U2 Elevation 2001 tour, live from Boston. this is the moment we go live on NBC during half time in the NBA Playoffs. U2 are just reaching the high point of the gig..... STREETS. what you don't see is 2 minutes before this Edge had called a rotund college kid up onto the stage to play his guitar because he was heckling. The guys in the NBC mobile were going INSANE. like freaking CRAZY. i love my job. Boxes on the left: Top= Fans perspective Bottom= Transmission.

I experienced this live on NBC and have probably watched it well over 300 times. It's my go-to. Favorite version of my favorite song. It has put me through a lot in life, and I'm glad I'm able to thank you directly for capturing that moment so brilliantly - I never thought I'd be able to do that.

OMG I lost this DVD a while ago and I was searching the internet for this "Extra". This is a special moment. You know I remember seeing this footage and thinking it's amazing, the energy and then I saw the "another perspective" extra on the DVD and I felt your energy filming it. Look, there is another moment when you film with or without you and I remember that you got that shot of the girl and your reaction... that moment when you just know you nailed it and it is a special moment caught on camera... Hope to find the DVD on e-bay to have the full experience again. This is was special moment in time.

I happened to turn on the tv when the broadcasr went live this concert. IT WAS AMAZING!!! I subsequently bought the DVD and watched it multiple times...and my favorite parts were the Making Of and the also hanging out in the control room watching Hamish call the shots and listening to the young woman count every beat of the concert. THANK YOU SO MUCH HAMISH!!!!!! Greetings from Boston!

Glad you liked it johnnyafairbank ! Don is indeed directing and co-producing the show this year. He will do an amazing job - he is a fantastic director, a gentleman and crucially will also be a co-producer. It may be worth noting that the show was nominated for more Emmys than any Oscars ceremony ever so some people did like it. Enjoy this years show's - your obviously glad its not me ! I can send you a DVD of last years if you wish. Respect Hamish

Still one of my favourite videos and one I come back to frequently. Every time i’ve to do a live to tape or live to internet broadcast I end up back here. I’m fortunate to have the ability to work with the same people and you develop a shorthand. I first saw you on the C4 show Faking It when you said something like “I fucking love live TV!” And I could so relate to that even though i’d never directed. At 30 ish at the time I couldn’t get an opening with big companies to learn the industry that way so i’ve learned every role via small jobs and now own a small production company. Love your work and you inspired me to push myself to do what I knew I was passionate about. Love the opportunity to bump into you and shake your hand sometime.

Hey Fowowns. Hayley is calling the musical breakdown, rod is not a TD he is a vision mixer. We have been a team for 20years. We spend hours talking about each track - the shots and the cuts. The American style is to call every shot or roll - that's one way of doing it but not the only way. The truck is the final piece in a huge jigsaw.

This is a great video and gives a lot of insight of how things work on a control room, but....... PLEASE, next time turn on a wide camera showing the whole room/arena/stadium/whatever during the highest point of any U2 shoo: the Street's FLASH. A Bono close-up during the flash is a FAIL; a wide angle showing the whole venue lit up is an EPIC WIN. Thanks for all your work Hamish :-)

I know I'm about 11 years too late with this comment, but in the hopes someone will see, could anyone explain what the dynamic is here in the truck? The product is amazing, but no cameras are being called? As far as I know, the AD is simply keeping time counting measures in the music and giving some extra lines of command, while Mr. Hamilton is only calling "loose it" or "good on ___" or saying which angles he likes / doesn't. I know that the UK vs. US difference of crew is a thing, but is the actual responsibilities of a "Vision Mixer" vs. A TD that drastic? It appears to me that the vision mixer is actually making the decision of which camera to take as to which one not to, when in the US that is the directors job and definitely not the TDs. I'm super interested, and only in High School so forgive my inexperience if this is a basic question.
@MattMealer
@MattMealer 2 жыл бұрын
[late reply, but maybe it'll help somebody] I'm no expert, but I think it's safe to say that yes, a UK vision mixer has quite a bit more independence in terms of shot selection than a US TD (relatively speaking). This particular song was broadcast live on US TV (during NBA playoffs/finals I think?), so in that scenario in particular, the vision mixer does seem to have significant creative latitude on something largely unscripted like this show. But this concert as a whole was being shot as-live for later editing, so apart from the live broadcast/simulcast, the line cut on the night would have only been a starting point for the project's editor(s). Hamilton's goal would have been to ensure solid, continuous coverage across all 14 cameras for maximum flexibility in post, with the line cut being secondary. There seems to have been quite a bit of fine-tuning in the edit, including 'cheating' with occasional shots from different camera positions in the previous night's concert. Though on this particular track they seem to have stuck pretty close to the line cut they created on the night, as seen in this video (and understandably so...it's just about perfect!).

Hammish, I myself am a live camera operator and in fact just worked with Bruce Green whom I think you are familiar with. Are you saying Rod is a vision mixer cause this is your terminology for "TD" or is there someone else punching the show? Also, is he calling camera takes? How do the operators know when they are about to go live? I understand shooting for Iso's but if I am not mistaken, this was actually live correct? Is Rod infact punching and calling cameras? Love you work! -kris

Ex-BBC now freelance) in to do a guest lecture/studio session with our third year TV Prod students at UCLAN in Preston, and a lot of the students wanted to maybe go down the music production route after doing it. I gave the lecturer your channel details though so the students can see how it's done live :)

Why do you say on occasion "lose it"? Is that meaning take something else? Also, I never hear who is saying ready and take, who does that in this system? Obviously, your AD is counting the measures, II just really find this fascinating and would like to know how it works.

Like a dj counts beats per minute so they can mix in the next song. She is counting in each bar of the song , this is so the vision mixer know when to to cut to different cameras. Doing live music Multi Camera is some of the most complicated but fun live TV you can do !

That lady is the "Assistant Director". The only skill you need for that job is being able to count, and sometimes being able to count backwards. It's perfect training for the job (Director) in which the greatest challenge is convincing people that what you're doing is really really hard and worth paying you a lot of money, all while not really doing much of anything besides having an opinion on which camera should be on the screen at any given time. Hence all the smoke-and-mirrors jumping around and yelling a lot. Notice almost all the people complimenting this guy are TV people. They're all hoping Hamish will give them a job someday.

+floneus +Craig Tollting euhmm no. The assistent director know everything about everything. She has to know the exact songs, when the drums start, what the singer is going to do. (in the case of music). The counting is so the directer knows when the song changes so he can switch camara's on the right moment.

Sorry to say this, but Hamish Hamilton was the WORST ACADEMY AWARDS DIRECTOR EVER after last year!!! The execution was such a mess, especially with "And the winner is..." replacing "And the Oscar goes to", and although I taped it I won't even bother dubbing it to DVD. I guess Louis J. Horvitz and Glenn Weiss were too busy, which is why they tapped Hamish instead. Thankfully, Don Mischer will be directing and co-producing this year's Oscarcast.

If I remember, things were going wrong just before this with the most important shot of the concert being next (viewable in the lower feed on the left, 1:02-1:17). Plus, the song was going out live to the NBA Finals worldwide TV broadcast. No pressure. It was a spectacular recovery, couldn't have dreamed the shot better.
