In this video, I review the LK Chen White Arc Jian and the LK Chen Royal Arsenal Han Dao. These two swords also provide an excellent opportunity to analyze the historical context of how and why the Western Han dynasty chose to adopt the single-edged dao over the double-edged jian which impacted Chinese swords through the rest of history.

I really like the Gladius short length because it can be used even when pressed up against an opponent. In the press of a battle, a shorter sword can have advantages.

Yes, that is a definite advantage of shorter blades!

the hatchet tip of the second sword was found on various historical swords and knives due to it's simplicity

Good to see you back. I was wondering if bigger shields correlated to shorter swords. Good to see it confirmed. 英雄所见略同 😄 Regarding the ring pommel I wonder if it is also just a cheaper and lighter way of creating a pommel. Kudos for testing the stab 😬

The ring pommel is definitely a cheap way to make a pommel. Though I think it has a variety of other potential uses that make it very practical and utilitarian.

the blade on the first sword closely resembles that of some renaissance European swords

Always like your videos. Have you played around with other ways of wearing the lanyard? This ain’t historical afaik, but I tie a lanyard to my han dao so I can have the strap cross over the tiger mouth. It’s not as secure if I somehow drop the sword completely, but I just feel it’s more of a seatbelt for my hand when I thrust. Incidentally, it is also easier to slip on and off my hand than wearing a lanyard around my wrist.

I haven't tried that but that is a great idea! I will try it out next time I do some cutting. As for what is historical, when it comes to things like the Han dynasty, we really have no solid evidence for any particular method of using a lanyard. So your method is as valid as any other unless new evidence arises.

In regards to your hand sliding onto the blade of the Han dao during thrusts against hard objects, could you stick your pinky and/or ring finger through the ring pommel and allow that to anchor your hand against sliding during thrusts? I believe another KZfaqr mentioned it as a viable option to prevent sliding in case you don't have a lanyard to tie around your hand.

I didn't mention it in this video, but holding the ring itself is usually not very comfortable and in the case of thrusting like this. I would be weary of it breaking the finger or loosening the grip on the weapon in general.
