It says so right in the PHB, apparently nobody has read it. I don’t think I’ve seen a single artistic representation of a Dragonborn PC without a tail.

The Dragonborn race has the cool factor in terms of aesthetics, lore and roleplay potential. However, their racial traits are somewhat lacking. Consider asking your Dungeon Master if you can have one of the following upgrades: (asking for all of them in tandem might be a bit much.) * Breath Weapon is a bonus action. * May use Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Constitution Modifier before each rest. * Add one damage die to the Breath Weapon. * Breath Weapon area is determined on use between the 30 foot line or the 15 foot cone. The Dragon Hide Feat on page 74 of Xanathar's Guide to Everything has some nice perks that probably should have been made part of the baseline traits for Dragonborn. * +1 to Strength, Constitution or Charisma * AC = 13 + Dexterity Modifier * Retractable claws that do 1d4 + Strength Modifier slashing damage.

I love them, but they do suffer power-wise compared to a lot of other races. These suggestions definitely look a lot like I wish they were written. Also: if I'm descended from creatures with truesight, why can't I even see in the dang dark, PHB?

It doesn't matter how but if a PC is decended from a dragon their will be discord and despair. Think about it. Tiberius? You can't mention him on the crit roll subreddit without being auto removed. Gern? Robbed resulting in Vex's alignment shift. May have also been eaten by fire Giants Arkhan? first and as of yet only PC too straight up betray the party Cali? You all remember bowl gate Spurt? first guest character too die on screen and brutally at that

Also noteworthy...from what I understand, Dragonborne are not bound to the same Alignment as their Draconic Ancestor...meaning you can have some Good Chomatic and some Evil Metalic Dragonborne.

Pretty sure Gern Blanston wasn't Evil - just very, very odd. Same with the various chromatic shopkeepers we've seen on CR - as shopkeepers, Lawful Neutral is a good guess for alignment.

One of my first characters was a LE silver dragonborn who was an ex-member of the Cult of the Dragon. She had to leave because of a difference of opinion with her boss. Her goal was to become a better person (retribution ark) because she didn't want her soul to get tortured by Tiamat when she died. Let's just say it didn't go very well. Her selfish streak kept getting in the way and then she got eaten by an ooze. Not the way I had hoped she would go but hey ho now she's being tortured in the Abyss. On the plus side my new character, a lizardfolk cleric has a piece of her skin and plans to make a lining for her shield. I wanted a token to remember my old character by lol.

A small piece of advice- the breath weapon attack on the Dragonborn is very weak, especially at higher levels. Most of the time, by third level, it is far too weak in comparison to class features, and considering how it is one of two considerable features for our scaly friends, have the DM look into giving it a slight buff. Making it a Recharge 6 ability, where the player who uses the breath weapon rolls a d6 at the end of their turn and gets a use of the breath weapon back if they roll a 6. This prevents both abuse and too much power.

I mean, It already recharges on a Short or Long rest, but yeah, I agree it's not all that strong. I wish the Area of Effect got bigger at higher levels, along with Damage. TBH, I'd love a total rework of Dragonborn to give them... more identity. Darkvision, Claws, stronger Breath Weapon. that'd be dope.

That still makes it really lame because it is an action to use and by fifth level your usually doing more damage with weapon attacks or cantrips than your breath weapon. But then again most racial attack features (e.g. bite/claw) are only useful in desperate situations when you don't have your equipment, so it is the same with the breath weapon but its a shame Dragonborn don't get any other features that are actually useful. IMO make the breath weapon a bonus action but keep the number of uses restriction. Or discuss with your DM about letting your dragonborn have natural armor of 13+dex due to their scales like draconic sorcerers and lizardfolk get.

I ruled the Breath differently, as a levelbased ability. On 3rd level, it can be recharged on a 6 at the start of your turn. On 6th level, it needs a bonus action only. On 8th level, you can counterattack with it as your reaction. Thats how far i got, still need more testing, maybe add an dice as well on 8th level to buff the damage a bit since at that point,anything else is stronger already.

@@BassGosple NO DARKVISION. Too many races have it as is. If you don't have it, and want it, there are work around. But I fear by the time 6th Edition Roles around the only race without darkvision will be humans, and I have my doubts that they won't. It's gotten out of hand. If they want all of these races to have some form of night vision bring back low light vision for certain races so it doesn't feel like ALL of them are night owls. Also, why in Baator do cats not have Darkvision?! Of all the creatures that shouldn't but do, why does the one creature that absolutely SHOULD have darkvision not have it? Makes no sense.

Both my dragonborns have tails also. It's a rare trait of their particular familial bloodline. There are four siblings only about a few months apart from each other. All are silver dragon descendant who follow the teachings of Bahamut to various degrees.

I have both kinds in my campaign: the tailless are the pure blood dragonborn. The tailed dragonborn however are part lizard folk.

For those who don't know, there was a D&D chart of what species could interbreed with what.....Dragons were compatible with EVERYTHING. Also as a level 14 Sorcerer with the Draconic Bloodline Trait, you DO get dragon wings! Let your mighty wings cause you to soar naturally whilst the party is stuck on the ground HAHA!!!

I DM dragonborns without tails, but I have allowed a player use Dragonborn stats with a half-dragon character, and half-dragons do have tails

I assumed they did because I find a bit silly if they don't, mentioned it off handly to my DM once, and just like that changed the entire lore of his world. He's pretty cool though and completely ran with it. My dragonborn's main personal quest is to grow his wings as others in his clan have. I don't think all dragonborns necessarily have wings in this world, but it's how I envisage my character and my DM loves that.

In my world they're dragon*born* so are technically half-dragons from the mm, but i use the same stats in the phb. The secrets to making dragonborn divinely or magically were lost to ages past, after dragons took dominion over the material plane.

My first character was a blue Dragonborn monk. The first thing I did when I saw the race description in the 5E Guide was note that they don’t have tails. So I *of course* gave my Dragonborn a tail, but I also worked it into his backstory of being abandoned at the monastery due to this “birth defect”. The DM would sometimes have NPCs comment on it and if we trying to be incognito, he’d try hiding it under his robes (already being conspicuous enough just being a Dragonborn). He sometimes uses it for slap attacks just to mix things up, and I also headcanon it as being part of his high Acrobatics skill (better balance and all that). The reason he has a tail in-universe is that (unbeknownst to him but knownst to me) one of his grandparents was a half dragon.

Like there's a world where someone will make a dragonborn without wings and/or tail. It's sort of like how tieflings come in literally every color in practice, no matter what the handbook says.

my current character is an (ice) dragonborn bard/barbarian, and she is so much fun to play. The two things I really wish were different is that I wish dragonborn had a higher natural AC (they're covered in scales for crying out loud), and that you got more uses of the breath weapon as you level up. It getting more powerful is all well and good, but it'd be nice to be able to use it two or three times before having to wait for a long rest to use it again

At the very least use a bonus action for your breath weapon even if it is once per rest. Maybe adding a racial feat to add a recharge mechanic on a d6 or maybe a higher die. Nothing to absurd of course.

I have some good news for you! Your breath weapon recharges on a short rest! So as long as you're taking a couple breaks in between, you can do it two or three times a day no problem.

Something you'll be glad to hear then is that Dragonborn breath weapons are usable once per SHORT or long rest. Obviously, this doesn't make much difference if your group doesn't stop for them, but a useful distinction should you take a rest for your party warlock to regain their spells, or your monk to regain their Ki points.

Agreed the lack of natural armor for Dragonborns is ridiculous, both Draconic sorcerers and lizardfolk get natural armor from their scales why not dragonborns???? Also making the breath weapon a bonus action would actually make it worth using, because as is you're almost always better off making a weapon attack or a spell or even a cantrip than using your breath weapon in combat. I almost think all the racial attacks were deliberately designed to not actually be useful in combat unless you're unable to use anything else. You'll probably get more use of your breath weapon outside of combat for melting locks (acid), starting fires (fire), or preventing floods/downing by freezing water (cold).

I would make an argument to expand the possible ancestries to the Gem Dragons. Crystal, Sapphire, Emerald, etc. Throw in damage types like Radiant, Thunder, what have you for those who want an even more unique (and less lackluster) race feat.

If you want to play a paladin, just go halfelf. They have better stats for you; Dragonborn resistances and breath weapon are very situational and pale in comparison to what halfelves have to offer. If you want to go optimal, take 1 to 3 levels in hexblade warlock, and of course, elven accuracy. This is undoubtly one of the best feats there are out there and increases your chance to get a critical hit and, well, make you hit every time if you can get a stable advantage (consider mounted combatant or darkness)

My first ever character for D&D was a Silver Dragonborn Paladin named Alduin Frostscale. I forget the name of the campaign we started off in, but it involved cults and Tiamat.. anyways the party was pushed back into the greenest castle, and the cults champion challenged the party to a 1v1 fight, me being the Dragonborn Paladin had the best chance at surviving it, so I/Alduin was voted to be the fighter. It was a back and forth battle, exchanging blows but due to my AC, ability to heal, and a weapon that dealt a small amount of bonus damage to dragon type enemies I ended up defeating him in battle and decapitated the cults champion who was also a Dragonborn although just a fighter. The party cheered and congratulated Alduin, and bestowed him with the nickname of "Scales" and the DM was surprised as he had tried to make the 1v1 fight impossible to win, and he misjudged how bulky and strong my PC was.

To hell with the no tail or wings bit... its your world and they can have them if you want them to. Though, non flight capable wings would be way better for balance. At least at lower levels. And tails can get their owner into some funny situations, just look at what Barf's tail got up to in Spaceballs.

The problem with Dragonborn is they’re demonstrably weaker than the other core races. Their breath weapon per short rest is a joke, from level 5 onward most classes will be better served attacking with a weapon or casting a spell than using their breath. Additionally, the DC will be lower than a spell, due to scaling off of constitution. Their only “always on” benefit is an energy resistance, but plenty of races have those along with extra traits beyond just resisting one type of energy. In my games, I increased the breath from d6s to d8s, as well as made it recharge from 5-6, and gave Dragonborn 60 foot darkvision. I also made their racial ASI +2 to Strength, +1 to Constitution and Charisma. This made them feel quite a lot better, and my players actually used their breath weapons usefully.

I love dragonborns but do find that their breath weapon is a bit wimpy. With the last dragonborn character I made I replaced the breath weapon with the Dragon fear feat from Xanathars guide. It's fun scaring people lol.

No they shouldn't. Not every race should have darkvision. Too many people use it as a crutch.

Lucas Akame It’s less that more races is need it, and more that Dragons themselves have not only Darkvision, but Blindsight as well, so a Dragonborn having no better senses than a human seems ridiculous.

I've always viewed them as the descends of half-dragons. Similarly to how tieflings are born from the bloodlines of half-fiends. Basically if you are a dragonborn one of your grandparents could a dragon.

I had a black dragon born cleric named Alzar and some friends and I did a little one shot to introduce them to the game. We died fighting three stirges in the first 10 minutes of playing.

I play a lot of Dragonborn in my years of D&D, one of my favorite races in D&D history. But with all the comments here and I especially agree with Dragonborn being buffed to stand toe to toe with the other races, like the addition of a +1 CON, 60ft Darkvision (maybe seeing in magical darkness too, but that's stretching it), Breath weapon buffed to 3d6 at first level and used as a bonus action to an equivalent of their CON modifier (minimum of once), the Dragon Hide Feat for free, with the traditional racial resistances (All belong to their respective homebrew commenters, which I agree with).

Things I'd really like to see on handbooker helper: How to build a Gish How to build a dual arcane/divine spellcaster. How to build/play a tank rather than a big damage warrior. How to play archers or ranged spellcasters having a fight with medium to long range abilities instead of fighting within 60 feet.

I newest character I’ve made is a Dragonborn and I broke rules cuz I wanted wings. She doesn’t fly due to a fear of heights. She is a cleric because of backstory stuff. And gets easily attached to people. If everyone in the party she is best friends with a halfing bard who gets to ride on her shoulders and play their lute to make extra coin. Sorry I don’t got a lot of dnd friends so I like talking about my character.

Hey man, listen to that last little anecdote. Play D&D how you see fit and how the DM allows, not everything has to be governed by the book. Race - Class dependencies are pretty scarce; if it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid.

In the world I'm creating, Dragonborn are extremely similar to Warhammer Fantasy Lizardmen. They have tails, the language is only spoken (and very difficult to speak if not some race of lizard), and the breath weapon is slightly more powerful and recharges every 1d6-1 rounds

I preferred 4th edition Dragonborn in that their scale color and breath weapon didn't need to match, to further separate them from half-dragons.

the thing that cofuseses me is that they dont have night-vision. dragons are essentially magical lizards, and last time i chicked lizards can se in the dark. i know that can be fixed with homebrew, but still.

Wait what? Dragonborn don’t have tails? I guess you’re right, they don’t in the PBG, but I’ve always pictured them having tails, and most artwork I’ve found online has them.

I heard that Dragonborn were once slaves of dragons on a paralell planet to our own and were transported here via rip in space, that is why they are so rare and just kinda popped into history. That's why they officially hate all dragons, even Bahamuth. The individual could know that that's stupid but will never speak about it to other Dragonborn
