Hi everyone - just to preempt the comments, I had a sleeping mat inside my bivvi bag so I wasn’t just lying on a hammock. I had a sleeping mat, a bivvi AND a sleeping bag

My friend I go bike camping with uses a hammock and always has an underquilt and top quilt instead of a sleeping bag. (A sleeping bag or puffy clothing's loft get crushed under your body and stops keeping you warm.) Another tip I like is to fill a Nalgene with boiling water before bed and keep it near your feet.

Having camped in the Andes, Himalayas, Atlas, Alps and in the Arctic, I highly recommend you take the puffy pants, jacket and sleeping bag with the bivvy bag and a sleep mat. It gets very cold at night in those mountains despite it being boiling hot in the day. Good luck.

Exactly what I used to do bivvying in the alps. Every item has to have more than one use. Sleeping bag was a luxury !

With an underquilt beneath your hammock and a top quilt you’ve been much, much warmer, the insulation isn’t crushed by your body, so it keeps its loft. Hammock camping if done right is very cosy!

Great video Juliet - love watching the bikepacking content. I can vouch for the Mora which was my first foray into hammocks and worked a treat. Your idea for ditching the sleeping bag makes sense and there are a couple of manufacturers who make leg-only sleeping bags so you can use your existing jacket.

I grew up on these trails as a youngster. Still enjoying them today!

when I was in the military we used a poncho with poncho liner. Cold weather training we used the poncho liner in our sleeping bag. You should look into the poncho liner or some call whoobie! Always enjoy your videos!

A small suggestion: These days I always take a water bottle - at least 2L cap - boil myself some drinking water last use of the stove at camp, chuck it in the foot of my sleeping bag. No more cold feet :) and plenty of frsh water to drink in the morning.

lovely trip! here is my try-n-error learnings: even the fluffiest bag / jacket will compress under your body weight and insulation is gone. get a so-called ‘underquilt’ that will hang outside of the hammock to avoid compression and you will no longer out through your back…

The only thing I will say about using puffy pants and jacket as a SB is if you get them wet during the day you have no warm SB. The puffy stuff will also get damp during the day when you wear it and be not as warm when you are sleeping. Not sure if you figured that out, writing this at the beginning of the vid. I hammock camp a ton and a sleeping bag just isn't enough insulation for a hammock. You could bring a foam mat to sleep on in the hammock but I'd recommend a hammock under quilt for real warmth. Think of it as a sleeping back for under your hammock that holds the heat in. Your body will squish anything between you and the hammock. Without the air to retain the heat, the insulation has almost no value.

Nice, I slept on the opposite side of the valley to you on Sharp Tor a while back, beautiful spot for a sunrise. I initially went cycling for 3 days but ended up out for a week and a half :)

I've had the same idea with the puffy pants, haven't tested it out but it seemed like a good idea, especially in summer or in combination with a lighter sleepingbag. But I guess you would also need puffy booties for your feet.... I'm glad I'm not the only one with this idea. I think we are going to see more modular solutions like this in the future.

From having watched & read others experiences of using a hammock - a sleeping mat alone is unlikely to be enough insulation unless it’s a warm evening so usually requires an underquilt. Couple that with the environment you want to visit (mountainous regions can be lovely during the day but bloody freezing at night) and the kit required soon mounts up thus negating any desire to pack minimally. In the end, a good quality mat, sleeping bag & bivi may be the way to go. Ive not tried a hammock yet, want to, but fear the required extra investment may be pointless. This video has helped further my reluctance to try it 😂 but another treat to watch, thanks Juliet, keep ‘em coming!

Hi Juliet. been in the desert a few times and froze. I now use these from Joe a supper cool lad from Scotland along with puffy pant, jacket and a quilt from Mountain Hardware. Hope this helps. I will be following your dot if you have one. cheers for being cool. Nick

Seems that one has to try different things and see what works,in different conditions. Rather like Autumn/Winter riding on the bike.. I know what I need to wear in most conditions on the bike..do tend to overdress a bit perhaps. A good,warm sleeping bag is key though,along with insulating under layer. Have a great quilt that hangs under the hammock as can get very chilly hanging off the floundering.

Hello Juliet, I suggest that if you do wild camping, here in Chile, you bring a liner, because the nights are colder than 7 degrees and if it rains before the race it will be even colder. currently there are about 2-3 degrees(Celsius) at night in the area of ​​​​across Andes.

You do find some really nice places to ride, not so far away either :-) Not a sleeping out kind of person though, definitely a trip back home.

Hi, hammock camping is lovely but without an underblanket you will lose lots of heat but it is bulky. As it gets colder I tend to switch to bivvy bag as feel I dump less heat with a sleeping mat and foil under sheet to protect the bivvy bag. Also I wrap the strap once or twice around the tree and hook the clip through one of the loops...less slippage...hope that helps. Love the bubbly video

From my experience of alpine climbing and bivies, whilst jacket/pants seems you can use at other times, in reality you don’t and they’re often bulkier and heavier than the sleeping bag.

Very glad your using Rab gear because they have really upped their game in the last few years design wise. Played with their Mythic sleeping bags like 400 and the new Mythic alpine and light Jackets 900fil both have amazing weight and pack size. Working big release sales in Stockholm with Rab suppliers....fun to play with new kit. Enjoy your adventures as always.

All of us hammock campers collectively watching, oh no she is going to be so cold! I will echo everyone else in recommending a bottom quilt underneath the hammock for insulation, but I will say that I do often pair puffy pants and a puffy vest with my top quilt to get just a bit more warmth in the shoulder seasons! I have the puffy knickers from Kari Traa plus the matching hooded vest and I absolutely adore them. I like Rab too, but this set packs down much smaller. Technically, you do better weightwise to just get a proper quilt set/sleeping bag, but then it is bulkier and like you I like the ability to have multi use items. Plus if I change into that before bed, I am not going to bed cold! If you don't want to do an underquilt, I found what actually works a treat better in a hammock than a mat is one of those silver car window shades! I stick spare clothing into any chilly spots like at my hip or under my feet. A friend of mine actually brings little down booties which I am quite envious of.

Hi , I really like your videos, with your big jacket and trousers inside your sleeping bag you run the risk that the stuffing is to compressed in jacket and bag due to not much room , you need the stuffing to be loose so it traps more air that your body warms up , maybe why you felt a bit cold in the night . I am a British expat and live in the alps I have been winter camping regularly here for the last 11 years and I have found that for good sleeping in winter sometime less is more . Hope that gives you a few ideas of what to maybe try out . Keep up the great videos 👍 you have inspired me to combine my main hobby of wild camping with biking . You need an insulated sleeping pad or what's called an underquilt for a hammock. Any part of your body touching it will be pretty cold. Also, any insulation from your down jacket and pants is compressed between you and the hammock so it doesn't work very well at that point.

usually for summer use, but could be adapted, i use a waist sleeping bag, and the insulated jacket, in a bivi. i'd be using the jacket of an evening anyway, so why not sleep in it too.

Hello! take a look at the equipment for omm gear (original mountain maraton) is exactly what you look for. raid line the pants turn into a sleeping bag along with the jacket, and lena willcox uses a system similar to yours she only gets in a metallic emergency bivvy on the inside to boost, and yes in the Andes the temperatures are pretty low even during the day.

Howdy! If one is wearing too many layers while sleeping, your circulation is not very good and you will feel cold. Less layers inside the bag will prolly be warmest, if you pick this route, seeing that you run cold anyway. Another commenter recommended the under quilt, I second that!

A doggy works lol. Or you will find that the down jacket used as a blanket over the sleeping bag between bivvy loads warmer than wearing,as it allows body heat to warm up the bag.

The Selk'Bag (or Musuc'Bag) is a sleeping bag with arms, legs and a hood, which can sleep in AND worn as outerwear!

It’s not surprising that you were cold in a hammock since you had cold air below you. Great idea in the summer but not when it’s cold outside.

You were probably cold due to cold air coming up underneath your hammock! Maybe for lightness use a silver foil roll May 👍

Hi Juliet, Fantastic video! What’s your opinion of the hood of your Rab Mythic Ultra down jacket? I own the same jacket, but I find its hood even when fully cinched still has a large gap around my head. The hood doesn’t have a volume adjuster to remedy that. The jacket has kept me very warm in frigid conditions but its hood could be better. I do the same as you by wearing a hat with it and sometimes a gaiter too or even a down gilet underneath the jacket. Thanks.

It looks like you did not used the underquilt (underblanket), which is necessary in hammock sleepeing. Look it up. With that you will be warm and cozy.

If you are feeling rich, you could use the PHD Pied D'Elephant.... basically a sleeping bag for your lower body... paired with a down jacket.

Those ‘extreme’ ratings on sleeping bags basically mean that if you also wear all your clothes as well, you probably won’t die 😯

You need an insulating layer under you because the draft under the hammock will make you very cold

You need to wear less layers, you body heat will heat up your sleeping bag and keep you warm, just a jacket and a bivi won't keep you warm, I hammock camp and put a mat in the hammock and a 7c sleeping bag and just sleep in boxers and a t shirt and I'm roasting warm, letting your body heat warm the bag is key, to many layers like you have won't keep you warm, give it ago 👍

About the sleeping bag from Rab: If it's not yours and you can't keep it, i would not sleep in it. If you sleep in it, the sleeping bag is now worth more than the retail price. I've seen men buy a lot less, for a lot more. Trust me.

Have tried a lot and cant really recommend a hammock. I like it for short time comfort, but it gives no advantage above sleeping on the ground. Ditch the hammock.

Hammocks suck. Cot is far superior.
