Interesting to see the "anachronic" option fort the scenary: a german and roman story displaced into the context of the wars between the French Revolution and the Ancien Régime, the Monarchies of Europe. The soldiers of the French Republic represent vulgarity, corruption (they stole the works of art) and terrorism and Arminius , as a symbol of personal power, seems to be more ethical! Important to remember that Handel wrote his opera sixty years before the revolutionary epoch: it creates a superposition of temporalities almost illegitimate. Marvellous Lauren Snouffer and Cencic, with so many Lamenti in the purest baroque line...

What a wonderful cast of singers, and a Handel work I was not familiar with. But where was this performed? The city, theater and orchestra deserves some recognition!

Pregevole signore, scusate, mi permetto umilmente di affermare ciò che segue: l opera barocca Arminio di georg Friedrich haendel è paragonabile all opera Rodelinda dello stesso haendel. Per diversi motivi. Saluti.

Arminio è un’opera strepitosa se paragonato con tutto ciò che è stato composto a partire da Mozart fino ad oggi. Fare paragoni con Ariodante è come stare a decidere se è meglio il Paradiso o il Purgatorio di Dante.

Ecco comunque il giudizio espresso dal noto musicologo e compositore Paul Henry Lang nella sua magnifica biografia (Milano, Rusconi, 1985, pag. 283): "Il nuovo anno (1737) iniziava e Händel giudicò giunto il momento di lanciare nell'arena le due nuove opere: Arminio fu presentato il 12 gennaio e Giustino il 16 febbraio; furono un fallimento. Arminio è il prodotto di un uomo distratto e sofferente, una delle partiture händeliane più deboli. Giustino è forse musicalmente migliore, ma il libretto è talmente pasticciato che manca quasi di senso. La fatica di Händel si rivela nelle concessioni al vecchio stile operistico: il drago e altri aggeggi del genere fornirono materiale alle parodie. In queste due opere sono assenti perfino quel paio di arie o pezzi gradevoli che si trovano in genere anche nelle più misere delle composizioni händeliane; in entrambe resta solo l'impronta del compositore. L'assenza di personaggi umani verosimili è contraria allo stile di Händel; ci sono solo manichini, mancano azioni o conflitti, avvenimenti poco plausibili si susseguono l'uno all'altro come quadri, alcuni anche belli, ma di genere lirico e non drammatico"

i dont understand why these modern stagings always need to change everything. they turn a german pagan tribe vs roman battle which hardly any operas take place during into this french revolutionary period which hundreds of operas take place in. you cant even use the excuse that its been done the same way to death since handels arminio is rarely done. people haven't even seen it the way it was intented but they still feel the need to subvert it. too bad the much superior biber's arminio isn't ever performed.

You can't be serious😂 Baroque opera is literally defined by the castrato alto & soprano voices.

@@coreyhamilton53 Countertenors are not castrati, they don't sound like them whatsoever. Unlike countertenors, they made used a lot of chest voice. There's a reason why women voice young boys in animated shows. A man using falsetto would be laudable, that's why it's only used for humoristic purpose by real classical singers. 🤣 I'm truly thankful for french baroque opera, where they are not welcome.

@@athtarasterios9695 Cencic is performing the castrato alto part, which should be sung in a full chest voice. Head voice would be the castrato soprano part, of which Farinella and Senesino were famous for. If you want castrato soprano, listen to Scholl or Jaroussky.

@@coreyhamilton53 No a contertenor is not and never will be a good proxy for a castrati. Ever. Women in should sing these parts or male singers. Countertenors are a fad and a horrid travesti. There's nothing quite as revolting a manly character sang in falsetto. Just horrible and completely breaking verisimilitude.
