Dude! I think this literally gave me the motivation to get my general license, mainly due to the cost! Seriously! Built in antenna tuner is a steal for me!

After hours of viewing and reading available reviews and information. I concluded it was a no brainer.. I often go portable, via camping trips. And this is compact enough to take to work when I am offshore working .. It won't pull the guts out of a 10 amp power supply and I am sure it will work fine with my Wind camp multi- band wire dipole. Especially out on the open seas. Marine mobile.. So I pulled the trigger today.. $480 bucks delivered. C.O.D. And no import tax.. The only negative .. The matching amplifier is way more expensive than the rig ?? I enjoy a bit of semi QRP. But for anyone wanting 100w out the back of the radio. Pay the extra and get a Yaesu FT 857D..Thanks for the upload.. 73s HS0ZOU. Subbed ..

Thanks for these awesome videos... 25 years ago was the last time i used Ham Radio that’s bc i lived in Outback Australia... the was no cell phone service or Sat Phones and the only contact with authorities and the Royal flying Doctor was via HF Radio. HF has saved 1000’s of lives in Australia over the years and is still used a lot today even with the availability of satellite phones. I am now living in the USA your videos have definitely got me hooked again.

I have to agree with you on this as I have sold the house and now moved into a apt. The xiegu90 gives me the freedom to move outside or run a mag loop from the balcony with a little more watts then my ft817. I simply love this want to be flex radio lol; sorry hi hi. It is the perfect radio for me to get into the digital age from my old ideas and boat anchors. How about having a full blown shootout on the rcvr's between the G90, the ubitx & the 7300; to seewhat radios can pick out the weakest signals to be useable! Ssb, ft8 & cw (incl cw decoders on 7300 & g90!) All 3 hooked up to same antenna - obviously with tx inhibited! No mics or keys... Probably also a good time for a mfj 1708b sdr switch. Excellent review. Been an A licence Ham operator in the UK since the early 80's but, other than listening around the bands not been active in the hobby for years, seeing this SDR radio is going to change that i think :). It's features and a price which i can justify spending for what will be occasionally used kit make it a no brainer really. My present rig is a Yaesu FT 102 that i have had since the 80's and is in full working order; i only ever use it on RX as i daren't load it up into the random wire i have at present. A TX'r i can just turn on and use straight off is handier than having to plate and load the 102. I'm in the process of constructing an EFHW with 64:1 unun for 80m. up so, will have the antenna for the job and, will have it to load the 102 into and blow the cobwebs off that :) I have subscribed to your channel and joined on Discord as i really rate your videos and general information so, thank's.

I am working on getting my General Class. I have been into CB since 1990's. I am on a really tight budget. The fact that this does all of HF except 6m and has a built in tuner made it a no brainer for me. 20 watts is plenty I can build or purchase an amplifier when I need one. I was thinking about getting a lower priced HF or HF+6 mobile radio to use. None of them had the combination of power and features at even close this price point. I will build a G5RV or long wire.

@10:40 you’re listing the 3 kinds of people this radio may appeal to. I suggest a 4th kind... someone who lacks the discipline to say No to cool QRP radios! I absolutely don’t need yet another QRP rig but, at this price point, it’s got some very compelling features. I bought one online tonight. I've got one and it does not have the QRP feel. I have checked into the YL net on both the 7300 and G90 barefoot and they both perform well. The 7300 hears way better but at my location means my noise floor is that much higher. However, I have not seen an instance (yet) where the 7300 and G90 have not got equal reports from the reporters. Odd with 20W vs 100W. At 5W SSB, I do not think this would be possible.
@cliffbatson
@cliffbatson 5 жыл бұрын
@@don_n5skt Hey, Don. I know what you mean about the G90 not having a QRP feel. It's HEAVY for its size. It's longer in depth than I'd prefer. It's not "trail friendly" in that the knobs are not located on top of the radio - and they don't provide a way to prop it up for table-top use... hard to get a good angle to see the display. All of that said, I really like this thing! It's so cool to have a compact radio with a panadapter. I never take my KX3/PX3 combo into the field but, after using a Flex Radio at home for years, I have become spoiled to have a panadapter when possible. The G90 isn't the radio I'd take with me on a hike or when I'm trying to put together a lightweight, compact station but for portable ops where I don't have to carry it uphill (or far). But, I'm a fan. There are a few quirks I think they'll iron out in future firmware updates (not remembering your bandwidth settings from session to session, etc.). I believe this one is a keeper! - Cliff

@don_n5skt 5 жыл бұрын
@@cliffbatson Yes, I am trying to get it on Wspr for antenna testing during the day. I trust leaving it on. My main goal was to get a low power station for Wspr and some FT8. I will probably bring on POTA activations as well but I have an FT-891 and so I am torn. The G90 has the waterfall built in and is easier to use in some respects than the 891.

Great Review 👍 I really like the G90 qrp with waterfall. Sure you must have a lightweight lithium ext battery but Hey you get a waterfall !! I like this but I also like the ultra portability of the x5105. I need both. The G90 for running around on my 4 wheeler at camp. And the X5105 for backpacking. I can leave my icom 7300 hooked up at home. Plus it has it fantastic internal auto tuner. How this one Is better than the Icom705 is that the Xiegu G90 and the Xiegu X5105 have an internal antenna tuner and the icom 705 does not. plus the fact that if you really need it you can crank the Xiegu G90 up to 20 W in an emergency if you need it but the icom 705 is stuck down at 5 watts. However if you want to stay in the 5 watt qrp range saving battery the Xiegu g90 can do it. 😁

I came from Ft857d originally and always wanted to mess with QRP and the FT-817 this is way better than a 817 for a features list.. Great for beginners, beginners starting on FT817 were always disappointed being limited to 5 watt QRP. 20 watts can do allot. Heck 12 watts on a SSB CB can do allot.. I think they have the perfect starter radio here. HF mild but decent wattage and a live waterfall.. all in a small portable package.. The way they could improve this and make it really flippen desirable by all HAM's, incorporate digital into one USB connection to a PC... 20 watts for digital modes is Flippen perfect! I'd buy that just for digital stuff.

I pair up my G90 with a hardened power systems revolt G2 battery for a great portable solution which will run for hours before recharge. Include a small laptop, folding solar panel, EF dipole and you have a pretty good field combo that does not weigh you down. I hope ICOM, Yeasu and others are paying attention. This product hits right on a market niche. Improvements in the future would be on board USB sound card, a little weatherproofing, a bigger display and up the watts to about 50. That would be a do it all machine. It would be like my IC 7300, only smaller and more portable.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse I don't think it would be too much a stretch to "amp up" some improvements to a G90 like machine. A blend of both capabilities of a G90 and a FT 891 would be killer.

Thanks for the review, really encouraging! In a very sincere spirit of helping, the pronunciation for Xiegu is quite far from that though. Putting 协谷 in Google Translate will allow it read it aloud to you; very roughly it's more like 'see-yeah goo', with almost a hiss to start, and a hard g for the gu. On the air it could get pretty confusing when there are many different approaches to pronouncing the manufacturer name!

But what can you hear ? . I just bought a Tecsun PL-660 to go on a cruise. All the main SW stations have closed and even AM in Italy and Croatia have gone on line. From my home in England I only get China and Bulgaria on SW. I can just tell my phone ,' Play WNYC' !

The G90 is an amateur band radio. So it works in the amateur frequency spaces. With the PL-660 you can operate in SSB and get some of what is going on in those band too. The G90 is a transceiver of course.

When I get my ticket in tech and gen I want to make contacts in HF and in cw for a good price starting out as I get a analog tm2a1 radio and play with both I'd run in a vehicle, in my home and portable for battery power and a altoids tin hf radio without breaking the bank. Me I just want something cheap, quick, minimalist and ready to go and not care without being complicated to just get outside and use the radio.

I really like your videos on KZfaq. I recently bought the Xiegu G90 with the data expansion port. I am wondering about the pieces for the digital. I found a Sabrent USB to microphone and speaker. But I cannot seem to find the 3.5mm stereo male plug to twin 3.5mm stereo male plugs cable. Did you make this cable yourself or did you buy it from somewhere ?

Technically, you are correct, but the jack puts out earphone level power. There isn’t enough power for an un-amplified speaker. I tried the resistor mod, but must have done it wrong because it didn’t work.

maybe because they do not want the end user to have access to possibly hacking the radio to operate in bands not legal for hams to use on the easy.. Maybe they are trying to make good with the US market and lock up firmware and eliminate the easy button to change settings that would render the radios "illegal" in the eyes of the US FCC
