It was so fun to see these historical figures in a different light, and it really got me interested in Alaxander Hamilton's actual story and what he did for the United States in its infancy. He was flawed, all of the founding fathers were, but I still really really like it. Also how it dropped some actual historical facts in there too, like how Hamilton wrote most of the essays in the Federalist Papers, and his affair with Maria Reynolds. It's an awesome way to get people to understand one of the most important founding fathers, but also it's damn fun to watch and listen to. 10/10!

I get that he can be your favorite performer in Hamilton, but I think that its a tie between Chris Jackson, Philippa Soo, and Leslie. I LOVE THEM ALL!!! Also, I think that other composers, lyricists, and other amazing creators should make musicals or plays about these famous people so that others that wouldn't be interested in learning about them, they can just see or listen to a playlist of songs and learn some facts about them. And this musical ended up having me want to research more about alexander Hamilton, Aaron burr, the Schuyler sisters, and more. example, When I got to the second apart of act 1 and the whole act 2, I wanted to know by Peggy Schuyler wasn't there. and it turns out that she had gotten ill before and died. that's why she didn't live that long. Reading the Chernow biography, I was surprised that he actually comes across as more unsavory in the musical (while the reverse is true of Burr). He was certainly flawed, but he did seem to have a pretty solid moral compass, as evidenced by his readiness to make political enemies by speaking his mind. Even the dueling, which seems SUPER alien to modern audiences, makes a lot more sense given that, indeed, "most disputes die and no one shoots." It was typically done out of honorable obligation; while Hamilton did express moral qualms regarding the practice, there were public ramifications for avoiding duels, and we all know how jealously protective he was of his reputation. Framing his life as a tragedy necessarily highlights the flaws, because that's how that narrative functions, but I was surprised at how many profoundly admirable moments Chernow recounts that the play didn't even touch on. I think the problem with our desire to neatly place people in "good" and "bad" baskets is that we lose the opportunity to learn from their actual experiences. Even just looking at the play, there is so much truth distilled into it about power and insecurity and risk and imperfection, about how our traumas shape our actions and inactions, about the power of small kindnesses and the mundaneness of great injustices. Lin-Manuel peered back into history and saw himself and people he knew in these figures, and so animated them onstage with a remarkable amount of empathy. The point isn't whether these figures are "too glorified," as if the better version of the play is the one where everyone is profoundly unsympathetic and the audience comes away feeling either defensive ("this was just another anti-American smear campaign!") or smug ("what terrible people! good thing I know better."). The point is to tell this story in a way that resonates with modern audiences and highlights the human connections, both universal and particularly cultural. The point is to see ourselves.
