In this video I take a close look at the Trend Air Shield Pro, a battery powered air respirator. I have a look what comes in the box and try it out in a variety of woodworking contexts. I hope you enjoy the video and let me know what you think in the comments.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

If they weren't so expensive, I would have purchased one myself. But from the mixed reviews across the board and the high price, I decided to build my own. I use it every day now. I love it and it cost just $150 to build.

Another first class video production but more importantly a down to earth one. I thought at first when I saw the fogged up visor it was going to be a rejection but no, it did clear itself. Loved the fact that you were wearing a Mirka dust free sanding t shirt whilst using the Festool sander! It always pains me when I see tradesmen (and amateurs) cutting stone etc and not wearing dust masks. Occassionally I go up and put my two penneth in. Have we learned nothing from the miners I'll say, try going round one of the pit villages and see the old men wheeling round oxygen bottles because they didn't have breathing protection. I wear the Trend dust mask along with safety glasses and hearing protection as well as using dust extraction equipment - you are quite right, you only get one pair of lungs so look after them.

Thanks John for your very kind comments here and yes I couldn’t agree more about what you said about the miners. I grew up in Wigan and coal mining literally killed off generations of men far too early because what they were exposed to.

Thanks Leo for another interesting video 😊 I agree with you completely regarding PPE, you should protect yourself to your comfort level (and possibly beyond). I think I'll be saving for quite a while to get one of these but it does seem to have many advantages over the Trend stealth one I have at present. Thanks again.

I am woodturning with 1 hand, actually Penturning. But I do it on a Proxxon, so it's not a big, heavy strong machine (100W) ;-), but I love it. Cutting custom blanks with a miter handsaw, and with the surpluses I make a keychain. So for me personally this shield would be overkill, but if I had a workshop like you, I wouldn't think twice and get a shield like yours. Good choice mate :)

Good review. To throw in my sixpennyworth ... I have the mk1 helmet and would always recommend fitting a visor overlay - a scratched visor is just a pain and if severely scratched should be replaced as impact resistance may be much lower than designed to be. I get 4-5 hours out of a fully charged battery and the fan speed gradually drops as it discharges - not to silly levels but enough to feel airflow not being quite as good as it was. At that point I need a quick replacement battery, not a massive wait to charge it, so I'd always recommend a second battery and charger dock for quick swap over. You can wear standard ear defenders if they have a thin head band (obviously wear the band under the helmet not over it!) but the fitted ones are more comfortable. For the record, I wear specs and with goggles, ear defenders and a face mask I would sweat like a sweaty thing, this visor is a godsend in this respect.

Fair review Leo, having owned one there not bad. My biggest complaint was the weight is all on your head and shoulders plus the price of a second battery but all manufacturers do that. One point that you made we all only get one set of lungs is very true. Cheers Geoff

@@Hand-i-Craft Yes I upgraded to the 3m Versaflow, which means the battery and filter are both around your waist/lower back and the helmet has very little weight to it. Again it's a big out-lay, but I think my lungs are happy lol. Cheers Geoff

@@luvwudI had the same issues as you I just found the Airshield pro just too heavy and it realy started to hurt my neck when looking down at my work. Mine also vibrated a lot and was realy loud, it litterly rattled my scull. I upgraded to a JSP Jetstream powered respirator with the motor and filter attached around the waist, it was soo much better.

At around £350 is it worth it, yes because it protects your lungs, no because it is a complete and utter rip-off ... not only that but it's not even their own design, have a look at the GENTEX PUREFLO PURELITE PAPR ... look familiar! Anyway, thanks for the review and I agree that protecting your lungs is a good thing to do ... I didn't and now have emphysema (MDF dust, plaster, spray paint etc)!! I'm in the midst of making my own BLTN-PAPR (Better Late Than Never PAPR) which uses P3R filters (£2 each), probably a 12v 7530 fan (around £10), builders helmet (£16), thick polycarbonate visor which is far superior (£20), ear defenders if I want (round £25), runs on 8xAA batteries (around £13 + £4 for holder, like the MIRA MB-90) ... well under £100 for the same/better protection and longer run time. So filters around £4 a pair (Trend £20-£40), extra battery (AAs) around £13 a set (Trend around £40) and last longer, air flow of 339 l/m (Trend 200 l/m) ... so cheaper (and probably better) for around 1/4 of the price. I'm not against manufactures making a profit, but this is just a pure and utter rip-off ... mind you, not as bad as the Trend Air Pro max around the £700 mark!!

I have the Axminster ( made by JSP) which is very comfy and doesn't fog up. The filters are a cartridge type, not sure about the comparative effectiveness compared to the Trend. The only problem I have had with the JSP is that when the ear muffs are worn they touch against the back of the visor and quite a bit of noise from the fan is conducted to your ears. I have a pair of fitted electronic noise suppressors from my shooting days and these are much better and block the noise well so maybe an in ear type would be a better idea than the recommended ear muffs. Does this happen with the Trend Leo?

Hey, Leo. One thing you didn’t cover is how noisy is it? Like, if someone comes up to speak to you, would you need to turn it off to hear them? If so, is it easy to turn on/off?
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft Жыл бұрын
Good point Denis and something I’ll cover in a follow up sometime. Obviously ear protection needs to be removed, the optional ear attachments twist upwards easily enough. I’d say most folk would be able to hear someone with it still switched on as it isn’t that loud. I struggle with my hearing so a bit more difficult for me. It’s very easy to switch on / off, just a button at the back in the centre 👍👍

I've had one of these for several years. It is unsurpassed if you wear glasses because the glasses don't fog up. However, I do find that my neck is a bit sore if I use it for several hours while looking down at my work. I'm 6'3" so that is most of the time. So, I tend not to wear it for more than 2 or 3 hours each day. I don't think it's the battery that is the issue; the helmet itself is just heavy (or maybe I just have a weak neck; I'm 76 years old).

I don’t normally watch any videos that cover tools or other things as I want to form my own opinion, but I watched yours till the end and enjoyed I, that is very unusable to me. As you said the opinions were yours and no one else has the right to tell you what you can or cannot wear.
