Bunny_Foo and I took a hammock out and a handful of different hammock under insulation in 33*F weather to see how each performed under a thermal camera.
The rating for each insulation is the comfort rating provided by Bunny_Foo.
PDF report for all the tests can be downloaded from goo.gl/awWveY.
The raw thermal images can be downloaded from goo.gl/APXp3n.
Please apply the pause button liberally to view the slides as the video moves along pretty quickly (the "K" button on your keyboard will pause the video if you're viewing on a desktop).
The thermal videos were taken using a dynamic temperature scale. The still thermal images with temperature points have been normalized to the same temp scale. The still images can be compared 1:1.
If you've got suggestions for other insulation tests please let us know and we'll do our best to test it out.
I really hope ya'll like the video - it took us a couple of weekends to get the proper footage for the video and the PDF report. I hope it's entertaining / helpful. Happy trails!

Good call, Guy. There is definitely an assumed level of familiarity with much of the gear. I'll add the suggestion to the follow up video. Happy Trails!

I've watched a lot of hammock videos but this one's a first and freaking genius. Entertaining and useful but perhaps not exactly accurate. Wished I'd thought of it myself

Thanks again, David, I appreciate the extremely kind words. I've got a laundry list of changes to make to the next round of testing to make it a bit more accurate/scientific/objective. There are some logistical challenges involved I haven't yet solved so it's taking a bit longer than I'd like to get the follow up filmed. Until then... happy trails!

Here's a suggestion for next time. Place three 6"x6" squares of masking tape on the "insulator" and have a similar sized piece mounted above the hammock behind it on a 2"x4" for a better gauge of the actual temperatures. The masking tape will give you similar base lines for the spot temps and it is often used by thermographers for reading the temps due to it's emissivity rating being closer to a value of one (0.92 I think off the top of my head). Shiny things such as sheen of fabric will lie to you on the temps. Additionally, since the hammock offers no insulative value it is possible to see through it thermally and the thermal reflections of people or other living things surrounding the hammock to show up on the temperature readings due to the reflectix material. It's just like looking through a trash bag placed in front of a mirror with your FLIR and seeing everything beyond the plastic clearly but having a mirror show your thermal reflection in it back at you. An accurate reading of the mirror would be impossible without some masking tape and you leaving the room. Lastly, this video should be done at night for the thermal part due to the solar flooding effect on the area that is diffused through the tree limbs possibly causing the temps to differ slightly. I have to do all of my rooftop shots because of this. Great video and very entertaining.

John - those are great ideas - thank you! I especially like the masking tape suggestion. Seems like a solid way to get true temperature numbers. Filming at night might be troublesome but I'll add that to my list of logistical challenges for version 2. Thanks again and happy trails!

You can film part one of the video during the day showing the items and part two at night since thermal cameras don't need light to see. Also, since most people are concerned mostly with the nightly temps it would perhaps be closer to what the viewer is most likely looking for.

You might want to do this again, but show the bottom of the hammock instead of the side.

+Justin R. Cutler You're absolutely correct. I attempted for this video but logistically it is challenging. Hanging at a normal height doesn't allow enough room to get under the hammock to frame a proper, reproduce-able shot. Hanging much higher than normal and it's difficult to get in or out of the hammock. I'd like to redo the test indoors so I could get the lower angle shot - I think this would make a high hang a bit more feasible than out in the woods.

Great information, very useful. It would have been good to have several components used together to see what 'real world ' application would look like for below freezing temps.

So maybe I misunderstood how this works. Is this showing how much heat is LOST through the underquilt, or how much heat is RETAINED by the underquilt?
@FatherGoat
@FatherGoat 5 жыл бұрын
The thermal camera sees the heat that escaped the hammock and the insulation being used in each test.

Testing with an underquilt protector, UQ w/UQP with and w/o tarp, UQ + UQP + tarp pitched tight vs high/porch mode , adding a TQ, different clothing weights.... Just a few ideas. Great vid! I'd love to see how my new HG -10° set looks on thermal !

+Chesapeake Hammock and Outdoors All great ideas - I now have a hammock sock / UQ protector so these will surely make round 2. I bet that 10 degree quilt set would look mighty nice under the thermal camera! Happy Trails!

Father Goat Cool, I'll make sure to check the next one out too then. I def notice a difference with my Warbonnet XL sock or winter cover + 2QZQ UQP on my XLC than without, should look neat on that camera. Love my HG quilts too! I did -1° with my old 0° set and the digital thermometer inside read 87° , I can only imagine how warm this new minus 10° set is gonna be.

Very cool. Like others have mentioned it’s the internal temps inside the hammock we’re interested in. I’d wonder what would happen if you had a top cover on the hammock and maybe a tarp? The trapped heat would probably make the whole hammock orange. Very neat hardware. I hope you do more testing.

Thanks guys. We'll definitely get some temperature reading from within the hammock on future tests. The problem has been one of logistics - I haven't found a great/safe way to hang the hammock high enough to capture thermals from below while at the same time allowing safe entry and exit from the hammock. I've got a list of suggestions from KZfaq and Reddit ready to go once I figure out how/where to hang for tests v2. Thanks for swinging by, Happy Trails!

This test was a great idea and thank you for posting it. However, I don't want to be 'that guy' but, it looks like we are seeing not just Bunny_Foo's body heat but also warmth from the Sun on the outside of the hammock & underquilts. Note at 3:47 the tree's shadow covering where his legs would be in the hammock and then again at 3:49. There seems to be some reflected radiation. Also note that the brightest spot in 3:49 is the location directly aimed at the Sun. As you've already stated, it would be great to see this test done again inside, and ideally with any HVAC turned off and maybe just use LED lighting to minimize thermal influences external to the hammock/UQs. Thank you again.

That was interesting to watch. So whats your take on the results ?
@FatherGoat
@FatherGoat 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg Wheat ... that sometimes you really do get what you pay for. The performance in the insulation scaled almost linearly with price. We tried our best here to be objective with our tests but ultimately there will always be an amount of subjectivity to warmth and comfort. The HammockGear down quilts were far and away the more expensive ways to keep warm but the experience hanging with them is also on a different level than the pads/bags.
@otway00

I use UQs with my hammocks as they work better than the pads I first used and are far more comfortable to use.

@FatherGoat

+3nertia Definitely should have quantified the "comfort" ratings with proper data. I've heard a few suggestions of using a thermometer to measure inner quilt temps but a few spot checks with the thermal camera would do it too. Happy trails
