I kinda hoped they would clarify an often overlooked part of death saving throws. According to PHB, you roll at the START of your turn, so if you roll that sweet natural 20, you can still take your turn! Spend your action to chug that emergency healing potion in your pocket, and see if you can move away.

they did say that you roll at the start of your turn, but I understand the desire for that extra clarification. Often times people are so excited they rolled a nat 20 on a death save, they just forget to take an action... and from a roleplay perspective, it might make sense to have come out of unconsciousness and not realise you CAN do something still in the next few seconds...

warfilgames Yep, that's a must-have in the toolbox for sure plus it actually heals HP unlike StD which only stabilizes. However, at low levels when spell slots are hard to come by and resources limited, a clutch "Spare the Dying" cantrip can be the difference between continuing to adventure and re-rolling a new character.

A Healer's Kit is 5gp for 10 uses of stabilisation, basically replacing the need for Spare the Dying once you have sufficient gold. Even at level 1, your background usually gives starting gold, so at least one person in the party should buy a healer's Kit or two so that they can stabilise others.

Jorden Taylor common misconception. the above mentioned Animate Dead is the one that makes an undead creature. Raise Dead is a 2nd "bring a character back from the dead" spell in the game after Revivify. Also, only Clerics (and maybe Paladins?) can cast it.

Domaik If that’s the case, isn’t that something better handled by the DM at the table? The whole point of this series was to give some basic tips so you can begin playing without feeling overwhelmed. The more complicated stuff and further questions of “Wait, what happens now?” will come organically as you play. :)

Zachary Gallagher The point of this video series is to be viewed in conjunction with the Player's Handbook. As Marisha explained on Twitter. It's not a comprehensive guide for newbies or a replacement for the actual source material. It's quite literally a 'Handbooker Helper'. Besides the chances are pretty slim that people who don't watch CR or play D&D will watch these. And anyone who does watch CR should have picked up on quite a bit of the rules and procedures by now.

I wish you covered how death saves work when enemies attack you while unconscious, aka the only confusing part about death saves
@Wildtrexkid
@Wildtrexkid 5 жыл бұрын
if you are unconscious you have that 'Condition' which means you - cannot move or speak - become 'Incapacitated' so you cannot take any actions or reactions - drop prone and anything you have held (actually protects you somewhat from ranged attacks as they are at disadvantage at any range further then 5 ft so only a normal roll) - attacks against you are at advantage (cancels out if ranged) - auto crit if ANY attack hits from an attacker within 5 ft of you (so a successful arrow shot will still auto crit if they manage to hit from next to you) critical hits count as 2 failed saves, regular hits count as 1 failed save so if say an enemy orc knocks you out with an axe, rendered you unconscious and you failed the save on your turn you would have only 2 death saves remaining, if he attacks you and succeeds the swing, it will auto crit and you will lose 2 more saves and die. best way i can quickly thinnk of to simplify it is it after seeing if you have suffered instant death based on hp numbers, they don't matter any more. you are now using a secondary 'health bar' of saves and fails. all damage totals don't matter and are instead reduced to what type of damage it was, whether it was a hit, or a critical hit.

Feels like instead of explaining the spells to come back. A section on what happens when your down and take damage was needed , how if you don't die outright you go to 0 with most effects ending, and a section on any magic heals not only auto gets you up but you get the full effects of the magical healing. Coming into 5e for the 1st time a lot of people get those three confused as it's very different from 3.5.

@kachiechan 5 жыл бұрын
@@shadycactus6146 Caduceus did not turn him into mush. He used a spell called Gentle Repose which only purpose is to extend the shelf life of Raise Dead, which he will get at Level 9. With that action, Taliesin was telling the audience he fully intends to resurrect Mollymauk as soon as Clay is 9th level. It's the precise reason he made a grave cleric.

i will double check in a second, but i am like 95% sure he cast decompose, not gentle repose. he said something like "i made the earth remember him, there'll be something here" - pretty sure he was intending to make molly tea lol. plus raise dead only works w/in 10 days so even with gentle repose it would be too long unless cad were to come back every 10 days and re-cast it, which he definitely hasn't

I know you guys filmed a bunch of these all at once so any feedback we give can't actually be implemented until the next set of episodes are filmed, but I'm going to state again the same thing I've said in another video. This show has a TON of promise and isn't a bad show by any definition, but you're falling into a really common trap that most new trainers fall into: You're forgetting the people you're training/teaching could possibly have 0 knowledge of the medium and you're forgetting to mention things that even casual players learn pretty quickly, but brand new players would be completely unaware of. For example, as has been pointed out, your explanation of insta-death due to damage was poorly worded to make it sound like if a single hit takes you to your negative current HP, you die. That would mean a cleric with 1 HP could be insta-killed by an attack that does 2 HP of damage. The actual rule is a single attack that takes you to your negative Maximum HP, which is significantly harder to happen. Another example is you didn't explain what happens when you drop unconscious again in the same battle or in another battle before you get a short rest. This is extremely common for low level parties, so mentioning that getting healed or stabilizing resets your death saves would make sense, or even just saying every time you start rolling death saves again after not having to roll them is a brand new set of 3 saves vs 3 losses. Another thing you missed is death saves happen at the beginning of your turn, not the end, so in the case that you roll a nat 20, not only do you get 1 HP and are conscious, but you get to take your turn that round, something a lot of players (And DMs) are not aware of but makes a HUGE difference in the game. As someone who's designed numerous training plans for everything from teaching a new DM to teaching the entire staff of a multi-million dollar store a brand new service, I can speak from experience when I say your own knowledge of the subject can hurt your potential trainees. It's extremely hard to do, but in a situation like this where your target audience is brand new players, you have to get into the mindset of someone who knows absolutely nothing about the subject. My training tip for that is "Begin at the Beginning" and it means just that. Start at the extreme beginning. If I'm training someone on how to use a computer, I don't start with how to use the mouse and keyboard. I start with how to turn on the computer. Again, most people do that without thinking because they are familiar with computers, but for someone with literally zero knowledge of computers (and they do exist, trust me on this....) you really do have to tell them where the power button is, how to make sure it's plugged in, that the master power switch on the power supply is in the "on" position. Without that very basic information, the rest of the info you're giving is a complete waste of time. Again, I really like the idea behind this and think, with your reach, your knowledge of the game, and the tools you have that most youtubers don't have, you guys can make a HUGE impact on the D&D community (and Tabletop RPG community as a whole), but you've got to step out of your own heads and approach every subject from a completely new players perspective. That's a lot easier said than done, but until you do you're going to confuse people more than educate, and that can turn people off more quickly than anything else.

Raise dead is also 5th level and works the same as Reincarnate exept it has the tradeoff of costing 500gp less in exchange for needing the original body. To recap: Reincarnate: costs diamonds worth 1000gp, can only bring back those killed within 10 days, you only need a part of a body and the spell creates a new body. Raise Dead: costs diamonds worth 500gp, still can only bring back those killed within the past 10 days, but you need the original body (with vital organs attached! You can't bring someone back who is missing a head lol!) Both can be used as 5th level spells, but the situations surrounding the PC's death (and your party's current funds) might play into which spell you ultimately use

You may want to re-release this with a clarification. You do NOT die instantly if you take damage equal to twice your current HP like was suggested in this video, you die if the damage exceeding 0 is equal to or higher than your MAX HP. The example in the PHB is a cleric with 12 max hp and currently at half health dies instantly at 18 damage but is unconscious at 17 damage.

The example given in the video was clear. If you're at max hp and take double your max, you're instantly dead. She explained that if the leftover damage is equal to or greater than your max, you die, then used an example where you had max and got hit for double your max.

Hello thanks for explaining death saving throws. As a new DM am still learning so i do have a questions i hope you can help explain. My party was in combat and one reached 0hp so he started his death saving throw. The rest of the party managed to kill the monster and now they were out of combat. what happens to the fallen party member that was on his second try for death saving throw ? Does he regain back to 1hp automatically? Or does he still continue with his remaining death saving thrown? Thank you in advance.
@M4rkerMaker
@M4rkerMaker 5 жыл бұрын
I may not be one of the fine folks of CR but I am a fellow DM who may be able to help. In the scenario you describe, the rules state that the player who's still unconscious would have to keep making death saving throws if they're not yet stable. But they'll be fine so long as their companions can heal them while unconscious, either through magic or pouring a healing potion (or something similar) into their mouth. Once healed they'll pop back up and their death saves will reset. Of course, if no healing means are available to the party then yeah they would continue to make death saving throws until they either stabilize or die. Those are the official rules anyway and this episode already talked about some of this so sorry if I overly repeated anything. But, as a DM you can make table rules that suit your parties needs as you see fit. For example, you could make a table rule for players at 0 hit points popping back up with 1 hit point automatically after combat is over. Hope this helps and good gaming ^_^

Should also mention that anytime you take damage while unconscious you fail a death saving throw. That plus a lot of attacks being automatic critical hits on prone targets is a nasty combination.

these are very helpful one of my main questions is how does the dynamics of swapping weapons during combat work? from a bow to a sword --- or sword to bow etc
@aetherblackbolt1301
@aetherblackbolt1301 5 жыл бұрын
Debbie Buckland don't know if you're still wondering, but it's fairly simple albeit cumbersome to do so. Each turn you can do one free interaction without using action/movement/bonus action etc. An example of an "interaction" is drawing or sheathing a weapon, but both both. If you want to do a second interaction, you must use your action to do the Use an Object action. So if you wanted to swap weapons, it would take your interaction and action. This is fairly annoying, so it's better to predict a swap early; at the end of one turn, sheathe your weapon as an interaction. On your next turn, use your interaction to draw the new weapon. This way you still have your action to attack with the new weapon. It's just not quite as dynamic without the scene telling your character they'll need to change weapons soon. However, you can circumvent this somewhat by dropping your current weapon; dropping a weapon doesn't cost anything, not even an interaction, so you can still use your interaction to draw your new weapon. At the end of your next turn, you'll want to use your interaction to pickup your new weapon, and then the turn after sheathe it. In this way you still have your full actions to do stuff, but it takes longer to perform the whole interaction.

so i have a ranger with 30 HP he takes 40 hp of damage.. what do i write down -10 or just zero. if i then take another 35 hp of damage on the next turn am i now dead-dead or still at zero and rolling. if I am at negative 10 and my healer heals me for 8 am i at negative 2 am i now at 0 or am i at 8HP

This was pretty short so it would make sense for it to be a bit more comprehensive. The rules for taking damage whilst unconscious (and what constitutes 1 or 2 deaths saves in those situations) would've been an easy addition. That said, still great content and covers the basics pretty well. I do think if I showed someone this who didn't know the game that well they would still ask "what happens to that extra damage below 0 though". Yes that was explained in the thing but for someone who doesn't know how any of it works, it could still come up as a point of confusion. Incidentally that information could've easily been rolled into an explanation on taking damage after you go unconscious, now that I think about it. Ahh well.

Ugh I'm still confused lol so if my total hp is 45 but I've been hurt in battle and now at 17 hp. If I get hit by another move that's say 30 damage did I die or am I rolling death saving throws. Also if I get hit by a attack for 46 damage at 17 hp did I die then?
@vandaal9937
@vandaal9937 6 ай бұрын
No, in both situations you would roll death saves. If your were at 17 hp you would only instantly die if you were to get hit with an attack that does 17+your max hp which is 62

I just finished a 5 hours session where our party of three (at level 2) versed 15 goblins, 4 hob goblins, and 1 wizard. The half-elven druid and I (half-orc fighter) had the same initiative and when there was 1 Hobgoblin, 3 goblins and the wizard remaining we were surrounded and our rouge was no where to be seen. The druid went down first and had 1 success one failed death saving throw, and then I failed a throw. Our rouge then went into the thick of it and was dropped to 2 hit points, after being on full health the whole fight (he is very squishy). The druid and I decided to take our next saving throws together so at the same time we rolled... AND WE BOTH GOT NATURAL ONES!!!!!

What kind of game are you playing? The 4 hobgolins alone vs 3 lvl 2 players is a deadly encounter according to kobold fight club. 15 goblins and a wizard aswell? How the hell did your DM play that out without you realising he was holding your hand the entire way? "You see 15 goblins coming at you but they are all tied together with a huge rubberband making it impossible for 14 goblins to attack. In the middle of the pile you notice a wizard hat and you see that the wizard is actually driving the goblins. The wizard is packed so tightly that he can't use his arms to cast spells. Oh yeah and on the ground is four hobgoblins that looks dead but they each have a sword on their bodies so they count aswell"

Could anyone confirm the rules about death saving throws outside combat. Do you still have to make them? And what are the possible consequences if your party can't get to you to heal you. For example if they are restrained or if your character falls into a trap.

the Dm I see they still have to roll death saving throws if fight knocked them down and fight ended but if they pass all three saving throw or if a player does a medince check to stablize the player then that character should be fine.
