What: Small town, art capital of Kauai
Where: Southwest Kauai, between Koloa and Waimea
Located on the south shore west of Koloa, Hanapepe Town once flourished as one of Kauai's largest communities. From World War I to the early 1950s, West Side Hanapepe was also one of Kauai's busiest towns, alive with G.I.s and sailors who were stationed there for training.
Today, “Kauai’s biggest little town” hasn’t changed much over the last century at first look. Its historic buildings are so authentic that the town was used as a location for films like “The Thornbirds” and “Flight of the Intruder,” and even served as the model for the Disney film “Lilo and Stitch.” But now those plantation-style buildings are home to charming shops, local eateries and more art galleries than any other spot on Kauai.
Hanapepe Town hosts a farmer’s market on Thursdays starting at 3 p.m. And it celebrates its artists every Friday from 5-9 p.m., as painters, sculptors and craftsmen open the doors of their galleries and studios to celebrate the arts. Visit the galleries, take a walk on the “Hanapepe Swinging Bridge” - which is always an adventure to cross - then shop and dine in one of Kauai’s most famous small towns.
The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge is one of Hanapepe’s most popular attractions. The bridge was originally built in the early 1900’s as way for residents to cross the river. After Hurricane Iniki, it was restored and reinforced, but has since become worn and in need of some repair. Children love this suspension bridge because it rocks and swings and can be a little scary at times. This bridge is the real deal though, and is a much better thrill than those found on the playground.
While in Hanapepe Town visit the unique galleries and shops, or enjoy the festive Art Walk on Friday evenings, where all the galleries are open to view the works of local Kauai Artist.
One note, currently the bridge takes you to the west side of the riverbank where Hanapepe Valley residents live. It is recommended out of respect for these residents that once you reach the other side, to turn back to Hanapepe.
