Very, very interesting! My Granda (born 1896) was a trained engraver (in Ireland). His son, my father, picked up on writing in "Copper Plate" script and produced absolutely gorgeous, everyday letters - because, at that time, there was no other common way to communicate with others. Two of my brothers work in the jewellery business, with one being an ace at polishing and the other being a genius at engraving. I've tried it. What no-one tells you is just how fucking hard it is! All I ever tried my hand at (at my brother's instruction) was engraving copper, silver and gold. Those are very soft metals, so how folks could show such perfection on much harder metals like steel will remain an eternal mystery for me. As a memento, I have a 24-carat gold medallion produced by my brothers for our eldest sister, Leaoghn, (born 1946) for her 50th birthday and hand-engraved by my dear brother. She died of breast cancer in the year 2000 and on the reverse of the medallion, that very same brother sadly engraved both her date of birth and her date of death. I wear that medallion every day around my neck in her memory. That may sound mawkish, admittedly, but so what? MsG

Very beautiful. I want mine and my wife’s wedding bands hand engraved in this style. I had my previous wedding bands from my first marriage hand engraved like this in Bucharest Romania by a very old engraver who also did my parent’s bands in the 70’s. But I live Upstate New York now and I doubt I could find anyone who can do anything beyond electro pencil. Such a dying art form. I appreciate the video. Thank you for taking the time out to make it and upload it

EVERYBODY I HAVE AN ANSWER maybe someone has already put this but, the tool he is using is called a burin. Its used to do engraving in soft metals like copper, silver, zinc... It is very small, as you can see. His fingers are huge compared to it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burin_(engraving)

Thank you so much for this video. Every other video I've been able to find, require a hammer and chisel method; or use a Gravermax machine which costs over $1200 , not an option . Peter Cook, would you please tell us what you are using to hold your metal piece? It looks like an angled turntable of somekind . The work clamps which stonesetters use , are the only ones I've seen used in videos thus far, and they cost $600. I have designed a bronze plaque with acid etching and a scribe , but irhe design turned out not to be done deep enough as the weather has already made it hard to see, in just a few months. I am hoping to make it deeper with a graver , by hand. Finger's crossed. I plan to practise on something else for a while as I'd hate to ruin the piece, which is a memorial plaque ,and very important to me. I know you posted this video a few years ago, but I'm hoping you still check the comments. :-)

It is hoped you did not attemot to do it yourself without expertise needed to engrave. For a non-acquainted learner, getting to stage to produce decent quality work would take at minimum 1-2 years to become competent -if seriously keen and practising learning each day.-

@vincentement "Art" is a broad term in English, and often applies to much more than just painting or sculpting. The same applies to "Artistry". There's a lot of overlap between "arts" and "crafts", not everything has to be classed as one or the other.
