30+mpg out of a 3 litre turbo sounds good to me, I'm getting about that from a 1.6 diesel vivaro van 🤣

When I went on holiday with mine and a fully loaded boot. I managed to get 46mpg in eco mode and averaged 31mpg on normal commute.

I've actually reached 43mpg on it this week driving on mostly 50-60mph over 70 miles. Apple carplay in these cars is also a must, I agree. I had to code mine in

So ive just traded my Golf R in for one of these i have the auto. Ive had it a week and there is definitely no regrets. I was a bit terrified of the potential fuel consumption - but the beauty of this car is you can make it sip the fuel with normal driving in eco/comfort mode and itll return respectable figures, my normal driving averages 34mpg (i got 27 in the Golf) which is amazing considering the power of this car. It can be a quiet sophisticated, comfortable cruiser - but it can play the animal very well also. Obviously if you cane it all the time the mpg will drop to early-mid 20s, but overall its a great car for the money, that 6 pot engine is an absolute peach. So I guess to anyone thinking of getting one - do it now!

The side stripe adds a good amount of aggression and uniqueness. Furthermore, it’s an OEM BMW M performance mod. Don’t listen to what others have to say, if you like it then you like it. I do admit it looks better on the 4 series, but nevertheless, it sort of ‘completes’ the M performance look.

This video was one of a few which influenced my decision to go out and buy this awesome car last weekend. I went for a 2017 LCI SE in white with the same accents / aero package your car has (in OP video). I am absolutely astonished how a 3.0L turbo engine can be so good on fuel, I have managed 217 miles as I ticked over to half a tank... that's incredible! I only live a 4 minute trip from where I work, so more than anything this is my weekend car as during the week it barely sees any miles or action. Loving the car, and thank you for the video / content!

32mpg given the performance, capacity and sound of the engine is great. I get 24mpg in a t5 Volvo and its poor for commuting but the 5pot sound is so much better than all these turbo 4pots that's about. They're a unbelievable value for money car and the rear wheel drive makes it unique, albeit youre dynamically limited on UK roads in comparison to a 4 wheel drive unless you drive like you stole it.

MPE is a valveless system, it's the standard backbox with the flap issue.

The fuel economy is definitely you, I had one of these with a diff, mapped, decat and catback and would comfortably get 35 on any journey that I wasn't booting it. Even 38 on longer journeys wasnt an issue.

Came back to this a few years later as I finally got out and test drove one of these. I’ll be honest, I was totally intimidated by it at first, I’ve had a Mini Cooper S which is the fastest car I’ve owned, nothing compared to this. I currently drive a 1 series diesel so still RWD but no way near enough power to cause any concern. I can thankfully say tho, I absolutely loved it. Drove amazingly and that power was just mind blowing (to me). I didn’t find it sketchy at all and it was completely standard so still had the open diff, I didn’t try and get it sideways however as I wasn’t quite confident enough and it also wasn’t my car. I did have it in sport+ with the traction off and never once felt I wasn’t in control. The roads were very dry however and was about 22 degrees so the conditions may have played a part in that. I’ve been looking at these for ages and now have saved up enough money to buy a hot hatch. Things like servicing and general running costs concern me but I’ve seen some videos that have eased that, honestly doesn’t seem too bad to run and if you buy a hot hatch you’re always gonna be paying more running costs which I’m fine with (as long as they’re not eye watering). I am thinking of servicing with a specialist rather than main dealer as it will be cheaper and I’ve been taking my current bmw there and they have been great. If anyone has any insight into running an M140i daily in 2023 please do share!

I've had my 140i for over 3 years now, and this guy is talking absolute crap! Twitchy - no, solid as a rock, holds the road like glue, if you plan the line properly and don't steer like a prat! Understated - yes but that's the point! Exhaust rattle - NO, no rattles anywhere, after 40K miles, tight as a proverbial! Internal equipment - excellent, sat nav great, music centre bloody brilliant, full volume AC/DC with no distortion! MPG - for a 3 litre straight 6, the MPG is amazing. Best car I have ever owned by a long way.

I don't own this car but I know that the rattle is on the standard exhaust NOT the M Performance exhaust. In fact the M performance exhaust is the fix as it doesn't have the switchable valve which is what causes the rattle, not the clamps. I like your videos but you've got to do your research as these basic mistakes are what brings out the haters!

The great thing about the M140i is the subtlety. Understated. Not shouty. If you want that, buy a Civic or a Focus.

1. I don’t think they’re that sketchy. You just can’t drive it as tho it’s 4wd. 2 you can get it coded it only costs £100. 3 I didn’t have any rattle issues with the mpe but is a known fault. 4 black it all out and it makes it a little more appealing but it’s a wolf in sheep’s coding. 5 it’s what you pay for so you can’t really expect great MPG. Will have another as there’s nothing that compares for the money

Can't bring myself to give a like to your video. I enjoyed the video don't get me wrong and I'm no fan of the stripes personally. But I can't push you to take them off by liking the video. It's your car to do as you please to it. If you like the stripes you keep them mate!

I like the 15 second elevated rev startup from cold, reminds me of my Audi TT only it last more like 20-30 seconds on facelift petrol TT TFSI.

Iv got the facelift M135i and my Dad has the M140i and I have to say the M135i sounds much more raw and throaty whereas the M140i is a little more grown up.

Try a cold start on a m2 my neighbours hate me and I don’t have any rattles when mine starts up.

I’m buzzing that these damn stripes are coming off - a shame that 1000 likes from randoms around the world has to convince you that it’s a disgusting mod 🤢

I'm driving a M140i myself and have 2 remarks: 1) It's not twitchy at all. I'm sorry, but if the M140i is twitchy, you've never driven a twitchy car! 2) Fuel economy is awesome: It all depends on the driving, but for a 3L R6 engine with this much power, the fuel economy is best in class.

Personally a fan of the stripes, I was going to like the video but in this case I won’t simply because I think you should keep them if you like them! They add that bit of difference imo

fuel economy is only a problem if you make it one, like you i drive mine how it should be..... which gives me an average of about 20 mpg :') i prefer smiles per gallon personally....

I have one of these and you make me laugh about mpg. In 2008 I had a vauxhall omega 2.5 v6. I used to average 11mpg on that with f@#k all bhp. This m140i mpg to power is amazing. I had a 2009 s3 and drove to le mans in 2010, averaged 24mpg. Just think a little

Luke, I’ve been a follower for a while now and as usual liked your video - but please ditch the vinyl on the sides and the lights. Rattle is on the standard valve exhaust, a combination of replacement back-box, software update or M-Performance exhaust has been the official fixes. 1 series had its first LCI in 2016 with the launch of the M140i and the second LCI in 2018 with the Shadow Editions, OPF and radiator rock guards (June 2018) on the M140i

Then you can piss people off that think its just a normal, basic & boring 1 series! Did you say you get 32mpg...? I struggle to get 21mpg with my 4cyl turbo with almost a 100 horse less than yours...

TBF your comment about rear wheel drive applies to all rwd performance cars. They are not point and shoot cars, but ultimately they are the best otherwise F1 would be 4WD. Also any car you drive hard will drink petrol. Yes?

Driving it on sport plus is the only way! Car was so well balanced on the limit I actually miss it, I liked it more than my M4 comp if truth be told

32 mpg or 7.4L/100km is great for a 3.0 I6 T, my E82 120d is currently at 8.2L/100km, but I guess I'm only doing short runs and literally no highway driving

32 mpg is epic, I barely get that from my 1.6 turbo Vauxhall!

Look, I've get it the sponsors are important, but just in my concern it took too long so i recomand anyone else skipping the beginning of the video.

How does the LSD play with the traction control which has been carefully calibrated to an open differential? Is there any remapping involved? I imagine that much of the TC programming is there solely to negate and optimise the open differentials response to any adverse condition with mind blowing algorithms calibrated to the tiniest units of time, speed, loading etc etc. There could be potential for a dangerous conflict with both the TC and LSD overlapping in their function. There's potential for them to compliment each other too. I would like to do this upgrade if there are no doubts about it's safety/feasibility.. Decided to get an M140i in the near future... Thanks for your input when deciding between the GT86 and M140i in previous comments.

Which car with that kind of performance has better fuel economy and is not a diesel? I am always impressed by the economy of the M140, especially compared to the 2l Turbos i drove before.

BMW’s VANOS is great, if you are calm with the car it will get great mileage for a turbo 3L... but we obviously don’t want to drive them calm much lol

Funny you should complain about the fuel consumption when almost every other review I have seen says that it’s very good on fuel. I’m currently driving a 2008 civic type r and with solid motorway driving at 65mph I can hit 44mph but mix that with some town driving and some vtec I’ll be averaging 30mpg if I’m lucky. Now I’m led to believe that the m135i and m140i could give me the same if not better fuel consumption whilst offering and extra 100bhp and 200ftlb.

Love the car, waiting for more videos on it. Surely if you need apple car play that bad you would of bought 1 with pro nav, can't be a bad reason not to buy a 140, you chose poverty spec 😂 I think you should of had pro nav fitted before some of the other mods if it's that big a deal for you. I waited a month to find the perfect 140 for me with all the extras I wanted like adaptive, harman kardon, pro nav etc. Next mod for you - pro nav/ install with apple car play!

Have to agree the interior feels dated (I've come from a mk7. 5 gti) plenty of clicky buttons not as much space for bits n bobs and the plastic feels cheap, I drive is decent tho.

CarPlay is crap compared to the iDrive 6 UI. The good thing about it is you can install Apple apps. The bad is that it's not as polished as iDrive and you'll want to go back to using iDrive anyway

Keep the stripes, it makes mine look so much better. Mine needs a limited slip diff, desperately, think I'm going for a wavetrac ! Interior is great but all the trim rattles p1ss me off, and my old E91 touring was a lot quieter. I had the cold start deleted when I had it remapped, not needed, and just annoying leaving for work at silly o'clock in the morning. Prefer the standard look, and mines not a shadow, as everyone tries to be 'different' de-chroming and now it's common ! I do like the side skirts on yours though, and it's one of the things I'd consider, even though I'm more a fan of the sleeper look. I'm averaging 28.2 mpg LOL, maybe it's not just you 'youngsters' that put your foot down (I'm 50) :-)) Good video sir, thumbs up !

Actually, i think 32mpg is pretty good for the performance you get. At the moment i own a e90 325i with "only" 270hp and its only doing 25mpg.....

I know some people upgrade the with android auto, this requires a replacement aftermarket screen.

Okay bud, the car looks killa. But i just want to make a few points here if i can, i agree with you on the RWD aspect but I wouldn’t to go as to say its ‘scary’ without the Lsd, the cars plenty controllable without one.

Luke - buy a "Pro Screen" and have carplay and enhanced bluetooth coded... easy fix and it'll get rid of that rubbish small screen

BMW straight 6 engines are incredible on fuel for what they are, I have the N52 so the last N/A one with about 272hp and it comfortably does 40-45mpg on the motorway The fact that these turbo B58’s can do the same and in some cases even better even though they have nearly 100hp more is mind blowing to me Still only 21 so not quite ready to upgrade yet😂

Get CarPlay added in. It’s not that difficult. Personally I preferred the BMW interior to that of the Golf with a much nicer driving position. I felt like I could get much lower. Maybe I’m a grumpy old bugger but I like those aged buttons; I’d rather those than touchscreens.

Get the Navigation Professional retrofitted and do a video on it - many only have Navigation Business/NBT EVO/Entrynav and a video of the process would be good.

I can't imagine driving a car without CarPlay.

What's the general opinion on the red leather option in a BMW m sport. ? I'm on the fence about getting one with the red interior.
