How does Islam address big questions in philosophy of religion? How does Islam approach the Problem of Evil, arguments for the existence of God, mystical experiences and the relationship between the creator and the created?
Hamza Yusuf Hanson is the president of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California, the first accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. In this interview with host Robert Lawrence Kuhn, he discusses God, existence, and spirituality from the Islamic perspective.
The Global Philosophy of Religion Project aims to make the philosophy of religion a truly global field by promoting the scholarly work of researchers from underrepresented regions and religious traditions. It is led by Professor Yujin Nagasawa and hosted by the University of Birmingham.

This project was made possible in part through the support of a grant from the John Templeton Foundation. The opinions expressed in this video are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the John Templeton Foundation.

Learnt so much about Islam from this gentleman today. All my respect and gratitude to this great religion. Also realized many similarities between vedas and Quran about existence, consciousness, God without attribute and God with attribute .. World needs more scholars like him to teach us about the correct interpretations of these old scriptures.. see religion is not but it’s the people with blind faith and who were brain washed bring bad names to the religion .. Interested to learn more about Quran after hearing this gentleman, thank you

Mr. Kuhn ends his interviews usually with a two-liner which dismisses the episode as being amiss of key questions unanswered or still in doubt. To me after seeing such repeated dismissals I gave up on Mr. Kuhn’s sincerity in his quest for truth. In all his previous episodes he did not interview muslims and if Islam did arise in any episode it was with a dismissive tone almost always. And so I’m rathar speechless of what I saw of my favorite scholar and so dear to my heart br Sheikh Hamza Yusuf answer Mr. Kuhn so easily and unperturbed. As a Roman Catholic, I enjoyed this discussion. My view is that if we all acknowledge and adhere to the guidance of the Holy Books then we can't go far wrong - except through our sinful human nature if we allow that to guide us. As a Roman Catholic, I have always held a certain respect for Islam and The Qur'an and think Roman Catholicism is the closest of all the various Christian denominations to Islam. Before he mentioned it I could already tell that Hamza Yusuf was an ex-Catholic by his attitude and demeanour.

Yes. There are many similarities between Roman Catholic and Orthodox (Sunni) Islam. Even in the mind-body it's quite difficult at least for me to differentiate concursus dei and kasb. But in the ontology cmiiw mainstream Catholicism more close to perennial philosopher's works (e.g Avicenna and Averroes) via Thomas Aquinas than occasionalism (e.g Al-Ghazali) via Nicolas Malebranche.

@@ministryofarguments3525 universe being eternal is an empirical and mathematical absurdity and contradiction to reality. Unless you can prove it that isn't the case, what even makes you think that you are not the one who is delusional as your theory seems to contradict objective reality? Any ideology that contradicts reality is false. And yours is such. And you seem to distort the meaning of belief : an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof. So your notion that a belief ought to be demonstrated is merely your subjective assertion which is baseless.

@Bibibibi Pipipi I follow Judaism, which is the oldest of the G-D based faiths. Where we encounter fellow Jews who have strayed from the path, we try to engage them so that they come back to the fold and show them how G-D can be a part of their lives. You don't need to condemn all non believers out of hand or send them to hell. Many professed atheists have come back to G-D as a result of having Near Death Experiences or other spiritual encounters. This is what G-D is looking for in the end. Did you try to encourage such people to re-engage with their faith?

@@AntonySachin "It has no connection with an arabic culture". Just to be very simple and concise. Who is the father of western thought? Socrates whom we know from the great Plato, and his student Plato, and his student Aristotle. Aristotle, literally called The Philosopher was known through Ibn Rushd (Averroes) that he was named by the westerners who read Aristotle through him as "The Commentator" Did you know the only single work of Plato known to the west was the first part of Timaeus? So how did the other texts reach the west? Literally by Plethon taking them from Constantinople. Algebra is الجبر which literally comes from Khawarizmi's name of his book Algebra الجبر Chemistry is a renaissance era change of the word Alchemy which is from the root الكيمياء or Alchemy or The Chemistry. The element system literally comes from Jabir ibn Hayyan. The Book of Optics literally comes from Ibn al-Haytham. "In the book, he presented a study of the phenomenon of the camera obscura (his thousand-year-old version of the pinhole camera) and delved further into the way the eye itself works. Using dissections and the knowledge of previous scholars, he was able to begin to explain how light enters the eye. He asserted that the light ray is focused, but the actual explanation of how light projected to the back of the eye had to wait until 1604. His Treatise on Light explained the camera obscura, hundreds of years before the modern development of photography" Who literally outlined natural selecrion and darwinism a thousand years before darwin? Al-Jahiz! Who formulated the scientific method? Jabir ibn-Hayyan (Geber) I mean I don't even have to go deep, rhis is all elementary basic knowledge. Their own numbers are "arabic numerals" and Fibonacci found them in algeria and spread them through europe lol. Shaikh Hamza cited some verses from the Holy Quran nicely and precisely. Reading the Quran and think and ponder with a present mind will deepen the understanding of the presence of God. It is the only revelation where Allah speak directly to mankind and uses deferent forms of speech dialogue, story, challenge , history & past theology.

“The baseline is 5 times a day. Many people do more than that”.. Very true. I think an average muslims pray 5-8 times per day. I pray 10-11 times per day. And I’m an ER doctor, but I still find time to perform more prayers whenever I could. Alhamdulillah all praise be unto God for giving me more opportunities for me to worship Him.
