Never get tired of the nuts and bolts repairs on this channel. I have to admit even though I'm not a huge BMW fan, I'm dying to see the long term test of that 7 series. I grew up during the time when that generation was made and I'm super curious to see if the quality has held up after all that time.

At 11:48 an act of kindness was observed which had my dad been on the hammer,and I on the " holding duties" would have resulted in me being twated with said hammer.☹️

I actually find it quite relaxingly meditative to watch these repair videos! Glad Elly is in much better shape now...looking forward to the test/impressions on the BMW!

He couldn't believe 20k watched you fitting a wiper... Personally I don't care what you are up to, I'd watch it. Hubnut is about the tinkering, the unusual cars, the adventures and the characters you meet along the way. As you'd say what's not to like.

that bearing was singing a very sad song. lubrication is not an option, it's a necessity. this is a perfect example of why. dry is not good. if you don't believe me, ask your lady.

Poor ELY she must have been in considerable pain! Anyway once the work has been done she will be transformed.

Rick Pembro, what a legend! Knows all about 2cv gearboxes and steering racks too, all the frightening bits of a deuche. I did my kingpins on the car with a Haynes type tool powered with an air impact wrench. Was a very controlled method.

It's always a delight to watch someone who knows what they are doing. Rick's grey hair suggests he's done his 10K hours, and then some.

I once owned a 67 chevrolet van. solid front axel and king pins. I really really did not want to go through the replacement of the king pin bushings etc. so every time I changed oil I greased everything well. never did wear out the king pins. grease did the trick.

Lovely Jubbly, not knowing anything about kingpin suspension, I now have some knowledge. The drive home sunset was great, but must of been a pain while driving into it.

Felt like watching a blacksmith at work at some points! Good stuff, I have learnt more about Kingpins now.

A treat to watch! Last time I did kingpins was my A35's back in 1972. I soon abandoned my drifts and took the arm to an Austin garage in town. A kind old guy pressed the bushes out with a hydraulic press in no time for a packet of ciggies! Overall, A35 jobs seemed to go a lot easier than 2CV equivalents. I did the rear leaf springs, blown head gasket, clutch, brakes and loads of other jobs but (very thankfully!) the Austin never demanded strong-arm tactics.

Very theraputic viewing. Watching an expert smacking things with a big hammer. Glad Elly is feeling much better.

You can tell that guy is a proper mechanic. All the necessary tools and bodging implements at hand. I would have been up and down like a yoyo.

Thanks for the encouragement; I’ll need to fit new lower swivel pins to my Midget soon, so it was nice to see a suspension job go smoothly. ;-)

Elly and the kingpins...a new band. A stable job indeed...Great watching this, and commentary confirmed the need for an expert to perform that task. Blooming amazing that Elly made that 3.5 thousand mile trip while being in need of that work, speaks volumes for how well they were made in the first place.

Loved the video, hope you were taking notes of how it was done. Not many "experts" would let you video their process/tricks of the trade which is a shame as people are losing the skills to maintain their own cars.

Many hammers were used in this video, however I'm still chilled out by the Welsh sunset.

Being able to strip down the front to get to the engine area, is very cool.

Tech tip: when greasing the king pins, remove the excess grease. If not,it will attract grit which in turn finds it's way into the king pins and wears them out .😉😊

What a faff. Good job Rootes did the job a little differently on the Imp. The kingpin carrier was separate from the swing -arm- axle and the kingpin was locked onto the carrier by a cotter pin so the hub carrier could only rotate on the bit it was supposed to. The bearings were replaceable. Unfortunately the sealing was crap - the first time I replaced them heat, a club hammer and a large vice were needed. After that they got regular shots of grease. FWIW I believe the Imp's kingpin bearings were the first automotive application of PTFE, although they were replaced by metal bearings in overhaul kits.

That 2CV's wings are on and off with the frequency of a Lady of the Night's undergarments! So nice to drive a car after the suspension and/or steering knocks and rattles have been sorted!

I have been waiting for this since the Croatia series! I’ve been missing Elly so it’s great to see my favourite car on the Hubnut fleet getting some love! Looks like a lot of work for one day so a hiccup or two must be expected! It’s definitely not jut you😂 And yes, a sunset like that is magnificent! Brings a warm fuzzy feeling when it’s over home! Track adjustment - the locknuts not only lock the adjustment, they also take out any play in the threads. You don't want play in the threads for 2 reasons - firstly, slightly sloppy steering and secondly, the slop will wear bigger to the point there's no thread left !

My fascination was gripped starchily at the base and lubricated it in a moistly glidy way there after. The world comes precisely to an stop for Hub Nut viewing pleasure. Particularly fascinating was this episode, as I’m as mechanically abled as a Sea Manatee. And just as ridiculous in trunks, under water. “Beth all poen yn y ceir ass fod?” That’s Welsh for putting it politely.

Mmm, kingpins. I used to grease mine on my Morris Oxford just before the MOT. It takes up the play! Worked for a couple of years.

Watching a 2CV suspension and steering being stripped down with hammers, brass punches and cyl head bolts is fantastic!! Go on Elly! She has a few more years now Ian. Keep her greased though!!

Elly must be in seventh heaven after such thorough attention, such a treat to watch an expert at work. Approve hugely of the pushrod being re-used as a drift..good stuff!

Ye it's a sign of a busy repair shop when there's more sizes n shapes of drift punches than days in the month, also helps having a lathe to make bushing setters, and yes obligatory non essential sockets.

I;ve replaced king pins quite a few times and never found it necessary to remove the suspension arms or even the wings. Just loosen off the drive shafts, jack up the car and support centrally and securely. Turn it to full lock and push through the drive shaft. Remove the top welch plug and bottom screwed cap and support the hub yoke on a substantial block of metal allowing clearance for the king pin to drive through. Use drifts as shown. When all assembled use Interflon MP2/3 grease and grease up annually. Since I have used this grease, at least 15 years ago I have never had to replace a king pin. Even the MOT tester remarks that they are the best 2CV king pins he has tested. By the way I have no connection with Interflon.

That is one hell of a job. I have done it. I had to pull off the arms, machine some special drift punches, then shove everything in a 20 tonne press to get everything apart.A hammer just would not do it.

Haha, nice, an original Citroën oil filter. Remember you were test driving a Matra Murena a while ago? The Simca engine takes the same oil filters! Was one of the few parts in the Matra I wasn't worried about its future availability 😄

Drifting in a 2CV, how HubNut. A friend of mine, who ran 2CVs as daily transport for a very long time, heartily recommends giving the greasing points a few squeezes of the grease gun on a weekly basis, just for peace of mind, and it's easy to see why. I do, however, think one of the king pins failed due to poor manufacture causing the case hardening to fail. But Elly is, now, back to full hooning spec, with added race car...

Definitely a job for several pairs of hands.

In hereabouts those king pins must be drawn with an arbor press (may be quality of machining not the best and interference may be grater ) (our roads are bad too ,so perhaps manufacturers made them thighter ) Even the heads of arms(here we call them "horns") at swinging side are reinforced with a welded collar. As a former 2CV and derivatives mechanic I made many special tools to weork on them .Some of those tools were made to recover cars that had cut the suspension rod and falled to ground .As a tale I had a Mehari whose universal joints were in bad shape and one day one decided to give up,so what to do far from home? I draw away the pieces near the wheel and blocked the brake drum at gear box with the shoes adjusting nuts . Back home with only one wheel braking and tractioning (of course only in 1rst gear).YES 2CVs are the best cars in world!.

I guess these were the pre-reamed kingpin set, I had a set fitted from ECAS (not sure if they are still around), the pre reamed are a darn sight easier to do than the other. Nice job
