I will be talking about where your hands should be and which hand you should use when pole bending and barrel racing.
Often times, I see young and inexperienced riders with no conscious way of holding the reins when running poles and barrels. What I talk about in this video will help your run and improve your horsemanship.

Thank you! Very informative video. Do you have more videos on barrels/poles?

The real fun begins when you're running a horse in split reins and have to make sure you don't let the reins get to loose. I'm so used to just using this one set of split reins, I often forget to switch them out. On the plus side, having split reins means I have a way better rope to lead around with when I'm not running. I've never had a problem using them for barrels and poles, and the horse I use them on outperforms the other horse I have that always uses barrel reins.

I agree with this but I believe you should rely more on leg not just snatching your horse around:)

I seem to be one of the only ones where I ride that has never felt the need to hold their saddle horn on turns or anything and I'm always two handed. I'm assuming that's good? Lol

Whitney Jones I was taught to never grab it.. Like if you can keep a seat why grab it.. I see no need for a horn

It is not for balance. When you go 2 handed you get in the horses way.

It’s good always going 2 hand until your horse freaks out and you lose a rein, then it’s not that good

the purpose of grabbing a saddle horn isn't at all for balance, when you turn you use your horn and push against it to keep your butt all the way in the saddle so that your horse knows to rate and turn, but if you can keep your butt in the saddle without coming up all the way around the barrel two handed then that's great, just be sure that you don't get in the horse way with your hands :)
