To those who are wondering; Those tiny white insects are springtails. They are harmless to pets but they are very beneficial to plants and soil. They break down materials and recycle them. Some of them do eat young roots though.

Very interesting how despite being in such a natural set up he’s still very trusting of you. You would think he would almost go wild, but he still has the temperament of your average pet hamster. However you can still see his wild instincts kick in when he’s digging and foraging for food.

B!TCH you DO realize omnivores eat seeds too right??? Omnivores will eat literally everything that is *edible*. Squirrels are omnivores and eat a lot of seeds and do fine. We are omnivores. Of course hamsters need a varied diet, do you think the youtubers that know how to take care of hamsters don't? Jesus you are so brainwashed.
@AnonningAnon
@AnonningAnon Жыл бұрын
@@Mellanii.always No, it is not. Fruits, sprouts, plants, mealworms, etc, are good for them; not seeds. This is the same mistake some parrot/bird owners make in mass (literal animal abuse). DON'T FEED ANIMALS SEEDS. Seeds aren't even good for humans! There's a reason things made out of seeds make us sick; they are filled with toxins and phytic acid, which binds with essential nutrients (making it so that a diet of only seeds or too much seeds leads to malnutrition, since it deprives the body of the nutrients it should have gotten)!

meat?? what hamster in the wild is eating meat lmfao they’re smaller than the palm of your hand so what would they hunt?.. They’re omnivores meaning they need protein so Insects yes, meat no.

I would think that any hamster if well habituated and certain it is safe would actually thrive in this set up because it definitely would feel more natural and therefore be less stressed then also being more likely to relax with the human. If it felt threatened in this environment it would likely go feral but none of those seem to be the case here.

@@DigitalDuelist yeah. I've had chinchillas too. And they weren't sociable at all. I had Teddy Bear hamsters growing up, and they were always very finicky. They'd be nice and all of sudden bite or nip. Winter White hamsters are great. We allowed our pain to have one litter of babies and the mother was great with them. Both of ours (Male and Female) lived almost 4 years which is long for a hamster. When I had Teddy Bear hamsters they only lived for 2 to 2 1/2 years at most.

I see nothing but benefits in keeping dwarf hamster species in this manner, but because it is a closed system as with any natural biotope it does have to have some maintenance requiring some knowledge, research and experience. So while this is most likely the best way to keep a dwarf species of hamster especially in reducing its overall anxiety and therefore increase its friendliness with humans, this kind of setup cannot simply be set up and left alone requiring some intervention and observation that of which you are quite good at executing as evidenced by how healthy Cotton is. I wouldn't recommend this for the beginner but certainly for anyone willing to put in the time and effort to learn as well as perform the necessary maintenance. That said I think this is one of the best examples of how to properly keep a critter healthy and happy in captivity. Cotton must be the happiest hamster on KZfaq in this incredibly well done and maintained setup. I love the fact that you added a pond as I've always thought that for a hamster a water bowl or bottle to be unnatural and potentially less sanitary than this setup. Water treatment plants used all the techniques that you used to create a safe drinking supply. I kept waiting to see if Cotton would actually go in the water and was disappointed but not surprised that they didn't. Anyway bravo!!! You get my standing ovation and my subscription now and thanks to the KZfaq algorithm for bringing me here! Even though I'm completely in love with hamsters and in particular several of the dwarf species, I have avoided keeping them and in particular dwarf hamsters after a few poor experiences in a sterile more typical setup but plan on trying it again in this one thanks to your success. i think i'd even go so far as to add a few fish to the pond! I'd love to see an attempt at keeping a colony of the more social species of dwarf hamsters and I can't remember its name I'd have to look it up again because in a more sterile artificial environment you still witness some of the fighting and cannibalism that you wouldn't necessarily see in the wild even in that species. It requires a large naturalistic enclosure to be successful especially when they're not siblings.... also I'd love to see long-term statistics concerning the longevity of these critters living in this setup and I guarantee that it would be longer than both the regular more traditional sterile captive setups and certainly longer than in the actual wild. And one last thing I was curious if you ever tried keeping isopods in there as well and excuse my laziness for not looking this up myself but wondered if they were safe for the hamster to eat or if they would even eat them. I asked this question cause I think they'd be great in breaking down hamster waste. Also some of them are pretty cool looking. I love the fact that critter keeping is moving toward more bio active setups. Once these systems are well matured and maintained especially during the initial stages, in almost every case you have healthier happier and longer lived critters as well as less maintenance overall... Because nature and the hamster takes care of a large part of it just as they should. Anyway again BRAVO!!! Please give Cotton a little pets for me.

This is truly my dream paludarium 😭 A bioactive setup home to a hamster with naturally growing plants, a variety of hardscape, and a planted aquarium stocked with fish?? Amazing 😭💕 But I wonder, how does the hamster deal with the humidity? I thought they need dry climates? I would love to recreate this in my home one day. Your video updates always bring joy 🥰
@simplygrace8393
@simplygrace8393 Жыл бұрын
Please don’t, it’s not good as like you said it shouldn’t be humid and moist. The hamster may get to cold and die or suffer, just use normal bedding (which they can burrow in just fine as long as it’s deep) and make a big inclosure. This person is not an expert, and it’s kinda sad that so many people are praising them for putting there hamster in a cold moist inclosure, also they may get soaked going into the aquarium which can damage their coat.

@@simplygrace8393 Winter white hamsters are native to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Siberia. I don't the hamster will die of cold. Soils also naturally retain moisture; do you think the hamster is burrowing in aspen fiber in the wild? I think it is best to ask the hamster if they are healthy, and he seems to be active, alert, and calm.
@snekysneks
@snekysneks Жыл бұрын
Hamsters burrow, so they are exposed to humidity in the wild, since soils naturally retain moisture. In fact, hamsters are nocturnal so they would be spending their days underground to avoid predators. That's a lot of time in humid environments. Winter whites are more active in the day than most species, but the point still stands.

@@snekysneks yes, but i doubt that the cage stays without the lid. The hamster would escape in a heartbeat. Also, some hamsters live in the desert.

@@snekysneks @Jessica U will always find people like him complaining like they are hamster whisperer or something. The fact that the hamster is active and alive after 1 year just prove them wrong.. if the situation is not good for them they certainly will not survive 1 year in that environment.
