I just want to take the time to say how much I appreciate this. As an African American raised in Europe you never get to see your own culture represented in anything! What most African Americans, don't realize, is that there are so many of us living in Europe, especially in UK, Netherlands, France, and Spain who are not military affiliated. We are never represented in anything! Like most African Americans living abroad, you speak the local language fluently, so people just assume you're an African immigrant who's lived there a long time. The minute they hear you speak English with your family, they all of a sudden want to relate to you by suddenly becoming "urban" and say stuff like."my nigga". So strange, but anyways like 2 years ago, Alcorn's Golden Girls had a clip that went viral, and the anger white people had that black people had their own universities was astonishing. So many people would ask, " why do they have their own university.....segregation is over......white's should be allowed to attend...etc". Then you have to explain the whole history of HBCUs. Then they get it, but it's exhausting to ALWAYS have to explain and define being African American. By marching in this parade, you don't know how much of a seed you planted. Now people will begin to ask questions. WHy is the entire band black? What is a hampton University? ? African American's attend college? There are black colleges? What's an HBCU? Here's living proof that it exists! I felt especially proud because my parents now live in the Virginia, about 15 mins from HU. I was SOOOOOO happy to hear the accent.
