For 3 decades starting in 1979 I spent a LOT of time on the "rock. In the 80s there was actually a couple "trees" between the two national forest signs. They were really more like wind blown shrubs. I had a lot of meals and played a lot of pool in the Salty Crab.

What a trip. That shot of the sub was awesome. I'm still amazed there is a bar on the island. K6ARK "Mr Safety Officer". LOL.

Thank you for posting this video! It was great to see the "rock" again. I was stationed there from about 1979 to 1982 as an electronics technician working on the radar at the airfield. This video is so cool! Thank you everyone! (Oh, by the way, the fish with the teeth was a sheepshead.)

Awesome video! I was stationed at North Island in the 90s and spent a few weeks on San Clemente. It was great to see how some things changed and how others are still as I remember.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse No, San Clemente on the main land not San Clemente Island. Never got to step on the island itself. I remember, on real clear days, being able to just make out San Clemente Island and Catalina from the beach bluffs. On a boat trip out to Catalina once we were going to investigate San Clemente Island but the unwelcoming Navy ships made us decide to turn back towards Catalina. 73

How cool! I am studying for my Tech right now and bought a Yaesu FTM500D yesterday! It’s only VHF/UHF but I’m just listening anyways. I’ll get my Tech and an HF capable radio, really excited!

Looks like an epic trip. My cousin is a contractor there for the water supply which is barged in. He is flown in there for several days at a time. My kid also went through some training there. I heard lobster underwater is off the hook!

I heard you guys on FT8 during day. Problem was, the wind was whipping your antennas around and you'd be up at +2, then down to -21 then gone! I eventually did work them on 6m about a week ago. RFI you say? Noooo! Not near that Radar! I think your joshing us on that one. Haha. Seems like there are many more power poles than when I was there in the early 80s while I was in the Navy. Had to go there to fix a plane to get it back on the boat. The wind turbines are certainly new. And great! Less fuel needed to be shipped out there. Come to think it, not sure why there's not more solar panels. Btw Josh, you'd had a shorter drive to Point Magu then a shorter flight to San Clemente. Come to think of it, I'm surprised you all were LAX and not San Diego just because of the affiliation to the Naval Air Station at N. Island. - I had lots of fun there too back in the day. Btw, too bad the Mrs. didn't meet you on Coronado, you could a had yourselves a great away time at the Hotel Del. Great place! Ive never heard a bad word about it yet! 73 glad you had a great outing on FD! 😃

Was glad to work you guys on Field Day. I too need to get my CW on the air. I have been calling cq late at night and struggling through QSOs, so I just need to keep practicing my head copy and getting on the air.

Yes, we did have two visitors who got on the air. You’ll see at least one in the video. Also, Josh invited three more visitors after one recognized him in the Salty Crab, bar and restaurant. I think we had five visitors plus two folks who just came to grab stuff out of the building. Definitively high traffic location. LOL!
