As someone who had a 2010 mini for a couple years, that BMW, both levers shift up and down system is both assanine and amazing because it allows you to drive 1 handed in manual mode with ease.

Pulling the lever towards you, to change up, is the correct configuration... Towards you for up, away for down. Every proper sequential box is like that.

Car bore here: The Bentley has a normal automatic with a torque converter that can be manually shifted with the paddles whereas the Ferrari has a regular manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch that you have to shift with the paddles. I think it has an auto mode but only when the car is in comfort mode.

@@albinnygren2367 I'm pretty sure the Bentley had a conventional single clutch automatic ZF, which means it operates the exact same as the Ferrari dual clutch one (except the Ferrari might be quicker and smoother)

@@MrJoe988 not sure how many gears it has either the ZF6HP or ZF8HP not sure which one the VAG Group used at the time,but in short term is just a Normal torque converter The Old R8 with the R-Tronic was a Single Clutch and apperently it was horseshit violent when it shifted like the SMG from BMW

Yes that's what he said. Logic would dictate push forwards to upshift and backwards to downshift because that's logical.

@@Controldo But thats not how it works, sequential shifters work exactly like how his description was explained, even the DSG in my Octavia works like that pull back to up shift foward to down shift.

Clarkson praising the C6 Corvette for having a manual (in fact, I'm pretty sure it was the only option on the ZR1) feels like it hasn't aged well considering the C8 will only have either a sequential or an automatic. And I'm pretty sure the auto is only an option because it's still primarily bought by old people.

I've only ever driven cars with automatic transmissions. What are the advantages to manual or flappy paddles?

The advantage of both of them over automatic is forcing the car into a different gear to normal for the RPM. That is useful in situations such as driving over ice or down a steep hill when you want to select a low gear for better traction and engine braking. The advantage of flappy paddle is faster shifts. The advantage of manual is being able to slip the clutch for better control when parking. The advantage of automatic over both of them is driver ease, use in a hybrid system and the car always shifting into the most efficient gear.

@@CrazyWeeMonkey They are certainly easier. However if you’re parking uphill in a manual (and you’re skilled with the clutch) then you can hold it on the bite point, creep forward and roll back very precisely. Ultimately both will get the job done and it largely comes down to preference.

another point worth bringing up, it's also more fun. Like you can see when jeremy bangs through gears in supercars, it's satisfying to feel like you're a bigger part of the car's performance.

You dont get this problem in a dsg golf r or rs3. Sports auto mode ar changer up for you and you do the down shifting.

I would much rather have a manual anyday on a performance car. However, the DCT's have made paddle shifting quite fun, and relaxing (auto) when I want. Speaking from experience with a 570s and C8.
