Hammond SKX Pro vs 1958 Restored Hammond B3 Comparison

I recently got the Hammond SKX Pro. I spent many hours to tweak it to sound like my restored 1958 B3. There are so many parameters you can tweak. Of course, it cannot sound exactly like my B3, but now they both sound very close and there are only subtle differences.
*No Leslie or Leslie simulator was used. The direct line out was used. Therefore, you can hear the raw sound of both organs.

This is a great way to do a comparison. There is very little discernible difference between the two.

They sound the same to me! The only difference is you can carry the SKX Pro into the concert venue by yourself and don't need help getting it up on stage! 😃

I own the SKX Pro and an A100. I have owned several clones too. These comparisons only go so far as they only show a snapshot - a limited amount of settings being copied and compared. I like the SKX Pro and it's portable, but when you play a real Hammond tonewheel/ Leslike combo, it's like the Ghost of some big black Moma from New Orleans entering the room there is a presence you just can't digitalise - a poltergeist in every one. Sweat grease and gospel soul. I am just waiting to get an adapter for my real Leslies, then take thev SKX Pro through it's paces. Cant wait

Great demo! My ears can't hear a difference! My BACK sure could feel the difference. LOL If the weight of the SKX Pro is in fact 37.25 lbs, then that's a major back saver. I think my old B3 weight something like 400 lbs or 450 lbs.... something stupid heavy that even with the moving dollies, it was painful.... I mean PAINFUL to move around. LOL

The SKX Pro can sound very close to the vintage one. I cannot move my B3 for gigs, so it's very convenient to use a good clone like the SKX Pro. I have been using it for two years and love it.

Nothing can beat the old electro-magnetic originals - not today and not tomorrow! For example: play with 888888888 and heavy block chords a´ la Wild Bill Davis (if you can) on upper. Now you should hear AND FEEL the differences!

Actually on this video, it's very difficult to tell. I did play the all the drawbars out. Of course, restored vintage Hammonds are the best, and I have two of them. But, seriously clones sound a lot better than vintage ones in a bad shape. The Leslie is another important factor.

@@HalTsuchida Right...every organ in bad shape sound bad - electro-magnetic or clones. During the last 46 years I played on some hundret different electro-magnetic full size Hammonds on tour worldwide. There were a lot of good ones but also some bad ones. Most of the bad ones were far away from original condition: chops, organs with extra guts like string bass and some other unneccessary stuff built in. My own B3´s are #56104 (manufact. on Dec. 31, 1954 - right 1954!) and #67911 from 1957. The Hammond factory made some test models before regular sale to customers started in Jan. 1955 and shipped them to US-Hammond Studios / dealers in Nov. & Dec. 1954. Most of them were C3´s but also a handful of B3´s. My #56014 is one of them and the oldest known B3 in full working condition. Still works with the old wax caps and still sounds wonderfuI. Some restored organs with new caps sound too sharp and glassy - not my choice! I would not sell #56014 for a Million bucks!

Great job, the skx pro sounds really close to youre original B3. If you set the key-click a bit softer than what you have here, I would like it better. It will be less dominant.
@HalTsuchida
@HalTsuchida Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's not that simple. The real B3 has different keyclick on each note. Thus, the higher and lower notes have softer keyclick. However, on the SKX Pro, the keyclick is the same. If you turn the keyclick, that affect other ranges. Therefore, I made the keyclick sound similar to the higher-range. Also, the timbre of the keyclick is different. It is one of the hardest components to emulate. It's not simple as you say.

@@HalTsuchida that’s so interesting. I saw another comparison video where the SK Pro and and XK5 sounded very different totally - with the XK5 having a more open almost hi-fi sound while the SK Pro sounded muffled and compressed. I can help but wonder if it’s something about how the video was recorded but I see other people saying the XK5 has more “punch” and “sparkle”, so I’m not sure what to think.

I have both and posted a comparison on both to my B3 somewhere. Maybe on Facebook... It's all about tweaking. Out of the box, none of the clones satisfy me, so I always tweak all the parameters. The XK5 and the SK(X) Pro offer so many.

@HalTsuchida
@HalTsuchida 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. There is nothing sounds like a real Leslie. Honestly the Leslie sim is useable. I do use a full range speaker with the Leslie sim sometimes. It has been improved, however, I prefer using the Leslie or the Tornado 115. There is nothing like the cabinet resonance and moving air.
@thomaskorthals5894

The SKX Pro sounds good, if you compare the direct Sound with no Leslie. The internal Leslie of the SKX Pro is weak. So a real Leslie is a must. This means weight. So Viscount and HX3 do a better job with their internal Leslie. I only use a Leslie at home. So what is the solution, if I don‘t want to carry a Leslie around?
@HalTsuchida
@HalTsuchida Жыл бұрын
@@thomaskorthals5894 I disagree. After you tweak the onboard Leslie sim on the SK(X) Pro, it sounds pretty good. Sometimes I play gigs with the sim. I often use the Leslie 2101mk2 or the Tornado 115.
