Hammock Suspension Options: The Becket Hitch... and what happens when you shock load it!

I've been experimenting with a few different types of suspension and I've liked using the Becket Hitch. It doesn't need any hardware and it’s easy to tie. However, it can be difficult to untie once it’s loaded. We'll go over this knot using a couple different types of webbing and check out the results.
Also, while testing out this knot, I shock loaded the system and was surprised with what happened...
IMPORTANT NOTE
The carabiner I used with the flat webbing was not a rated carabiner. Any carabiner used as part of a hammock suspension should be tested to ensure it will support the weight and forces it could be subjected to.

Brandon J another viewer commented about using 3/4 mule tape instead of the 1/2 inch. After this test I didn’t like its abrasion resistance in addition to how easily it slipped when loaded. Webbing with the becket hitch seems to be the way to go. So many options!! Lol Good luck out there!!

Dynema Webbing is the way to go; not mule tape. Maybe the 3/4" is working better than the 1/2".

I gave up using slippery webbing with the becket hitch. It’s come loose a few times too many. Thankfully it was in my yard over grass and not on some mountain over some rocks. Now I stick with the spider/poly 1.0 webbing from Dutch.

Very instructive video and as you mentioned, really drives home the importance of testing your gear before getting out on the trail. With so many suspension options available, it's always a great idea to have tested options available to fit the current conditions. Good camera positioning and the audio was crystal clear. Happy trails and thanks for sharing.

Errol Flynn the only thing damaged was the mule tape (Antigravitygear) and my CL (Dream Hammock) so no big deal. I fixed it up right after! I think the biggest lesson to take away is to be cautious using mule tape. I still use the Becket Hitch on other materials, but I don’t think I’ll take the chance with mule tape again. There are other options available that I feel more comfortable using. Thanks for the comment! Feel free to share the vid!

People say to run the treestraps straight-ish through the loop or hardware, as you do in this video. But in this video you can clearly see why I always put it at the midpoint of the tree, at the shortest distance to my hammock. That's where the connection wants to be. I've tried doing it the recommended way (the way you do in the video) and always get 'creep' and ending up getting a bad night's sleep after my suspension settles into where it wants to be. I also imagine the abrasion of the tree bark on the strap when the slippage occurs is equally bad, if not worse, than having a bend in my strap where it wants to settle to and will eventually end up at. Am I wrong about this? It seems like everyone recommends a straight-ish strap, but it has never worked for me when I've tried it. I've also never had any failures doing it 'my way.' I'm not trying to be critical, just trying to learn something that puzzles me. 👍
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think either way is an issue. The problem comes if the strap is run through the connection on the opposite size of the tree and had to make a hard bend back. Then there’s a lot of excess stress and tension on the connection point. You’re good! Thanks for the comment! Nick
@hanelyp1
@hanelyp1 Жыл бұрын
I noted the same with the treestraps, they want to settle on equal angles between the 3 sides of the junction. Anything else will be prone to shift with bouncing. And when shifting allow more energy in the shock load when it settles.

Marlin spike hitch way easier to untie. Just put the load on the knot and not the spike.
@rickwebermusic
@rickwebermusic 5 жыл бұрын
I like Jeff Myers' trick of larksheading a small loop of Zing-It to the apex of the CL. After loading, you simply pull the loop upwards toward the tree, and it creates just enough separation between the CL and the knot to allow the Becket hitch to release more easily.

rweb82 that’s a good idea. I’ve since started using the Venom Webbing from Ripstop by the Roll, and it’s been pretty easy to unload the knot. I have noticed that certain material are harder to untie than other so that trick is good to keep in mind! Thanks!

I just ordered Dutch's UHMWPE straps for a becket hitch setup last night. I believe they're very similar to RSBTR's Venom straps (both are UHMWPE). Glad to hear they release more easily than the poly straps.
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
rweb82 I’m pretty sure they’re similar. The Venom Straps are black and Dutch’s are white. I haven’t had an issue with them slipping which is why I’m sticking with them over trying other straps (such as the 1.5 Spider webbing). Let me know what you think of the ones from Dutchware!

Nick, have you found any ultralight hammock straps that can be used with marlin spike hitch that actually stay flat (don't fold/crease)?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t use the marlin spike hitch for my regular setup, so I’m not quite sure which material would be best. Obviously, the thinner webbing tends to crease easier than a thicker webbing. A good compromise may be the poly/spider webbing from Dutchware. Hope this helps. Nick

H there, nice videos, keep them coming. Do you recommend using spider web with a toggle and use that toggle to attach the continuous loop? When I tie my spider web to the continuous loop using a becket hitch it is very difficult to untie:..any suggestions?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use a toggle with a marlin spike hitch. Just make sure that when you put the continuous loop over the toggle, that the CL is resting on the knot and not the toggle. Enjoy! Nick

Mark Hilsee I’ve used the mule tape suspension for about 6 months and I’ve never had an issue... I also have never shock loaded it like I did in the video. Lol. So this experience didn’t scare me off completely. Haha! I’ll tell you what I was really impressed with... was that the Whoopie sling suspension was subjected to ALL of the shock loading of that video and it didn’t show any signs of wear. I’m leaning towards the Whoopie’s as my main suspension, but I’m glad I have the knowledge of the becket hitch if I ever get jammed up and need to use it! Thanks for the comment!

That was eye opening for sure. I was just about looking at 1/2’’ mule tape as an alternative suspension. Question for you. Do you carry extra suspension with you on a trail in case just like this when you main suspension fails? Amsteel is light enough to have additional whoopie sling for insurance.
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Dima Habenko that’s a good idea to have another line just in case. I don’t carry anything extra as far as suspension goes. My webbing is 7 feet long and the mule tape straps are 12 feet. I probably lost around 2-3 feet when the suspension failed, so if this happened out in the field, I would’ve just used the remaining 8-10 feet and attached that to the webbing. My bigger concern was if it melted through my continuous loop. Now that would’ve needed some out of the box thinking!! Lol
@JasperJanssen
@JasperJanssen 4 жыл бұрын
That’s only a little bit of shock loading - the mule tape must be really close to the edge under normal circumstances.
@TripleNickelOutdoors

With all the different suspension options out there, mule tape isn’t one that I would recommend. Especially after seeing what could happen under some minimal stress.

Triple Nickel Outdoors why not a bowline? Don’t get me wrong, figure eights or even overhand knots in a bight are kind of my go to for at least lightly loaded applications but I wouldn’t think this qualified as lightly loaded.

Test Bed yeah, that’s been my experience. Plus, I’m a bigger guy (225 lbs.) so I’m aware that I’m putting more stress on whatever suspension I’m using. Another viewer commented about using 3/4” muletape instead of the 1/2”. Seems like a small weight penalty and could provide more stability....

Pretty good demonstration. I have recently moved to 3/4" mule tape with continuous loop, and haven't experienced any unusual wear, but I have never bounced in my hammock to test it either. I always try to get in and out of my hammock as gingerly as possible, simply because I don't want to damage my hammock or suspension components. Regarding your worn continuous loop, they're super easy to make yourself. Also remember, most knots can reduce the rated load of the rope or material by 10-60% or more.

Mike Curtis hey mike, yeah, same as you, I always get into my hammock gently, for the exact reason of what happened! Except this time when I wanted to test its limits!! Lol Another viewer commented on the 3/4 inch mule tape. I may make a change to the wider mule tape. ... and I was able to make some new loops and my Sparrow is back up and running!! Thanks for the comment!

Hi Nick. Great video! I noticed the trouble you had untying the knot after loading it. You may have run across this tidbit in the years since making this video. Larks head a small loop to the end of your continuous loop. Tie your becket hitch as usual, leaving this small loop sticking out the end. When you go to untie your loop, use this small loop and the tail of your suspension to pull the knot loose. Works like a charm. Autumn Ultralight makes a continuous loop (called a becket loop) that has this small loop built in.

@michaeldreiling36
@michaeldreiling36 6 жыл бұрын
I had to watch your video twice to be sure. What you're calling a becket hitch is actually just a half hitch. A true becket hitch does not completely wrap the opposing loop, but rather splits the loop and comes up "through" the loop. It's very closely related to a sheet bend. And as you discovered, a single half hitch is not secure under shock loading. Use a true "becket hitch", and you'll get satisfactory results!
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Dreiling the knot is a Becket hitch but it uses a bight so that it has the ability to be untied. If the whole amount of webbing were passed through the loop then it would be almost impossible to untie once the knot was loaded. I go over the correct way to tie both the Becket hitch and the double Becket Hitch in the beginning of the video and then I show the modified version using a bight, a.k.a. The Slippery Becket Hitch.
