The new steel framed Walther PPQ Q5 Match SF, what a shooter! Love, love, love this gun! Held off buying it due to $$, but gave in to myself and snagged one online. Once I shot it, I was glad I got it! Sweet shooting gun! Now to decide: Red-Dot on it or not ?!?

Thank you for so well displaying how the takedown lever works. I read through the owners manual 5 times for it and couldn't figure it out. Can't tell you how many folks are doing reviews of the SF and don't explain that process at all. Thanks.

Had this gun in the hand today - the grip is amazing! (Q5 Match SF Champion) INSTANT LOVE! Tried beside CZ Shadow 2 ... CZ SP-01 and a Beretta M9A3 ... the Q5 felt part of my body, the others weren't close.

I just got one. I have an Olight Baldr Pro light/laser combo on the Picatinny, and stock sights up top. It is an amazing gun.

Thorough and well thought-out review! Walther is in love with its PDP format right now, making this the red-headed step child. But I think in 2019 Walther made the world's most beautiful gun ever. It is 2024, and as these guns are appearing at significant discounts throughout gun stores, I feel I have won the lottery. I much prefer this one to it's successor. The only benefit I see in the new PDP Match is the dynamic performance trigger, but frankly I think it's too sensitive. 3 lbs. is whisper light and begs for an accidental discharge in my non-professional hands. Whereas this steady blue trigger with crisp feedback at around 5 lbs. is at the perfect sweet spot for someone who's not doing competition shooting. If I ever get into competition shooting where that could possibly make a difference, I can always purchase the more modern trigger and slap it in. But I will be sad: the aesthetics and uniqueness of the blue trigger appeal to me, and its Goldilocks properties do as well. With large hands, however, I think the magwell on the pro version makes a little bit more sense, for not too much more money. When I first started getting into guns, I thought the P-38 was such a genius design that for me it is more of a classic/ prototypical gun than a 1911. The PPQ Match is it's legacy. I Ican envision sitting down and trying to design the most perfectly beautiful gun in the world, and then taking a look at this and ripping whatever I came up with up. They won.

I kinda hope HK follows and releases a metal framed VP9L. I grossly prefer pistols over long guns and know exactly what you were talking about when you mentioned being a host for the accuracy of a pistol; just keep it off the ground. Thanks again.

It would be interesting to see the grip comparison with the normal back strap on the regular PPQ. I use the large on my PPQ 45, but it does fill in that undercut.

Interesting, but then there is the 320X5Legion, or the Sig 1911 Mac Michel, and the X5 is much cheaper. Great Review. You are simply one of THE best, along with Honest Outlaw and a few others. Thanks. This just became Massachusetts compliant yesterday

Love your reviews. You do the best job on KZfaq reviewing firearms. I had to chuckle when you made the comment that the gun was one of those guns you actually have to try to miss. Let me assure you I’m one of the guys that can miss given half the chance. I really do like Walthers and I have a number in my collection but I think I’m going to pass on this one. Just getting too old to handle a 40 ounce gun again. I like my P 99 and my PPQ so I will stick with those two for the time being. Have a great day and take care.

Any "M2" style full-size PPQ magazine should work in this. The "Classic" mags won't work.

If Walther gives a solution to that beaver tail, would an owner of this gun have to buy a new gun or would the solution allow current PPQ Q5 Match SF guns to swap out that part of the gun? Thanks

The beavertail is an integral part of the steel frame unlike a 1911 where it is often part of the pivoting grip safety.

@@HammerStriker Thanks for the reply. Yeah I know its integral but some have expressed concern over the size and the angle of this particular one. Ive read comments that Walther is "working on a fix" or words to that effect. I wondered if the fix would come by way of a new model or if this component of the gun could be switched out with a new part.

My suspicion is that it will either be a new model or a "mid-model engineering change". There is nothing that can be swapped out as it is all one piece - the beavertail simply part of the steel frame.

Gloves are necessary with this thing. That beaver tail sucks to deal with after a couple mag dumps.

The laws are applied differently for the gun ranges. I live in NJ and am a member of a gun range and they stock 15 round magazines even though Jersey has a 10-round limit on mags. Apparently the ranges are given more leeway when it comes to some things.

That's great if true. I hope it was the end users who made them act, and they at least they didn't go all "If you think our grip is uncomfortable, you're wrong, deal with it." But I wonder how they're going to do it? The depth and the curve of the grip is what made it painful for me. If new grip panels could reshape the beavertail, that could work. Otherwise, they'd have to reshape the entire frame. That could explain why production numbers are still so low, they're already working a revised model... just a guess.

@@lon242 They got some good feedback from their pro team and customers, and, therefore, already developed a new trigger for the sf (so called "expert trigger"). I heard that in Ulm before they formally announced it on IWA and it turned out to be true. The same people also told me Walther will work on the beaver tail and that seems to be what Walther told German press as well. So I am confident it is gonna happen. No idea how long it is going to take though.
