If you want to hand catch your drone PLEASE don't make this mistake I made when I first started flying drones. It caused me to have a pretty significant injury. And no the injury itself is not on tape I wasn't filming at the time.

Two days ago, due to my drone reporting the home site was 'unstable' due to wind, I hand landed it successfully. I then hand launched and my second hand landing attempt resulted in the drone pitching sideways. I'm not sure why, but I've been watching every video I can about this since. Several sharp cuts to my fingers and lower arm and my drone hit the ground (although it has tested as operational). I've seen a comment recommending to first hover the drone slightly above head height and at nearly arms length as the hold position (with the drone's rear facing towards you and your back to the wind). The problem is that things can happen very quickly even if you are taking as much care as possible.

I'm sorry that happened. It's hard to say exactly what happened. Was the drone filming at the time? I think if you are forced to hand catch it is extremely important to be on the correct side of the wind in relation to the drone. If the wind takes it, it tilts the drone away from you rather than toward you. It was a hard lesson for me....and bloody.

Interesting. I like you technique on how you get your hand under there without triggering the sensor causing the drone to go up. I prefer extending my arm out and having the drone come down on my hand, but as you said that's a personal choice. I will try your technique so I have another option. Your technique would be better in windy conditions.

This advice is the exact opposite of what most experienced drone pilots recommend. The wind should be to your back. The fatal flaw in his argument is that he is not thinking about a big gust coming at you will not just cause the drone to tilt into the wind, but in the process it will be temporarily pushed back by the wind before it compensates. That means it can be pushed back into his face before it recovers.

I appreciate your input but respectfully disagree as it applies to the A2 for 2 reasons. If you are directly behind the drone you don't have the depth perception you do when viewing the drone from the side. The 2nd reason has synergy with the first in that you can't tell where you are placing your hand in relation to the downwards sensors located on the bottom of the A2. We'll just have to disagree....btw, your argument implies a big gust of wind coming in the opposite direction which can happen no matter where you place the drone in relation to your face.

I didn't have any issues with the Air 2, but that's not the case with my Air 2s. That one keeps going up and down, even when I hold my hand flat. I've seen people do it on youtube so maybe I just need more practice. But it's a little spooky.

What’s wrong with landing it on a certified landing pad?
@californiahikebike
@californiahikebike 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing at all but that depends on the situation. Maybe there is no area or no flat surface to place it. Or maybe on a long hike you just don't want to carry it. Just depends on the situation. In most cases, I would agree that you do NOT have to hand launch or catch. But then there are exceptions...

IMHO, not recommended. 1) The sensors will try to move the drone away from you if directly under it, 2) Difficulty with depth perception, 3) Wind can be a hazard if windy.

@luismartinez-my1nk I disagree. There are safe ways to do it and I have been safely hand catching my drones for years as recent as yesterday. There are terrains that do not allow take off or land that are pertinent to hand catching.
